Sunny Beach is arguably one of the most renowned resorts in Bulgaria. You can journey here from Poland via numerous travel agency tours or independently, by flying into the Bourgas Airport and subsequently taking a cab or using city transportation.

I believe it’s worthwhile to visit this region of Bulgaria at least once, to relax on the beach, indulge in Sunny Beach’s vibrant nightlife, and explore the surrounding picturesque towns. Wondering what to see and which attractions to enjoy? You’ll find out everything in this post.

Sunny Beach’s Beaches

If you’ve selected Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach to soak up the sun on soft, white sand, you won’t be disappointed! The resort is renowned for its stunning, sandy, and impressively wide beaches. Trust me, this is not always a given in Bulgaria.

Here, you’ll be able to relax on three beaches: the southern, central, and northern beaches, which altogether form one continuous stretch of sand extending 8 km. Notably, it has been awarded the Blue Flag, an international symbol affirming the highest quality of bathing beaches and marinas.

This distinction ensures that the beach is clean and meets all standards. Both the sand and water have been rigorously tested to achieve and maintain this recognition. Thus, you can be assured that the area is safe, allowing you to unwind on the beach here without any concerns.

The cleanliness is sure to impress, as will the water temperature. From May to October, it averages 21 degrees, even rising to 26 degrees during the peak season! I highly recommend this destination to all who enjoy swimming in pleasant temperatures. An additional benefit is the gentle shore; in places, it is quite shallow, which is ideal for beachcombing with children.

Keep in mind that this is a resort; many tourists spend their holidays on Sunny Beach, and a promenade lined with numerous hotels, shops, restaurants, and bars runs along the beach. So, if you prefer tranquility, I suggest you go beachcombing in other nearby resorts such as Sveti Vlas or Nessebar, which I’ll describe later in the text.

Regardless, it is certainly worth visiting this magnificent beach on the Sunny Beach resort, one of the largest and most beautiful on the Black Sea coast, at least once.

What to Do in Sunny Beach

Sunny Beach is arguably the most entertaining locale in Bulgaria. Its vibrant nightlife, rife with numerous clubs, bars, and restaurants, has earned it comparisons to places like Ibiza and Las Vegas.

If you’re seeking historic monuments or landmarks to explore in the city, I must temper your expectations. Sunny Beach doesn’t boast a wealth of monuments. However, it does offer a plethora of entertainment options for you and your children. Here are some recreational attractions I’ve compiled for you:

Karting Track: If you’re traveling with children over 8 years old, you can enjoy go-kart racing on this 400-meter track. Situated along the Bourgas-Varna route, it promises great entertainment for the whole family.

Luna Park: If you’re part of a larger group, the local Luna Park is worth a visit. This conventional amusement park boasts a wide array of attractions, ranging from numerous carousels to a roller coaster.

Action Aquapark: A quintessential seaside attraction, this water park is located near the sea along the beach. It offers a staggering 30 attractions, including pools, paddling pools, and slides of varying intensity. Even if you spend the entire day here, you’re unlikely to run out of things to do.

Moreover, Sunny Beach provides numerous water sports, diving opportunities, and boat cruises. The city has an abundance of water- and sea-related entertainments, many of which are conveniently located by the beach. For land-based fun, you can also find places to play mini golf, paintball, or bowling.

Organized excursions are also available, often in the form of a cruise, combined with fishing or a gala dinner with champagne on a boat. Another popular way to spend your time is on a Jeep Safari trip, which guarantees spectacular views and an adrenaline rush.

What to Visit in the Area

Nessebar, often referred to as the Pearl of the Black Sea, the charming town of Nessebar is a must-visit when in the Sunny Beach area. Its historic old town draws in visitors with its unique architecture, filled with historical details and charming stalls. Here, you should explore attractions such as the Historic Mill, the Archaeological Museum, and ancient Orthodox churches. You can also enjoy a stroll along the beautifully situated seaside promenade. The town emanates a fascinating atmosphere, both within the labyrinth of its old town streets and along its scenic coastline I recommend visiting this town. For more insights, you can check out my post – ‘Nessebar – What to See in a Charming Bulgarian Town?

Sozopol, a picturesque port town, won me over with its captivating beauty. It’s worth visiting for its promenade alone, which offers stunning views of the town and coast. Being one of the oldest cities in Europe, Sozopol exudes a distinct atmosphere. I’d go as far as saying that one can almost feel the spirit of bygone times. A tour of the old town, numerous museums, and Orthodox churches is a must. The local architecture is sure to leave you mesmerized. Perfect for leisurely walks, Sozopol invites you to get lost in its maze of enchanting streets, leading you to the aforementioned promenade. While exploring the coast, I recommend taking a break at the numerous cafes or restaurants to savor the local cuisine. As for beachcombing, Sozopol will not disappoint. Here, you can relax on wide sandy beaches, partake in water sports, and bask in the sun from dawn till dusk. There you’ll find a unique museum located within a local Lidl supermarket! For more interesting facts about the city of Sozopol, I read more here.

Burgas: Home to the largest port in all of Bulgaria, the city of Burgas, like Sunny Beach, attracts many tourists during peak season. The city is notably situated between a bay and three lakes, adding to its allure. One of the most fascinating spots here is the natural spa — the pink lake. Located near salt pans where you can bathe and create mud masks for your face and body, it draws many visitors seeking natural beauty treatments during the season. For a leisurely stroll, I recommend the Sea Garden, the city’s primary attraction. This verdant haven offers numerous attractions, and interestingly, you’ll also find Polish influences here. Curious to know what they are? Feel free to read my entry, ‘Sightseeing Burgas – A Guide to the Most Beautiful Attractions’

A popular way to visit Sunny Beach is through organized tours by travel agencies. These offer a range of accommodation options, from expansive hotel complexes, some even featuring water parks, to smaller and more intimate establishments. The price typically includes meals, depending on the package you choose.

If you prefer planning the trip independently, you need not worry about lodging and dining. Sunny Beach provides a multitude of accommodation options, as well as a wide variety of dining establishments. You can enjoy regional delicacies, but the area also hosts eateries offering international cuisines, and numerous fast-food or barbecue restaurants.

You can secure your stay in a variety of hotels and private apartments. Rest assured, you will find a place that caters to all your needs. The selection here is quite vast.

Where to Eat in Sunny Beach?

I highly recommend La Flor Bar & Grill in Sunny Beach. They serve incredibly delicious food, and with locations also in Burgas, I can vouch for both. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of food is commendable. If you’re craving regional specialties, you won’t be disappointed. Likewise, they offer excellent pizza. Sunny Beach is also home to a diverse range of dining options, featuring cuisines from around the world, and an array of fast-food or grill-based restaurants.

Sunny Beach, being a quintessential tourist spot, is sure to delight some while potentially disappointing others. Primarily designed for leisure and beach activities, it nonetheless provides a variety of attractions and sights within its vicinity. I trust that I’ve managed to showcase these highlights effectively.

Personally, I’m more drawn to quieter, picturesque places on the Black Sea coast, such as Sozopol. However, I’d love to hear about your experiences with Sunny Beach. Feel free to share in the comments.”

Sozopol, a town located along the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, is a renowned vacation hotspot with numerous attractions for tourists. Why should one consider visiting Sozopol? The primary reason is the captivating beauty of this location!

Additionally, I will recommend places to see in Sozopol and where to enjoy a relaxing coffee break. You’ll discover the duration required to explore the primary attractions and get to savor the distinct tastes of this Bulgarian city.

What else does Sozopol offer? Let’s kick off with the fact that it is a scenic port town, also celebrated for its Old Town and spectacular vistas.

Old Town in Sozopol

When planning a trip to Sozopol, it’s worth noting that it’s one of the oldest cities in this region of Europe. As per numerous sources, the earliest references to Sozopol date back to before the 3rd millennium BC. What other notable facts should you be aware of? Well, Sozopol was a bustling trade city, and the Old City concludes at the rugged Skamni Cape.

The Old Town of Sozopol is, first and foremost, intriguing. Its architecture, apart from Bulgarian, bears significant Turkish and Greek influences. As you stroll through the older parts of Sozopol, you’ll be drawn to the wooden structures and vintage houses. It’s interesting to note that such wooden buildings are a trademark of the Bulgarian Renaissance. They bring to mind the era of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, which is associated with the Bulgarian Renaissance.

What else is worth exploring in the Old Town of Sozopol? There are numerous points of interest, including:

The Ethnographic Museum

The late antique and medieval city fortress walls

The foundations of the medieval church

The amphitheater

The Orthodox Church of St. Cyril and Methodius

Diuni Beach (located just outside Sozopol – this beach is known for its abundant seashells).

As for my personal experience on the beach, I have to refrain from commenting as I visited the city in October. Even though the weather was quite pleasant (more on that later), I didn’t anticipate needing a bathing suit and so didn’t bring one along.

Temperature and Weather in Sozopol

Sozopol is an excellent holiday spot for those who relish relaxation. Sightseeing in the peak season amidst 30-degree heat is feasible, but it’s generally more comfortable when the holiday rush has subsided. We visited Sozopol in late October, and the daytime temperature reached a pleasant 27 degrees. However, spending winter in Bulgaria isn’t as popular as, for example, in Spain, due to the colder climate and chilly winds from the North Sea. Additionally, the volume and frequency of precipitation might be excessive for those seeking to escape the winter season.

Where to Eat in Sozopol?

In Sozopol, you’ll discover numerous delightful restaurants, pubs, and cafes. I have a particular fondness for Bulgarian food and would wholeheartedly recommend that you try the local cuisine, including the pastries. The Shopska salad, meatballs, and Bulgarian wine make for an ideal lunch or dinner plan.

One excellent spot for sampling these delicacies is the Riviera Restaurant, which offers a view of the Black Sea. This eatery is conveniently situated on the promenade, adjacent to the ancient city walls. Their homemade cheesecake paired with green fig jam is a treat not to be missed. Though delectable, be forewarned – it’s incredibly sweet.

Sozopol – Accommodation

Sozopol offers a broad spectrum of accommodation options, ranging from hotels and guesthouses to rental apartments. The prices for these accommodations depend not just on the establishment’s quality, but also largely on the season. During off-peak times, the cost can be considerably lower, so if your vacation timing is flexible and you’re looking to save money, perhaps postponing your trip until September could be a good idea? Another alternative would be to book accommodation in the surrounding areas, which are equally beautiful.

Is It Worth Visiting Sozopol?

After reading this post, it should be clear that the answer is a resounding yes! Sozopol offers stunning views, abundant sunshine, and guarantees a far-from-boring experience. Moreover, the city’s atmosphere is incredibly inviting, and I personally plan on returning to Sozopol. Perhaps I’ll visit earlier in the year next time to take advantage of swimming in the sea.

My guide merely scratches the surface of what this city has to offer. Personally, I know I have many more reasons to revisit Bulgaria, as the list of intriguing places and attractions is extensive.

Nessebar (also called Nesebar, so I will use the names interchangeably in the entry) is sometimes referred to as the pearl of the Black Sea. This doesn’t surprise me at all, as it is a truly beautiful and charming town. It captivates visitors with its historic old town and ancient buildings, and its ancient part was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. I visited Nessebar in autumn when the weather on the coast was perfect for sightseeing and enjoying the views. Additionally, the sunsets at this time of year were phenomenal.

History of Nessebar:

The ancient part was once a separate island. When visiting, you will come across many attractions. You will have the opportunity to observe traditional Bulgarian architecture, visit interesting museums, and buy lovely souvenirs.

What is the history of this charming town?

Initially, the town was a Thracian settlement. Later, it became a Greek colony and was called Mesembria. The Romans then took over the town, and in the 5th century AD, it was under Byzantine rule. The name Nessebar began to be used only from the 11th century AD.

In the meantime, the Bulgarians managed to reclaim their land, but in 1453 they lost control of the town again. Nessebar was taken over by the Turks, which was by far the worst period for the town, as it began to decline. However, there are a few remnants from this period, including Turkish baths and a traditional well. Some of the architecture is also associated with Turkey.

It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the town began to take on its present-day character. New buildings in the characteristic Bulgarian style were erected, and the town began to grow. Consequently, the 20th century was a period of intense growth and development for Nessebar. It was during this time that this seaside town became one of the main tourist destinations on the Black Sea.

Attractions in Nessebar

What is worth seeing in Nessebar? Certainly, a lot of historical buildings. In my opinion, it is simply pleasant to walk around this town. You will undoubtedly be delighted by the numerous Orthodox churches. This Bulgarian resort has even earned the nickname “city of 40 churches”. I recommend visiting, among others, the Church of St. John Aliturgetos, the Church of St. Stephen, which today houses a museum, or one of the most beautiful in the city – the Church of St. John the Baptist. The ruins of the Church of St. Sophia are also a must-see; it is the oldest church preserved in Nessebar.

Church of Christ Pantocrator:

Another place worth visiting is the Church of Christ Pantocrator, which is one of the best-preserved buildings in the city and is truly impressive. There is a museum inside, and the entire building is surrounded by an unusually colorful garden full of various species of flowers.

Church of the Holy Mother of God

One of the more contemporary religious buildings in the city is the Church of the Holy Mother of God. Regular services are still held here. Inside, you will be delighted to see, among other things, a typical Orthodox altar, as well as paintings and frescoes. The walls of the building are surrounded by abundant vegetation, which looks quite interesting.

Historic Mill

The symbol of the city is the historic mill, located on the isthmus connecting the modern part of the city with the ancient one. The historic mill (The Windmill) can only be admired from the outside, but it remains an attraction. Next to it, there is a beautiful view of the Sunny Beach coast. It’s not far from the main city gate and the remains of the walls that once surrounded the entire city.

Archaeological Museum

Also noteworthy are the Archaeological Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. In the former, you will find an interesting and extremely valuable collection of icons for which Nessebar is famous. In the latter, you can admire an exhibition introducing the customs and traditions associated with Macedonian settlers.

Nessebar – Atmospheric Streets

The undoubted attraction of the town is simply the local streets, where locals display their souvenir stalls. In the low season, they are incredibly photogenic.

Walking along the streets, at every step, you can come across very characteristic houses. There are many of them here! They have a stone first floor and an upper floor with a wooden, slightly protruding structure. One gets the impression that this part hangs over the street. Such a solution is extremely practical, as it provides a lot of shade on a hot day.

Lastly, I recommend taking a walk along the promenade, which runs along the sea and around the old town. From it, you can enjoy beautiful views of the coastline and the old town. It’s definitely worth a trip here at sunset.

Bourgas is located in the southeast of Bulgaria on the Bay of Bourgas, which is part of the Black Sea. The city is one of Bulgaria’s major resorts and serves as Bulgaria’s largest port. The city and its surroundings attract many tourists every year in the high season.

Bourgas is beautifully located, on one side we have the bay, and on another side, the city is surrounded by as many as 3 lakes: the Mandrenskiy, Atanasovskiy, and Bourgas Lakes. That’s why you’ll find here a mass of different attractions and many places for really long walks, not only along the seaside.

This is an interesting destination for a trip that is also attractively priced. We paid just 35 euro per person round-trip for flights from Poland.

Sea Garden – the best place for a walk

Seaside Park, the so-called Morska Gradina, is one of the biggest attractions in Bourgas. It is a vast area that sits on a hill and offers a beautiful view of the sea and the local beaches. This green zone stretches for almost 7 kilometers and runs right on the seashore! Seaside Park is a place where you will go for a walk, lunch, or coffee.

In the park you will find a Polish accent – a monument to Adam Mickiewicz stands here. Why? The writer, while traveling to Istanbul. stopped and stayed for some time just in Bourgas. In addition, one of the streets in the city was also dedicated to him. In addition to the monument to the Polish poet, you will also see many monuments to other artists here.

The Sea Garden gathers many locals on its grounds every day, and of course tourists in the season, it is in a way the heart of the city. There is the Summer Theater, for example, which accommodates many fans of music, theater, and culture in general. This is because festivals, musical evenings, and plays are held here.

You should certainly come to the park and visit the local cafes or restaurants, you may even be interested in the casino. You will also find a lot of attractions for children here. Not far from the cultural zone is a zoo, and in addition to it there are many playgrounds in the park.

The park also features a color-changing fountain and a flower exhibition, which you will be able to admire right at the entrance to this green heart of the city. Everything is crowned with exotic palm trees in large pots, which add to the holiday atmosphere of the place.

Ezero Park and Sand Sculpture Festival

Right next to the Sea Garden is Ezero Park, which is an extension of it. It’s a place where you can enjoy the many activities available, such as horseback riding and playing tennis. The park, however, is famous for a completely different kind of entertainment.

The Sand Sculpture Festival has been held here for more than 14 years. Every year a different theme is chosen, and the sculptures that the artists create the look very realistic! Some of them reach a considerable size. We didn’t see this one, but you may be able to check it out – let us know in the comments.

The sculptures are created on the themes of cartoon characters or fairy tale heroes, and up to 2,500 tons of sand are used to create them! You can admire these interesting sand sculptures from June until the end of the summer season, every day between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., and you will pay only a few – a dozen zlotys per conversion.

Birdwatching in Bourgas: flamingos and much more

For a unique opportunity to observe birds in their natural habitat, take a trip to the “Poda” protected area. This is quite a treat for nature fans, and bird lovers, but also for children.

Thanks to this nature reserve, among other things, Bourgas is sometimes even called the bird capital of Bulgaria. It doesn’t surprise me at all, I have seen many species of birds that I didn’t have a chance to see before, and only observed them from the car window during trips around the city!

You can meet up to 430 species of birds here. Dominant among them are pelicans, cormorants, and eagles. Traveling around the area, you can also spot flamingos – we saw them from a distance and it was a really interesting experience.

Pink Lake and salt panes

The Bourgas area is famous for its lakes, and you will see larger and smaller reservoirs that form a whole complex. One of the lakes is Atanasovsko, which is called the Pink Lake because of its color. You can visit it during the summer season, unfortunately, in the off-season, the area is closed to tourists.

Pink Lake is one of the spots you must see while in the area. The color of the lake provides a beautiful backdrop for photos, but that’s not all! The water in the reservoir has medicinal properties, so it’s worth bathing in it and spending a long while.

The entire complex of surrounding lakes was designed to make it possible to extract salt. It is the largest complex of the lake in Bulgaria. It is precisely such a high salinity of the water that causes its health-promoting effect on the body while bathing. Swimming in the lake, we gently float on the water, it works similarly to the Dead Sea.

An additional attraction here is the salt pan. This is nothing more than simply a free spa. You can come to this place to bathe in the small salt pools, and then apply a mask of the local mud to your body and wash it off after about 15-20 minutes. What one doesn’t do for beauty!

It is worth noting that the entire area is protected, as it is inhabited by rare animal species, especially birds. For example, we will meet here the Etruscan Shrew, which is one of the smallest mammals in the world.

The port and St. Anastasia Island

This largest port in the country is home to all kinds of ships, whether private, cruise, or industrial. I recommend this place for a walk and a quick coffee or lunch overlooking the bay. It is especially worth going here during sunset.

The port has recently undergone modernization and today is a modern and fashionable place that attracts both locals and tourists. You can go here not only for a walk, but also to visit the planetarium.

The port, however, houses another attraction. Boats depart from it, with which you can get to St. Anastasia Island, which lies nearby. This is a tiny island where a monastery and a lighthouse reign supreme. Here you will also see an interactive museum where you will discover the island’s history.

Interestingly, the island is sometimes called the Eastern European Alcatraz, because the monastery located there once served as a prison.

Other attractions worth seeing

As for historic or interesting places in Bourgas, you will find quite a few of them here. In the very center of the city are the large Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church, the Ethnographic Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Archaeological Museum.

It’s also worth taking a walk along Aleko Bogoridi, an alley that is closed to traffic and is the main street in Bourgas. This is the place where you will shop, and buy souvenirs, but also eat well in the numerous restaurants and cafes.

A big attraction in the city and the surrounding area, especially for those who like to swim and relax in the water, are also Aguapolis, which is a water park, as well as the Roman Baths of Thermopolis.

In season, of course, the main entertainment here is the large sandy beach, which is adjacent to the Seaside Park, and the long pier.

Where to eat in Bourgas?

Bulgarian cuisine is a result of various influences from neighboring countries. Thus, food in Bulgaria, or Bourgas as well, is similar to Greek or Turkish cuisine, for example. Bulgarians like to cook soups and are fond of vegetables and fruits, and when it comes to sweets, we can taste baklava here, for example.

A popular spice in Bulgaria is chubrin – which is dried savory or a mixture of paprika and other herbs. Famous dishes include, for example, Banica, a baked pancake layered with cheese, which is served with Ayran, and a salty yogurt for drinking, which is popular here.

Restaurants often serve seafood and snacks such as roasted peppers, fries with cheese, or a variety of sandwich pastes.

Certainly in Bulgaria, you can’t complain about the size of the portions, they are usually really solid and often at a good price. I particularly liked the shepherd’s salad, which is a vegetable salad with sheep’s cheese, a bit similar to a Greek salad.

I recommend to you the Flora Bar & Grill Bourgas restaurant, where we had a nice time and a delicious pizza, salad, and lunch.

Bulgaria is a good destination for those who like gluttons, so it’s worth going to Bourgas for coffee and delicious pastries. I recommend you Caffetteria Milano – the cakes at this cafe were truly insane!

Where to sleep in Bourgas?

In Bourgas, you can easily find accommodation in different places and of different levels. You can book here quite inexpensive (especially in low season) Airbnb or seaside camping, but you can also use luxury hotels.

In the city, you will find most 3-4 star facilities and apartments or guesthouses from private owners. We paid 247 PLN for 3 nights accommodation with a sea view in the low season.

<ins class="bookingaff" data-aid="2323672" data-target_aid="2323672" data-prod="map" data-width="100%" data-height="590" data-lang="ualng" data-dest_id="0" data-dest_type="landmark" data-latitude="42.5047926" data-longitude="27.4626361" data-mwhsb="0" data-address="Burgas, Bulgaria">

When going to Bourgas, remember that it is not an atmospheric small, and charming seaside town. It is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria and the second in terms of seaside resorts.

A national road also runs through the town, so it is well-connected to the surrounding area and the entire country. However, don’t let its size repel you, as it makes up for a lot with its location.

I enjoyed my time in Bourgas, however, I would recommend this city more for a day trip when visiting Sozopol or Nessebar, which are, however, much more picturesque and atmospheric.
