Keszthely is a Hungarian city located on the western shore of Lake Balaton. It has just over 20,000 inhabitants and is the second largest city on the mentioned lake. It is not only a charming resort and bustling tourist center but also an important cultural and educational hub in the region. Keszthely is a great holiday destination due to its beaches, monuments, and streets that you can stroll through endlessly.

Festetics Family Palace

The Festetics Palace is a Baroque palace built in 1745 by Kristóf Festetics. Over the next hundred years, it was gradually expanded – ultimately its size tripled. The final stage of construction took place at the end of the 19th century. Today, the palace consists of 101 rooms and is surrounded by extensive English-style gardens. The building houses a museum telling the story of the founding family.

Many decorative elements in the salons were brought from England in the 19th century by Mary Hamilton, the wife of one of the Festetics – including portraits, furniture, and other decorations. If you visit the famous palace, be sure to pay attention to the Louis XIV Salon, the dining room, the Long Gallery, and the private chapel.

The summer opening hours of the Palace are from April 1st to October 31st. During this time, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00. In the remaining months, the property is open to guests from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. The combined family ticket (admission fee to the castle and park) is 7,000 HUF for a family of up to 2 adults and 2 children aged 6-18. Remember that the ticket office closes 1 hour before the end of opening hours.

Helikon Library

The Helikon Library is the only remaining aristocratic library in Hungary. It is the largest of its kind in Europe. The collections miraculously survived World War II and were amassed over nearly two centuries. This place is a dream come true for every book lover.

The library’s collection occupies two floors and consists of up to 100,000 volumes. It includes unique copies, early printed books, numerous artistic and scientific books, as well as a musical collection of manuscripts by Haydn and Goldmark. The oak shelves and furniture of the Helikon Library were carved in 1801 by the craftsman János Kerbl. All of this together makes a huge impression.

Hunting Museum

The Hunting Museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the Festetics Family Palace, specifically behind the castle park. It presents the world of aristocratic customs, such as hunting, and also educates about the wild life of our planet through interesting exhibitions. This makes the museum worth visiting with children.

Among the exhibits, you can admire trophies, carpets made of animal fur, weapons, and paintings depicting animals, which were essential decorations of the former manors and palaces. In the wings of the building, exhibitions presenting about 220 species of wild life from American, Asian, and African rainforests are displayed.

The entrance fee is 1300 HUF for adults and half of that amount for children. Opening hours depend on the season. From July 1st to August 31st, the museum is open from Monday to Sunday (except Wednesday) from 9:00 to 18:00, on Wednesday from 9:00 to 12:00. From September to June, the facility is open from 10:00 to 17:00.

Városi Strand Beach

Városi Strand, or City Beach, is located almost in the center of Keszthely. It covers an area of ​​35,000 square meters and attracts both tourists and locals with its beauty. In addition to the designated area for typical beach relaxation, there are also courts for playing sports such as volleyball, basketball, and handball.

This is an ideal beach for families with children because one of the main attractions here is the Water Park Keszthely, which will surely appeal to the youngest. In addition to that, there are playgrounds and water games available, and in the summer, animators can take care of the children. Lifeguards are also stationed on the beach to ensure safety. And when you get hungry, you don’t have to worry because you’ll find 12 gastronomic establishments on the City Beach premises.

The ticket office with an adjacent free parking lot is open from 8:30 to 19:00. Admission fees do not exceed 1000 HUF.

Helikon Beach

Helikon Beach is located in the southern part of Keszthely and is the younger sister of Városi Strand. The beach is really spacious, so there is a place for everyone – even if it’s crowded, which doesn’t happen often. It’s worth knowing that the water is shallow for a long time, so children can freely enjoy swimming.

At Helikon Beach, you can rent a water bike for a fee. Sandy fields allow participation in beach sports. What makes it unique? The library has installed a bookshelf with books so you won’t run out of reading materials during breaks from swimming. In shaded, green areas, you can rest from the sun, play chess, and eat something at local pubs.

Libás Beach

The beach is located on the eastern side of Keszthely. In 2000, it was renovated and has been open to the public since then – for a small fee. It is a sandy beach with a shallow coast and a view of boats arriving at the nearby port. Its advantages include modern changing rooms, showers, toilets, fast-food stalls, and a playground. The numerous trees surrounding it provide much-needed shade.

Lake Balaton

The famous Lake Balaton is the largest lake not only in Hungary but also in Central Europe. Its surface covers as much as 592 km². It was formed roughly 20,000 years ago due to the formation of the Carpathian massif and volcanic activity. It is also called the “Hungarian Sea”. It lies in the southwestern part of the country, about 80 kilometers from Budapest. The average depth of the lake is 3 meters.

Balaton is a well-known center for tourism and recreation. The average water temperature during the summer season, which lasts from June to August, is around 23°C. Besides swimming in the lake, popular activities include fishing and sailing. The surrounding areas are truly picturesque, so it’s worth visiting charming vineyards or resorts.

Balaton Museum

The Balaton Museum building in Keszthely houses an extensive collection of information gathered around Lake Balaton. The numerous exhibitions are divided into permanent and temporary ones and together gather around 380,000 objects. The museum is open all year round and offers an interactive, child-friendly program. The main permanent exhibition is divided into 11 rooms and allows you to learn about the history of Lake Balaton.

The museum is a 10-minute walk from the Main Square and Lake Balaton. If you come by car, nearby parking is free.

Church of Our Lady of Hungary

You can easily find the Gothic Church of Our Lady of Hungary on the Main Square. It is the oldest building in Keszthely, dating back to the 14th century. It was founded by the palatine István Lackfy, who was buried in the temple after his execution in 1397 – his tomb can be found on the sanctuary wall. In 1799, the church became the parish church of Keszthely. Inside the temple, you can find the largest Gothic frescoes in Hungary, which were discovered in 1974.

First on the list is the famed Tavas cave in Miskolc-Tapolca. Indeed, what makes this bathing facility stand out is its unique location—inside a cave! The blend of natural thermal springs and the ambiance of the cave together craft one of the world’s most distinctive bathing experiences.

Miskolc – Highlights of the City

The crown jewel of Miskolc is undoubtedly its Old Town. A stroll through its alleys allows one to marvel at historic structures, with Széchenyi Street standing out in particular. This pedestrian-friendly street, lined with 19th-century houses, immerses you in Miskolc’s rich history and bygone aura.

Diósgyőr Castle

A must-visit landmark is Diósgyőr Castle, one of the area’s most significant monuments. For centuries, this castle has been at the heart of the region’s history. Situated in what was once the independent town of Diósgyőr, it is now a part of Miskolc. While some believe its origin traces back to the 12th century, the existing Gothic edifice was constructed post the Tartar invasion. Its pinnacle was during Louis the Great’s reign when it boasted the grandest knights’ hall in Europe. Subsequent rulers included Hungarian kings, leading up to the era of Turkish dominion. Regrettably, by the close of the 17th century, the castle had deteriorated to a point of being uninhabitable.

Of late, the castle has been the backdrop for diverse cultural events and historic recreations. In 2016, I had the privilege of attending a horse show there. However, as of 2023, it’s under renovation and was not open for visits.

Lillafüred

A visit to Miskolc would be incomplete without a detour to Lillafüred. Intriguingly, the name ‘Lillafüred’ finds its roots in Baron Béla Vay’s daughter’s name, Erzsébet, affectionately known as Lilla. The suffix ‘füred’ denotes a bathing place. Nestled at the mountain’s base, Lillafüred is a scenic village celebrated for its majestic palace overlooking Lake Hamori, its distinctive waterfall, caves (Anna Cave, Szeleta Cave, Szent István Cave), and terraced rock gardens.

Reaching there is easy—while many opt for a train journey, driving is equally convenient.

A noteworthy tidbit about the waterfall is its artificial origin. Standing at 20 meters, its flow wanes during drier periods. To maintain its cascade, water from Lake Hamori is occasionally redirected.

Another focal point is the Lillafüred Palace Hotel, an architectural marvel built between 1925 and 1929. Crafted in the Neo-Renaissance style from Kálmán Lux’s designs, this hotel stands as a prominent landmark. While staying there might be a premium experience, it’s reputed to offer value that matches its cost.

Beech Mountains and Bükki National Park

A visit to the vicinity of Miskolc would be incomplete without exploring the Bükki National Park. An oasis for nature enthusiasts, this park beckons with its scenic mountain trails and the opportunity to spot distinct flora and fauna. It’s a haven for trekkers, offering sweeping vistas of the landscapes below. Several years back, we opted for an agritourism stay here, and the experience was simply splendid. Particularly during summer’s peak, the Beech Mountains offer a cooler respite. However, it’s in the fall that these mountains truly come alive with a riot of colors.

Accommodation in Miskolc

When considering a stay in Miskolc, there’s a spectrum of choices catering to diverse preferences and budgets. Whether you’re inclined towards hotels, apartments, guesthouses, or campsites, there’s something for everyone. During my trips, I’ve stayed in two distinct places: a pet-friendly apartment on the city’s fringe, boasting a sauna, and a mountainous accommodation (which, regretfully, seems to no longer be available).

While Miskolc doesn’t top the charts as a tourist hub, it’s essential to know this upfront. Personally, I’d advocate for a stay in Eger – it’s vibrant, teeming with pubs and brimming with energetic tourists. It’s a recommendation I stand by. But if a tranquil escape is what you’re after, the Beech Mountains promise serenity.

Should You Visit Miskolc?

While Miskolc might not boast the global recognition of Budapest or other Hungarian metropolises, it’s a treasure trove for those keen on discovering niche attractions and delving into Hungarian culture. The previously mentioned cave bath stands out – it’s an unparalleled experience where the soothing embrace of thermal waters meets the mysterious charm of subterranean caves. Such a marvel is a rarity on the global stage.

Lillafüred beckons, particularly for those who have an affinity for breathtaking landscapes and serene strolls. The trifecta of Hámori Lake, the palace, and the waterfall isn’t just a visual treat, but also a hub for activities ranging from hiking to lake kayaking. Diósgyőr Castle, even as it undergoes refurbishment, is a testament to medieval architectural prowess. Once it reopens post-renovation, it’s poised to be an even more prominent tourist magnet.

Nature enthusiasts will find the Miskolc region replete with national parks and reserves. For aficionados of the great outdoors, this area promises ample delights.

Furthermore, Miskolc serves as an optimal base for delving into the region’s illustrious vineyards. Hungary’s acclaim for its fine wines is well-deserved, and neighboring vineyards like those in Tokaj and Eger are havens for wine aficionados. Relishing a wine tasting set against the backdrop of verdant vineyards is an indelible experience.

Situated in northeastern Hungary, close to the city of Miskolc, this cave has captivated tourists from all over the world. What’s more, it’s just 200 kilometers from the border in Subcarpathia!

The Tavas Cave in Miskolc-Tapolca isn’t merely a cave; it’s a breathtaking union of nature and the healing powers of thermal waters. Its standout feature is a maze of narrow corridors brimming with warm water. The moment I learned about this place, I knew I had to visit!

In the following post, I will tell a bit of the history and provide practical information for travelers eager to explore this extraordinary location.

Caves of Miskolc: What You Need to Know

Some practical information:

• This place offers both indoor and outdoor pools, some of which are situated in a natural cave.
• The total length of the cave is 150 meters.
• The water, with a temperature of about 30°C, is renowned for its healing properties, particularly in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
• You can buy a 4-hour ticket (4800 HUF), but also for the whole day (6850 HUF) – here the price list from the official site.
• On the floor there are lockable lockers included in the ticket price, you don’t need to buy anything extra (the information in the price list about “Luggage storage” and “Safe deposit box” can be misleading)
• When you buy a ticket, you receive a wristband, which is the “key” to the locker, on the floor you select a free locker (green light) and after approaching the wristband you code the lock
• Many people confuse these caves with the ones in Tapolca, where you can explore by boat. These are two completely different places, several hours apart.
• The nearest paid parking lot that we used is at the Hotel Kitty. There are free spaces there in the morning, payment in advance for the whole day in cash about 7 EUR. At a greater distance from the thermal baths there is a parking lot on the street, also paid, probably cheaper.

Hot Springs in Miskolc-Tapolca

The water in the cave, with a temperature of 30°C, and the climate of the area together exhibit healing properties, especially beneficial for joint disorders. However, its salinity is lower than that found in typical therapeutic waters, allowing you to bathe in it without any time restrictions. It’s worth noting that the water in the caves is chlorinated. The floor is tiled, so there’s no worry about hurting your feet, and the water level in the cave is not high – it never covered me fully; instead, it reached up to my chest (I’m 164 cm tall).

History of the Cave Bath in Miskolc-Tapolca

The cave and its associated thermal springs were known in ancient times, but it was only after the period of Turkish rule that the place began to be developed as a spa. In 1711, the idea of creating a spa was conceived, and construction began in 1723. At that time, cold water springs were also used, resulting in a temperature lower than that found in today’s baths. Three pools, along with a bathhouse and guesthouse, were constructed. However, the cave itself was not used for bathing at that time. Unfortunately, the spa facilities were neglected in the mid-18th century, and it took almost a century to rebuild the facility. The bathing complex in its current form was not opened until the 20th century.

Reviews of the Cave Bath in Miskolc

After I posted reels on Instagram and it reached more than 3 million people I got half a thousand comments. Most people wrote that they liked it and that the atmosphere was superb.
Others commented that it was too hot, while some found it too cold. Some noted that there were many people, and others pointed out that it was not the newest facility. From my perspective – I visited there on a holiday Sunday morning, starting half an hour after opening – there were no massive crowds. However, I would prefer to go there during the week when, according to statistics, there are the fewest people. Regarding the condition of the facility, it’s not the newest, but I didn’t expect anything different, so there was no disappointment. I had a fantastic time, and although 4 hours may seem long (considering the cave is 150 meters long), there are options to go to the sauna or sunbathe outside. There are also outdoor pools, but I didn’t make use of them.

Eger is a town situated between the Beech Mountains and the Mátra Mountains in northern Hungary. The area is well-known in Poland, mainly for its thermal baths, the Valley of the Beautiful Lady, and its vineyards. It’s important to recognize that the town’s history is intertwined with Turkey, as the Turks controlled Eger for almost a century. This period continues to shape the city’s identity, with the minaret standing as a lasting relic. I will discuss this later. Today, I’ll explore the attractions of Eger, share some tips on what to try here, and suggest some souvenirs worth bringing back with you.

I first visited Eger in 2016 while living in Hungary, and I returned with great pleasure this year (2023) to update this guide.

How to Get to Eger?

We drove to Eger from Szekesfehervar. The highway to Budapest often gets crowded, especially in the summer season when traffic towards Lake Balaton is heaviest. After Budapest, the highway clears, making the trip a sheer pleasure.

Recently, we parked near the minaret where a few free parking spaces were available (Sunday, vacation time).

Eger: First Impressions

Eger greeted us with three things we love: sunny Hungarian weather, good wine, and a beautiful old town. These alone make the place worth an extended stay, and the delectable wine available practically on every corner is reason enough to return.

On our previous visit, we enjoyed Turkish coffee at the Eger Pasa Tent. Unfortunately, it was closed this time, but it might be worth checking if you visit.

What is Worth Seeing in Eger?

When in Eger, don’t miss the historic city center, rich with the region’s history and culture. The majestic Eger Castle, which played a key role in the defense against the Turkish invasion in the 16th century, is a primary sightseeing point.

Furthermore, the thermal baths (hot springs) in Eger attract many Poles, and some of the attractions, including the price list, are available also in the Polish language. So what can one enjoy in Eger besides the pools and thermal springs?

Eger, often termed the pearl of northern Hungary, boasts attractions like:

Old Town, including Dobo Square

István Dobó Square (István Dobó tér), named after the heroic commander István Dobó who led the defense of Eger against the Turks, is a famous landmark in Eger. It serves as the heartbeat of the historic city, a melting pot of culture, history, and everyday life.

After a recent renovation, the square is now adorned with restaurants, quaint shops, a flowing river, and an array of blooming flowers in the summer. Numerous historical buildings and houses encircle the square, their architecture presenting a fusion of styles that have developed over centuries. The statue of István Dobó takes pride of place in the center of the square.

Church of St. Anthony of Padua

For those of a religious bent, the Church of St. Anthony of Padua offers the opportunity to light a candle with an intention. You can even attend Mass in your native language on Sundays.

Eger Castle

Eger Castle, erected around 1261, rose to fame following a significant battle in 1552, during which Captain István Dobó and his crew of Hungarian soldiers successfully repelled an assault by the mighty Ottoman army.

Today, Eger Castle stands as one of the city’s most noteworthy and impressive monuments. Beyond the guided tours, the castle also provides a fantastic viewpoint for admiring the city and its surrounding landscapes, especially when the minaret is closed.

Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Eger

 The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Eger, one of the country’s largest cathedrals and a pivotal religious emblem of the region, is known for its striking classical architecture.

While I will not delve into its architectural details, it’s essential to note that the building’s scale will amaze most visitors, regardless of their interest in religious sites. Its magnificence is equally apparent both inside and out.

Eger Minaret

The minaret in Eger, a leftover from the Turkish occupation between 1596 and 1664, towers over the city, creating a memorable impression.

Reaching a height of 40 meters, it boasts a balcony at the 26-meter mark, encircled by a hand-forged iron balustrade. To access the tower’s interior, visitors must ascend a spiral staircase comprising 98 narrow, steep steps.

Érsekkert – A Park in Eger

 Érsekkert is a beloved city park that offers locals and tourists a tranquil space to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. Adorned with various fountains and ponds, this park provides an idyllic setting for picnics, leisurely walks, or simply unwinding in the fresh air.

The Valley of the Beautiful Lady

The Valley of the Beautiful Lady, renowned for its abundance of cellars, is a treasure trove of the region’s celebrated wines like Egri Bikavér and others. A tour of the vineyards, coupled with a tasting of the local wines, is an unmissable experience for any wine aficionado. Several restaurants in the area serve traditional dishes, complementing the wine tasting. The menus are available in both English and Polish.

In addition to indulging in wine tasting, this is an excellent place to stock up on your favorite wines. A fascinating fact worth mentioning is that the highest vineyards in Hungary can be found on the slopes of the Nagy-Eged mountain, which towers above the city of Eger at 501 meters above sea level.

Other Attractions in Eger Eger boasts an array of attractions, and the ones mentioned above only scratch the surface. Additional points of interest include:

Where to Eat in Eger?

 Eger offers an abundance of dining options. Whether you’re craving traditional Hungarian cuisine, pizza, or something entirely unique, you’ll find it in Eger. Recommended: Visit Palacsintavár Étterem on Dobó István Street for delicious sweet and savory pancakes. Just across the street, you’ll find a charming langos pub. You might also want to explore local stores in Eger for tasty souvenirs or wines (though these can be conveniently purchased in the Valley of the Beautiful Lady).

What to Explore Near Eger?

 When in Eger, consider a trip to Lillafüred. Another site deserving attention is Egerszalok, a limestone hill surrounding a hot spring, reminiscent of Pamukkale in Turkey. Sounds appealing, doesn’t it? On my first visit, I stayed in a quaint village in the Beech Mountains, enjoyed forest walks, and indulged in evening barbecues and vineyard-fresh wine. This combination proved to be the perfect relaxation recipe! The Beech Mountains National Park is also especially beautiful in autumn. On my second visit, I stayed in Miskolc and explored the area, including the cave thermae (which I’ve described elsewhere).

What to Buy in Eger?

 If you’re interested in traditional Hungarian souvenirs, you’ll find plenty to choose from. While in the Valley of the Beautiful Lady, consider visiting one of the many vineyards and purchasing wine that won’t give you a headache, even if you overindulge slightly. Culinary enthusiasts will relish tasting local wines, especially the famed Egri Bikavér, known as “Bleeding Bull of Eger.” Outside Eger, I personally recommend a specific winery for its unforgettable red, white, and rosé wines. Keep an eye out for handicrafts and regional products, perfect for mementos.
