Bagni San Filippo – Picturesque hot springs in the heart of Tuscany. These natural thermal pools are an undeniable attraction of the region, offering not only relaxing baths but also beautiful surroundings (a forest!) and healing properties. Additionally, this place is free of charge, and in my opinion, it is one of the best attractions in all of Tuscany.

The springs are named after the village and dedicated to San Filippo Benizi’s church. Of course, these are not the only hot springs in Tuscany, as this region is simply full of them. In addition to wild springs in nature, you’ll also find elegant pools, hotels, and spas to please even the pickiest of visitors.

Bagni San Filippo – Temperature and Smell

At Bagni San Filippo, the water is extremely hot, reaching temperatures as high as 50+ degrees Celsius. This temperature is found in the highest reservoirs, right at the source. The lower you go, the cooler it gets.

Thermal springs are famous for their aromas. In the case of Bagni San Filippo, the smell is not too intense, and after a short while, you can hardly notice it. As you may know, the water in these springs is rich in minerals that have beneficial effects on the skin and musculoskeletal system.

Bagni San Filippo – How to Get There and Where to Park?

To reach the springs, you drive along the road that leads to “Fosso Bianco.” On-site, there are designated parking areas along the road. Some places are paid and marked with blue lines, while free parking spots are located further away, marked with white lines. It is not necessary to purchase a parking ticket in those free areas. In my opinion, the best place to park is along Via Fosso Bianco.

Bagni San Filippo – What Is It Like There?

Most people head to the limestone pool complex, which is truly lovely and a popular “Instagram” spot attracting many tourists. However, I recommend visiting the pools at the beginning of the path. The lower one, which is better seen from the pathway, is larger, while the upper one (smaller and suitable for a couple or two) is very hot, allowing you to quickly relax under its temperature.

Is It Worth Visiting the Springs of San Filippo?

After a busy tour of Tuscany or a long day on the trails, taking a dip in the warm waters of Bagni San Filippo is a great way to relieve fatigue. In my opinion, San Filippo is the perfect place for relaxation and recovery.

It’s not just the health benefits and relaxation in the warm water that attract people to Bagni San Filippo. These hot springs are surrounded by wild forests and picturesque mountain scenery, creating an atmosphere of peace and harmony with nature. Numerous hiking trails can be found here, providing opportunities to walk in the countryside and enjoy the beauty of the Tuscan landscape. Overall, a visit to the springs of San Filippo is definitely worth it for those seeking a rejuvenating and serene experience amidst the stunning natural surroundings.

Best and Worst Times to Visit

While any time is good for a dip in the hot springs, there are some exceptions if you want to avoid the crowds, just like me.

Weekends, especially during the holiday season, attract a lot of tourists, which can affect the overall comfort of the visit, making it less relaxing. The best days to visit the hot springs are weekdays, and the least crowded time is in the morning.

I personally visited Bagni San Filippo in spring, and it was truly pleasant. There were only a few visitors, and the temperature was perfect for exploring the area and relaxing in the thermal pool. Overall, I highly recommend visiting during the weekdays and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and serene experience of the springs.

Accommodation in Bagni San Filippo

Despite being a small village, Bagni San Filippo offers various accommodation options for visitors. The most popular choice is agritourism, where farms provide lodging and meals, often prepared from local products. This presents a fantastic opportunity to experience an authentic Italian countryside lifestyle.

However, I recommend checking availability and booking accommodation in advance, especially during the tourist season, when places can quickly get fully booked.

Tuscan Attractions

Bagni San Filippo serves as an excellent base for exploring other attractions in the southern part of Tuscany. Nearby, you’ll find Pienza, a town renowned for its beautiful Renaissance architecture, and Montalcino, famous for producing excellent wines.

When traveling in Tuscany, it’s hard to decide which towns to visit. There are plenty of them, and each is unique in its own way. However, some places are much more memorable than others, such as San Gimignano.

Known as the Medieval Manhattan, San Gimignano is one of the most interesting towns in Tuscany, near Siena. It is famous for its distinctive buildings. Although today it has 14 tall buildings, in the past there were more than 70! The towers were used for shelter in case of raiding thieves and were mostly private.

History of the City – Interesting Facts

Below, I will point out some interesting facts from the very long history of San Gimignano:

• In the 3rd century BC, there was a small Etruscan village on the site of today’s San Gimignano.
• In the 1st century, two patrician brothers, Muzio and Silvio, fleeing a plot against the Roman Republic, founded two castles – Mucchio and Silvia.
• In 450, the city’s name was changed to San Gimignano in honor of Bishop Geminianus, a saint of Modena, who saved the castle from destruction.
• During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the city was mired in conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, as well as family rivalries.
• This rivalry led to the construction of residential towers of increasing height. By the end of the Middle Ages, there were 72 of them, with some reaching 70 meters in height. The city authorities restricted the construction of towers, establishing that none could be taller than the one next to the Palazzo Comunale.
• Interestingly, on May 9, 1300, San Gimignano hosted Dante Alighieri.

Many of you may wonder why such a prosperous city did not grow into a metropolis. The city flourished until 1348 when the Black Death (plague, one of the largest epidemics in human history) struck its residents. The epidemic decimated the population, and San Gimignano surrendered to Florence, causing many towers to be lowered to the height of houses. The town did not develop for centuries, and its tourist value began to be appreciated only in the 19th century.

Attractions of San Gimignano

The biggest attraction of San Gimignano is, of course, the aforementioned towers. The town has managed to preserve fourteen towers of varying heights, which I will list below:

• Campanile della Collegiata
• Torri degli Ardinghelli
• Torre dei Becci
• Torre Campatelli
• Torre Chigi (dating back to 1280)
• Torre dei Cugnanesi
• Torre del Diavolo
• Torre Ficherelli or Ficarelli
• Torre Grossa (from 1311), with a height of 54 meters
• Torre di Palazzo Pellari
• Casa-torre Pesciolini
• Torre Pettini
• Torre Rognosa, with a height of 51 meters
• Torri dei Salvucci

Among the city’s other recognizable landmarks, Piazza della Cisterna, the city’s main square, is noteworthy. With an interesting triangular shape, it is surrounded by medieval townhouses. In the center of the square is a well dating back to 1346, which at the time was the main source of water for residents.

Another famous square is the Cathedral Square, Piazza Duomo. The name of the square suggests that the church was a cathedral, but despite the plans, it was not. On top of it is the Collegiate Church (Collegiata Santa Maria Assunta). There are more churches, and other important buildings in the square are the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Podesta – the mayor’s house, distinguished by its huge arcaded lodge.

San Gimignano – What to Do There?

Walking around this charming town is truly enjoyable. San Gimignano is not about visiting every point. The town is picturesque, located on a hill more than 300 meters above sea level and surrounded by city walls. Therefore, if you visit San Gimignano, be sure to take a walk along the walls; the views are amazing. From practically every place, you can see the Tuscan landscape.

Another vantage point would be the view from the Torre Grossa tower, but you’ll have to work a little hard to get up there ?.

If you feel like visiting museums, there are two: the Museo d’Arte Sacra, a museum of sacred art, and the Museum of Etruscan Art.

And if you’re in town, stop by Gelateria Dondoli for some delicious ice cream – many readers wrote that it was the best ice cream of their lives! The owner claims it’s the best ice cream in the world and has won numerous contests on the subject.

Where to sleep in San Gimignano? There are quite a few places to stay in Tuscany, from agritourism to apartments to amazing hotels, so I’ll list the ones that are best-rated, unique, and may interest you. They are all located in the San Gimignano area.

What are some attractions to visit in Siena? Where is a good place to park in Siena and why? When is the best time to visit Siena?

Siena is one of the most picturesque and fascinating cities in Tuscany. I must admit that when I looked at pictures of Tuscany on various sites or in guidebooks, I thought it was just another interesting Italian town. Oh, how wrong I was! Photos didn’t captivate me as much as seeing this city in person. Siena enchants with its combination of history, culture, and beautiful landscapes.

Many people travel around Tuscany by car. We parked at this location: Parking Il Campo 13, Via di Fontanella, 9, Siena. I recommend it because of its great location. The parking lot is covered, so your car won’t get hot from the sun during summer.

When to visit Siena?

When is the best time to visit Siena, and when is it better to give up? Spring and autumn are the most favorable times to visit Siena. Temperatures are moderate, and the crowds of tourists are somewhat smaller. I visited Siena at the end of March, and it was, in my opinion, the perfect time.

The second time you might be interested in visiting Siena is during the famous Palio di Siena horse races, which take place on July 2 and August 16. The event is amazing, or at least that’s what I’ve heard from people who have had the opportunity to watch it. Of course, the crowds will be at their largest on these dates.

What To Do in Siena

Siena is an ancient Etruscan city that flourished in the 7th century thanks to trade and banking. Today, it is one of the most charming cities in Tuscany. Part of the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace was filmed in the city. These scenes are played out from the city’s underground to the rooftops as Bond pursues a traitor who has infiltrated MI6.

Another interesting fact about Siena is the city’s unique and extremely interesting urban layout. The city is located on three elongated hills that form a triangle on which the entire city rests. The main axes are the main streets that lead to the central Il Campo square, which is the heart of Siena. As a result, this city impresses with its narrow streets and romantic atmosphere.

What is worth seeing in Siena?

You will read about it further on, but I will point out that my list is prepared for a one-day visit. If you want to stay in the city longer, you certainly won’t be bored – there is plenty to do here.

Siena Attractions: Cathedral di Santa Maria Assunta

In the center of Siena is the majestic Cathedral di Santa Maria Assunta. The cathedral is incredibly impressive, and you can stare at it for hours. The cathedral was built between 1215 and 1264 but was still being finished for hundreds of years. It is one of the finest examples of Gothic religious architecture in Italy. Of course, it is worth noting the facade, decorated with numerous sculptures and ornaments. Many elements are built of black and white marble. Interestingly, there are also Polish accents: an image of Our Lady of Czestochowa and a stained glass window dedicated to St. Maximilian Kolbe.

Entrance is ticketed, and during high season, it’s better to buy tickets online.

What to see in Siena? Piazza del Campo

The main square is Piazza del Campo, with its unusual shell shape, and it’s the center of the city. The nine cutouts on the floor symbolize the rule of the Nine Citizens, and at the top of the square is the Fonte Gaia fountain. The city center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

It’s in Piazza del Campo on July 2 and August 16 that you can see the famous horse race in which representatives of Siena’s seventeen districts compete. Interestingly, the division of Siena into seventeen districts has been unchanged since 1729. Why are there as many as two dates? On July 2, the race is held in honor of Our Lady of Provenzanom, while on August 16, it is held in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption.

In this square is the Palazzo Pubblico (Palazzo Communale) or City Hall, and next to it stands a majestic tower, the Torre del Mangia. The Torre del Mangia rises 102 meters and was built between 1338 and 1348. The mysterious name of the tower – “Torre del Mangia” – probably derives from the first guardian and bell-ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio. He was known for his laziness and earned the nickname “mangiaguadagni” (meaning: eater of wages). The tower bell was meant not only to announce the end of the working day but also to signal the opening and closing of the city gates.

Fortezza Medicea

Fortezza Medicea, also known as Fortezza di Santa Barbara, is an imposing fortress located in Siena that is an excellent example of Renaissance defense architecture. The history of the fortress dates back to the time when Fortezza Medicea was a symbol of Medici’s power and control over the city. The history of the place is really interesting, but the most important thing is that today we can walk around the fortress. From it, you can admire the city, and its interiors now serve as a place of walking and recreation for locals and tourists. It is peaceful and beautiful.

The best viewpoint in Siena

Siena is a beautiful city, and there are quite a few viewpoints there. Therefore, it is difficult to choose the best ones. In my opinion, the following are worth visiting:

• a great photographic point is the point above Parking Il Campo 13
• another interesting point in the city would be Vista Panoramica di Siena
• cool photos also come out from Fortezza Medicea

Siena – St. Catherine

Siena, known primarily for its monuments and picturesque streets, also hides a spiritual wealth related to the life of one of the most important saints of the Catholic Church – St. Catherine of Siena. More specifically, Saint Catherine was born, lived, and worked in Siena. She was the penultimate, twenty-fourth child of Sienese weavers (or dyers, depending on sources).

Here are some places to visit while traveling in the footsteps of this figure:

• The House of Santa Caterina (Casa di Santa Caterina) – her family home, now converted into a shrine. Here you can see a reconstruction of the room and the chapel where she was baptized.
• Basilica of San Domenico – an important place for the cult of St. Catherine, as her head is kept here as a relic.
• Fontebranda – this is one of the oldest and most beautiful springs in Siena, visited by St. Catherine in her youth. The water from this spring was used by locals for their daily needs, as well as by Catherine’s father himself in his profession.

In Siena, you will find more places that are associated with the saint. Following in the footsteps of St. Catherine, you can get to know Siena from a completely different perspective – spiritual and mystical.

Shopping in Siena

In Siena, you won’t find as many elegant and expensive boutiques as in Florence. Nevertheless, Siena boasts its unique treasures and places to visit while shopping. The city is home to many stores of well-known brands.

If you’re in Siena on a Wednesday, head to the local market. It is simply huge, and you will find everything there. This is a traditional market where you can buy local food, clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. It’s a great place to get a feel for local life, experience the flavors of Tuscany, and purchase authentic handcrafted products.

It is also worth tasting the excellent wines from the local vineyards. Visit local wineries and delicatessens, where you can purchase excellent wines and other products, such as olive oil, sauces, honey, and cheeses. Some of these places also offer tastings so you can experience the rich flavors of Tuscany.

Where to sleep in Siena?

Regardless of your preferences and budget, you should have no trouble finding an apartment or hotel in the off-season. Siena offers a wide range of accommodations for every tourist, from luxury hotels and charming apartments in the center to idyllic agritourism on the outskirts of the city. However, during the summer season and events such as the Palio di Siena, be sure to book your accommodations in advance.

My answer will come as no surprise. Of course, it is! The city enchanted me. Although Siena does not have as many monuments as Florence, its attractions are equally impressive.

Siena makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding towns and villages in Tuscany, such as San Gimignano, Montalcino, and Pienza. It’s worth staying there for a longer period or booking an overnight stay in the area.

The Leaning Tower has become a symbol of Pisa and one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. It is one of the buildings that I have always wanted to see. Often, as with dreams, they look completely different in person. However, this was not the case here; the Leaning Tower did not disappoint me. 

Let me start with a personal story: I do not think that I would have seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa had it not been for my friend Simona. I met Simona during my Erasmus in Turkey, and after the semester ended, I visited her in Pisa. I flew to Milan because it was the fastest (and then cheapest) option, and the drive to Pisa from Milan allowed me to discover the beauty of the Italian landscape. The trip took about three hours. 

After arriving at Pisa Centrale station, I went to Simona’s apartment, where she offered me accommodation for a few days. Thanks to her knowledge of local attractions and curiosities, I was able to experience the authentic face of Pisa. 

What is it like in Pisa? Is it worth going there just to see the Leaning Tower? I will tell you about it in this entry. 

Attractions of Pisa 

During my stay, I visited many sights and attractions. I spent some time in the Piazza dei Miracoli, which was bustling with tourists and locals. Of course, during the tour I couldn’t miss the Leaning Tower, which impressed me with its unusual construction and history. Pisa also offers many other attractions, such as museums, art galleries, and parks. In my free time, I strolled through the historic streets, exploring local stores and cafes. 

A visit to the Cathedral and St. John’s Baptistery also left an unforgettable impression. Both buildings were stunning with their beautiful architecture and rich interior design. 

Leaning Tower of Pisa: What to Know 

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most famous and characteristic buildings in the world. 

Let me start perhaps by saying that it is part of the historic complex of Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Campo dei Miracoli consists of the aforementioned cathedral, baptistery, cemetery, and bell tower, known as the “Leaning Tower.” 

Here are some interesting facts to know about this unique monument: 

• Work on the tower began in 1174 and lasted for 199 years. The designers were Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano. The structure was built of marble and has eight stories, including a bell tower at the top. 
• The Leaning Tower of Pisa owes its name and fame to its unusual stance. The tower’s charm lies in its unusual tilt, which is the result of ground settlement during construction. The slope is about 5 degrees. 
• It is possible to climb to the top of the Leaning Tower, but the number of people who can do so at once is limited for safety reasons. Climbing the tower is done in groups, and tickets can be purchased on-site or booked in advance online. 

• The tower was restored between 1990 and 2011. Work was carried out over the years to secure the structure from further tilting. This was worked on by a team of architects of Polish origin, Michele Jamiolkowski (I recommend reading the history of this outstanding man). 

Pisa: Where to Eat? 

I have a few places to recommend: 

• Vero Bistro – a perfect place for a morning cappuccino 
• Panificio Silvestri – they serve delicious buns, and there is also pizza and focaccia available. 

We ate our lunches at home or traveled further, such as to Florence, exploring Tuscany. In the evenings, I spent time with Simona and her friends, who were happy to show me the local bars. We drank wine and ate pizza, and in this way, I was able to experience the Italian nightlife culture. It was an unforgettable trip full of wonderful experiences and beautiful memories. If you want to follow in my footsteps, head to Piazza delle Vettovaglie, where you can feel the local atmosphere, drink wine, and eat pizza. 

Where to sleep?

Pisa’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding attractions and picturesque landscapes. Tourists can choose from a variety of accommodation options, ranging from cozy guesthouses to luxurious hotels. There are also apartments or beautiful villas.

Pisa: Is it Worth To Visit? 

Some people say that on a trip to Tuscany, you should skip Pisa, that there are many more interesting places. If you are not interested in the Leaning Tower, then by all means. However, in my opinion, Pisa is a city worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is a city filled with interesting places to visit. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway or an activity-packed vacation, Florence has something for everyone. From stunning architecture and art to shopping and cuisine.

I know that among my readers, there are many fans of Florence. I have been there twice, and I must admit that there is something about Florence that stirs the imagination. Of course, that’s if there aren’t huge crowds of tourists. Before I start telling you about the city’s attractions, I must warn you: Florence can be quite crowded, as you will see in some of the photos in this post.

How to Get to Florence and Where to Park a Car

You can reach Florence by taking a convenient train, for example, from Pisa, or by car. I have used both options, and while the train is straightforward, with a car, the basic question arises: where to park?

When to Visit Florence

Here’s something you need to know: Florence attracts many tourists. It can be difficult to walk in more popular areas, and the queues for attractions sometimes rival those at London’s museums. I visited in July, when it was crowded, but to my surprise, it was just as busy in March (2023). As a result, I find Tuscany’s smaller cities, like Siena, more appealing, simply because I don’t enjoy tripping over thousands of people.

How can you avoid the largest crowds? When should you visit Florence? First, arrive as early as possible. Also, from what I’ve heard, Sunday is not the best day for sightseeing in Florence. It’s much better to visit during the week.

Flights to Florence Airport from Various Locations

Florence Airport, also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR), serves as the primary gateway to the city. While direct flights to Florence are not available from all locations, there are still plenty of options for travelers. Several airlines operate direct flights to Florence from various European cities.

The Best Viewpoint in Florence

Florence is full of attractions you recognize from postcards.

Let’s start our tour at a viewpoint! Here, you can admire the monumental Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral from a distance and take photos that will make their way onto your social media. This well-known spot has a parking lot, but if you arrive, for example, on a Sunday at noon, it might be crowded.

The most important attraction in Florence is the cathedral. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is a remarkable masterpiece, proudly towering over the city. The cathedral measures 153 meters long and reaches a height of 90 meters, making it an impressively monumental structure. Its architecture stands out from practically every point in Florence!

The cathedral’s facade features white, green, and pink stones. Interestingly, the marble comes entirely from Tuscany, sourced from three different towns. Santa Maria del Fiore was designed by notable architects such as Arnolfo di Cambio, Giotto di Bondone, and Filippo Brunelleschi (who designed the dome).

Santa Maria del Fiore is a place where history and art intertwine in surprising ways, offering an unforgettable experience. Take a tour (entry to the cathedral is free) and discover extraordinary paintings, frescoes, and stained glass windows. It’s also worth finding a moment of calm in this place for prayer.

You might ask why I’m writing about free tickets when information about paid admission is everywhere. Let me clarify: entry to the Cathedral is free. However, visits to the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Brunelleschi’s Dome, the Opera del Duomo Museum, and the Basilica of Santa Reparata require tickets and are chargeable. What to See in the Old Town of Florence?

Exploring the Old Town of Florence can take quite some time. If you’re not interested in art and architecture, a day might be enough. But if you love both, a week may not suffice.

The Old Town is home to the aforementioned Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, but that’s just the beginning of Florence’s major attractions. There’s the Galleria degli Uffizi with its art collection, the Palazzo Vecchio with its replica of Michelangelo’s “David” (more on that later), the Ponte Vecchio bridge with its antique stores, and the Church of Santa Croce, where prominent Italians such as Galileo, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli are buried.

Neptune’s Fountain

Neptune’s Fountain is another Florence attraction that I particularly like. Designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati, the Fountain of Neptune in Piazza della Signoria is one of the city’s most beautiful monuments. Constructed from various types of marble (just like the cathedral!), it depicts Neptune on a chariot, with a trident and three tritons at his feet. For many centuries, the fountain suffered damage and vandalism, but in 2017, it underwent major restoration thanks to support from the Ferragamo fashion house. Now, you can once again enjoy the beauty of this historic fountain.

Palazzo Vecchio

Palazzo Vecchio is a historic palace built in the 14th century, originally serving as the city’s town hall. Now a museum, it showcases the city’s rich history and works of art. Inside, you can see the Columned Hall, where official ceremonies were held. Visitors also flock here to see the replica of Michelangelo’s sculpture of David. While the original sculpture resides in the Galleria dell’Accademia, you can admire the replica in front of Palazzo Vecchio.

Ponte Vecchio Bridge

The Ponte Vecchio Bridge is one of Florence’s most iconic attractions. Built in the 14th century over the Arno River (Tuscany’s main river), it is the only bridge in the city that survived World War II. The bridge houses stores that have sold jewelry for centuries and continue to do so today.

Tip: In my opinion, the best view of Ponte Vecchio is from another bridge, such as Ponte alle Grazie. There, you can take the best photos and avoid the crowds.

Galleria degli Uffizi

The Galleria degli Uffizi is a must-visit for art lovers. Housed in a 16th-century palace, this Florence museum boasts one of the world’s largest art collections, including works by Renaissance masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Exhibits feature The Birth of Venus and The Adoration of the Three Kings (Sandro Botticelli), pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, The Holy Family (Michelangelo), and Portrait of Isabella Brandt (Rubens). The Galleria degli Uffizi is not only a treasure trove of art but also a showcase of the palace’s beautiful interiors and architecture, making it one of the most visited museums globally.

Gardens in Florence: Giardino Bardini

If you wish to escape the city’s hustle and bustle, Giardino Bardini is the perfect solution. This historic garden in Florence is located on a hill just a stone’s throw from the city center and offers stunning views of the city and the Arno River. In addition to fountains, terraces, gazebos, and sculptures, you can enjoy a coffee (or wine) with an amazing view. The garden has grown in popularity in recent years and offers a fantastic vantage point. Giardino Bardini is the ideal place to relax and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Tip: If you visit during the off-season, such as in March, you might be disappointed that the vegetation is not as lush as it appears in many photos.

Shopping in Florence

Many people travel to Tuscany for shopping. It’s no surprise, as Florence is renowned for its stores, outlet shops, and markets. The Italian word “mercato” means market or marketplace, where you can buy a variety of products, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese, fish, as well as clothing, shoes, and accessories. Remember to haggle at the market; otherwise, you’ll likely overpay!

In Florence, you can find everything from unique souvenirs to leather products (like shoes and jackets) and luxury stores like Dior or Chanel. We visited the Sunday antique market, which left a great impression on us, and the prices were not higher than in Poland. If you’re interested, the market is located near the aforementioned parking lot.

Where to Stay in Florence?

Florence offers plenty of accommodation options. The most popular area, where everything is within easy reach, is the Centro Storico (Historical Center). This is the heart of Florence, where you’ll find the most important monuments, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. However, keep in mind that staying in this district can be crowded and expensive. Accommodations farther from the center tend to be cheaper, and you’ll find many budget-friendly hotels, B&Bs, and hostels. Remember that Florence isn’t one of the cheapest cities, so sometimes it’s more worthwhile to book accommodation in another location. You can check prices on booking.com, among other platforms.

Is Florence Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Florence is a city brimming with charm, history, and art, attracting millions of tourists from all over the world every year. However, due to its popularity, the city can become quite crowded during the tourist season. To avoid the throngs, plan your visit carefully – for example, visit popular sites early in the morning or late in the evening when most tourists have already left. It’s also a good idea to explore less frequented places, such as Giardino Bardini, to savor the beautiful views. All in all, Florence is an incredible city to visit, but be sure to plan your trip to dodge the crowds.

Tuscany – a magical land in Italy that delights at any time of the year. It is not only the individual points of interest but also the landscapes that inspire.

This region is famous for its picturesque hills, vineyards, olive trees, and fields. Among the hills emerge charming towns, villages, and more famous cities such as Siena and Florence. Walking along the cobbled, narrow streets, you can feel time slowing down!

What is worth seeing in Tuscany? What are the most interesting attractions in this region? If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit Tuscany, I encourage you to do so. Tuscany is beautiful, picturesque, and delightful: extraordinary views and a wealth of culture and traditions. It is the perfect place for a vacation. I have visited Tuscany twice and I know that this is the beginning of discovering interesting places. ?

Remember to taste the local specialties of Italian and Tuscan cuisine during your trip, such as delicious oils, cheeses, or traditional dishes (pizza, pasta). And of course, ice cream!

San Gimignano

San Gimignano is one of the most interesting towns in Tuscany. Called the Medieval Manhattan or the City of Beautiful Towers, it is unique, because of the remaining buildings. Although today it has 14 tall buildings (which is still impressive), in the past there were more than 70! The towers were used for shelter in case of raiding thieves and were private.

Other than that, the town is charming and picturesque. If you’re in the area stop by for some delicious ice cream at Gelateria Dondoli.

Siena

I’ve seen many photos of Siena, but none have captivated me as much as seeing the city in person. Siena delights. The narrow streets, the romantic atmosphere.In the center of Siena is the majestic Cathedral di Santa Maria Assunta. Note its facade, decorated with many sculptures and ornaments. It is one of the finest examples of Romanesque-Gothic sacred architecture in Italy.

One of the interesting facts about Siena is the city’s unique urban layout. Siena was founded on three hills, which form a triangle on which the entire city rests. The main axes are the main streets that lead to the central square Il Campo, the heart of Siena.

If you’re in Siena on a Wednesday, head to the local market. It is huge and you will find everything there. You should also try the excellent wines from the local vineyards.

Abbazia di San Galgano

The Abbey of San Galgano is located in the heart of Tuscany, about 30 km from Siena, among picturesque hills and vast fields. The abbey was founded in the 12th century and was an important spiritual center. And although ruins remain today, weddings are still held there. It is an ideal place for lovers of history, architecture, and nature.

Interesting fact: Near the abbey is the Montesiepi Chapel, where you can see a sword stuck in stone. Legend has it that it was Saint Galgano who hammered the sword that sealed his spiritual transformation (before this event, he was a knight, famous for various crazy activities).

Hot springs: Bagni San Filippo

Tuscany is full of hot springs. Wonderful thermal pools, amazing surroundings, and delicious food – what more could you want? As a result, you’ll find elegant pools, hotels, or spas that will please the most discriminating travelers. But, there are also springs that spring from nature, like San Filippo. The San Filippo Thermae is a true paradise for relaxation lovers, surrounded by natural beauty.

These thermae are free and the most famous part is the “Instagram” one, where you can warm up in the limestone basins. Outside there is a wilder part, where we can have more privacy.

Other free thermal baths in Tuscany are Terme di Saturnia, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni di Petriolo, and San Casciano dei Bagni.

Calanchi formations

Besides, some people visit the mountainous villages, and that’s not all this remarkable region has to offer. For lovers of nature and unusual views, I recommend Calanchi – interesting rock formations. Tuscany is famous for two things: cypress roads and picturesque hills. When visiting Calanchi, you can see landscapes that go beyond the stereotypes of vineyards, cypresses, and golden fields.

Calanchi features fascinating geological formations that seem to emerge from the ground like giant sculptures. Calanchi’s unique landscape is the result of soil erosion. The landscape goes from gentle hills to cliffs, caves, and deep ravines.

Pisa

Who doesn’t associate the Leaning Tower of Pisa? I guess it will be hard to find such a person! The Leaning Tower of Pisa, or Campanile, is not only a symbol of the city but also one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Piazza dei Miracoli, or Miracle Square, where it is located, is the heart of Pisa.

Pisa, but, is not only the Leaning Tower. Walking around the city, you can discover charming streets, atmospheric cafes, or amazing stores. Those who have not been to H&M in Pisa must go there. It’s a real art gallery, and I’ve ever been in a more beautiful store ?

Tuscan landscapes

What does one go to Tuscany for? Definitely for the views! Tuscan landscapes are a fairy tale not only in photos. Ba, it is only more beautiful in person. Depending on the season, the colors of the fields change. And although spring is overrated, I dream of going during the sunflower season ?.

Where are the best views? That’s hard to answer because, , they are everywhere. For sunsets and walks we went near Castelnuovo Berardenga, where we stayed for a week.

Cypress Roads

Cypress roads in Tuscany, are at every turn. Some cypress trees lead to beautiful villas, while others make fine shapes in the fields. They can be found all over Tuscany, and if you are looking for special viewpoints, one famous one is near Pienza (Str. della Foce e Fornace, 7, 53026 Chianciano Terme SI, ItalyMonteriggioni). Another cool point you will find in this localization: Loc. Poderino, 53027, San Quirico D’orcia SI, Italy.

Cypress trees are plentiful, so type “cypress” or “cipresso” in maps to see the nearest point with these trees. ?

Park Fluviale Alta Val D’Elsa

This is a picturesque and somewhat lesser-known place in the heart of Tuscany that delights with its wild and unspoiled by the hand of man. The park stretches along the Elsa River, creating a landscape that is famous for its waterfalls (to be honest, I associate the park with Roztocze in Poland?). It is very charming!

There are numerous hiking and biking trails in the park, you can spend a lot of time there. And while it’s not a place worth going to specifically, it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area (or on your way there).

Florence

The most popular city in all Florence. Florence, also known as the Pearl of the Renaissance, is a city that attracts tourists, and art and history lovers from all over the world. Florence’s magnificent monuments make this city one of the most famous destinations in Italy.

Piazza del Duomo (or Cathedral Square) attracts the largest number of tourists. It is also a city of galleries and museums, and walking through the streets of this city, you can feel the atmosphere of the old times, when great artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo created their works.

Florence is a place that enchants its history, culture, and atmosphere.  I have visited it twice, and unfortunately, I have to admit that the crowds of tourists affect the quality of the tour. The more people, the harder it was for me to experience its charms. I won’t discourage you, but I prefer to warn you. ?

A picturesque chapel in Tuscany: Vitaleta

The most charming chapel in Tuscany? The Vitaleta chapel, located in the heart of Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia, is one of the most picturesque corners of the region. The chapel was built in the 17th century and today is one of the icons of the local landscape. This place attracts both tourists and photographers. Surrounded by idyllic hills and fields, Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta is stunning. I won’t write more, see below:

Volterra

We arrived in Volterra without great expectations. I thought it was a very famous town, where it would be crowded. Oh, how wrong I was! It was not only free of tourists but also beautiful. The views with which Voltera impresses are unmatchable! The city was founded in Etruscan times, and among the main attractions of Volterra is the impressive Roman theater, which was only discovered in the 20th century! Besides, the city is famous for its long tradition of alabaster craftsmanship. You can visit multiplestudios and handicraft stores in the city, and you can watch artists create more works from this white raw material. Impressive.

Although this town made an appearance in the book Twilight, it’s not so popular because another town was used for the film adaptation, Montepulciano to be more precise.

Tip: if you are interested in salt mining, there are very large deposits of salt here. Visit the Museo Saline di Volterra, a museum that is very different from Wieliczka, but can make you curious.

Val d’Orcia

I’ve encountered the term many times and at first, I didn’t know exactly what it meant. Val d’Orcia is an picturesque region in Tuscany, which impresses with idyllic landscapes, picturesque towns, and villages. It’s a great place for walking and contemplating nature. It is so beautiful that the landscapes of the region were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Here you can find the chapel mentioned in the entry or towns such as Pienza and Montalcino.

Monteriggoni

There are quite a few towns in Tuscany starting with “Monte.” There’s no denying it, it’s hard to decide which to choose. Monteriggioni is special: it’s almost a miniature town, surrounded by a wall. From a bird’s eye view it looks amazing, and inside it is charming.

At the time of our visit, the walls were undergoing renovation, so you will be available to visit in the summer. Another interesting Tuscan attraction on your list!

Montepulciano

Montepulciano is another picturesque hilltop town that impresses with its architecture, history, and traditions. I know that many confuse Montepulciano with Montalcino. Both are located on a hill and both are famous for their delicious wines, so you should see for yourself which place you like better.

Among the attractions to discover in Montepulciano are the palaces (such as the Palazzo Comunale), and the churches. It was in this town that a of one part of Twilight was filmed. As I mentioned, the town is famous for producing excellent wine. The red Vino Nobile di Montepulciano enjoys worldwide recognition. It is said to be the best wine in Tuscany!

Interesting fact: under Montepulciano, there is an underground city, consisting of former cellars and crypts, where wine and other products were stored. Some of the underground rooms are open to the public and are intended, for example, for tasting local wines.

Montalcino

Montalcino is a town surrounded by beautiful vineyards and olive groves. Wandering through the cobblestone streets of this town, you can discover many monuments and historical buildings, such as the fortress that rises above the town, and churches or the cathedral.

As I wrote, I know that many confuse Montalcino with Montepulciano. Both towns are located on a hill and are famous for their excellent wines. In my opinion, it is worth seeing for yourself which place you like better. My choice is Montalcino ?.

Here I recommend trying the pizza at Pizzeria al Taglio ” La Torre”. The taste of Italian, homemade pizza is impossible to imitate. And the zucchini pizza – heaven!

Pienza

Pienza is one of the places you recommended to me in the news. I went and… I can say that it was worth it. Pienza is a town that I would love to visit again – it is wonderful. It’s a Tuscan town with stunning architecture and amazing views of the surrounding Val d’Orcia hills. Pienza was transformed from a village (or, more accurately, the home village of Pope Pius II) into a “perfect city” in the 15th century. The Pope commissioned a renowned architect, Bernardo Rossellino, to transform the village into a place in line with Renaissance ideals.

It’s worth coming for one thing. Walk down the Street of Love – Via dell’Amore. Street is a lot of words, for it is a walk along the picturesque city walls.

Attractions in Tuscany

If I had to choose the best attractions in Tuscany, it would be hard. From my “TOP 10” list, I made a lot more points, and still, there are many more attractions in Tuscany. I know that in the news and comments, you will ask about the three most interesting cities. The most memorable for me were Siena, Pienza, San Gimignano, and Volterra. The towns with the prefix Monte were also beautiful.

And what will I see next time? As you might have noticed, I completely skipped the coast during my tour of Tuscany. That is, I was there in passing, but, not long enough to be able to recommend anything. ? Next time in Tuscany I will go to:

– Livorno

– Lucca

– Cortona

– Grosetto

– to the island of Elba

– I will visit the remaining hot springs

– visit two castles or more

– Naturale di Orbetello reserve (wetlands)

Where to sleep in Tuscany?

This is a river topic. It’s hard to say which region of Tuscany is the best, as the final choice depends on individual preferences and what you are looking for during your trip.

In Tuscany, there are hotels of varying standards, from luxurious five-star establishments to cozy, family-run hotels. Particularly popular are agritourism (where they serve regional dishes) and the rental of entire vacation villas.

Renting an apartment or villa is an excellent option for larger groups or families looking for privacy and freedom. These places often have their pool and garden, providing a comfortable getaway.

We rented part of a house with a garden in the Chanti region. Picturesque hills, vineyards, charming towns, and excellent wines are some of the attractions of this area. We wanted to do a lot of sightseeing, especially in southern and central Tuscany, so it was a hit. Although now I would book something closer to the hot springs… ?

You can find our apartment here – I recommend it, it’s clean there, there is a well-equipped kitchen, friendly owners, well, and they accept pets.

When to go to Tuscany?

What is the best time to visit Tuscany? It’s hard to say because it depends on many factors. The most important one is what we would like to do in Tuscany. If you do a lot of sightseeing then summer may be too hot. Spring or even autumn would be better.

If I had to choose which date would be best, I would choose the period from the end of March to June, but Tuscany is beautiful at any time of the year.

I visited Tuscany in the summer (in July) and most recently at the end of March. Although it rained (and rained) during my summer trip to Florence, summer is still a time of more tourists. For sightseeing, it can be too hot for some.
