Are you looking for an interesting city in Europe to visit for the weekend? Full of history, street art, good drinks and at the same time, not too crowded? A good idea would be Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. The city is not as big as Prague or London, although it is the largest city in the country. Belfast has a population of more than 340,000 people.

Belfast is a city with many attractions and places to visit. There is a lot of historical sites to visit, and you will see colorful murals at every corner. In addition, there are several amazing museums there, including Titanic Belfast. Yes, this is where the spectacular ship was built! Also, while you’re in Belfast, you should check out the local festivals. During the time we were exploring Northern Ireland, several interesting events took place (I’ll tell you more about that later). I would like to say that Belfast has an extremely rich history, so in my opinion it is worth walking around the city with a guide.

If you want to know what to see in Belfast and how to organize a trip with interesting spots in the city, take a look at this post.

Belfast – City Tour

We will start our walk around Belfast from the historic part of the city. Belfast is a small city, so it is easy to explore the center on foot, discovering narrow streets, murals and pubs. What is interesting to see in the city?

The oldest part of the city is Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. This is where Belfast Cathedral, known as St. Anne’s Cathedral, as well as many of the city’s most beautiful streets and buildings are located. While you’re exploring, be sure to pop into any of the typical pubs and order something local to drink or eat.

Of the city’s more recognizable features, the Great Fish, also known as the Salmon of Knowledge, stands out. The Harland and Wolff (H&W) crane emerges near the harbor.

Albert Memorial Clock Tower

There are several places in Belfast that are unquestionably associated with the city. Another is the Albert Memorial Clock Tower, a historic clock, a memorial to the late Queen Victoria’s Prince Albert. The clock vaguely resembles Big Ben, and some say it’s a combination of the clock tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Why? Because the structure is tilted on all sides. The foundations were made of wood, or more precisely: they used wooden piles on swampy soil and we have this effect.

Belfast City Hall

Another of the city’ landmarks is Belfast City Hall. Located in Donegall Square, the building was designed in the Baroque Revival style. It can also be toured inside; unfortunately, on the date I was there, this was not possible. However, if you are going to Belfast, be sure not to miss this attraction – google the photos of the interior, they are simply amazing! Interestingly, in summer you can see locals and tourists lounging on the lawn in front of the building. The place is good for a coffee and a rest while sightseeing.

St. George Market

St. George’s Market was built between 1890 and 1896 and is still popular today. When you visit the market, you will see different stalls. For example, on Fridays at the market you can buy mostly fruits, vegetables and fresh fish – food that we can prepared at home. On Saturdays there are many more stands with prepared food, local dishes or products from around the world. That’s why it’s worth going there for breakfast or lunch on Saturday. The Sunday market in Belfast is all about local arts and crafts. In my opinion, St. George’s Market is one of Belfast’s attractions that is most definitely worth to go.

Titanic Belfast – Titanic Museum in Belfast

What is Belfast famous for? Of course, for the Titanic. No wonder, after all, the history of the famous ship began there, as the Titanic was built in Belfast. That’s why the Titanic Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Belfast.

Opened in 2012, the museum is housed in a building shaped like the prows of a ship. Inside you will see 9 galleries on 4 floors. It’s a huge museum and you’ll see more than just movies or old photographs. Titanic Belfast is also a history of the shipyard and the people who worked there. You learn about how life was in Belfast, what the professions were at the time, the public mood.

Belfast got rich by building ships of higher standards. More than eight million Europeans immigrated to North America in the first decade of the 20th century. New York was the main gateway to a new life. Most of the emigrants searched for a better quality of life. Poverty, lack of land, as well as new opportunities were reasons behind decision to leave. Letters to relatives painted a bright future. North America welcomed immigrants as skilled workers or farmers, depending on the destination. People were free to practice their religious and political beliefs, which was not so easy in Europe those times.

Visiting the Titanic Museum in Belfast is an amazing experience. There you can see how the ship was built, who sailed it, how the cabins looked like. You learn the stories of the travelers.

This is when the great emigrations began: you can see from where (and to where) the ships left, what it was like at the time. At the end of the tour you can discover how many people survived (their names, or see what nationality they were). Be sure to see the live broadcast from the place where the wreck rests on the ocean floor.

The Titanic Museum is definitely an attraction that one must check out!

Pricing

Standard admission to Titanic Belfast includes entrance to the SS Nomadic.

Adult £21.50

Child (5-15) £10.00

Child (up to 5 years old) Free

Family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) £53.00

SS Nomadic

After visiting the Titanic, it’s worth going to the SS Nomadic ship. The SS Nomadic was built by Harland & Wolff in 1911 (it is the oldest ship they built that has survived). This small ship carried passengers from the port of Cherbourg to the Titanic ship. Titanic, due to its size, had to be moored far from shore. SS Nomadic served first and second class passengers. The ship’s old equipment is on display, the exhibition is an interesting addition to a visit to the Titanic Museum. Inside, you can see some of the stories of those who sailed on the Titanic (both those who survived and those who were swallowed up by the depths of the ocean). The exhibition, compared to the Titanic Museum, is admittedly small, but in my opinion it’s a pity to let it go while you’re there. The ticket for this ship is included in the price of the museum tour, and the SS Nomadic is located maybe 100 meters away.

The Troubles – Part of the History of Belfast

The Troubles. It is impossible to tell the story of Belfast without telling the story of the Troubles. The Troubles is a very innocent name for what happened in Belfast (and Northern Ireland) for 30 years. Some call it a conflict between the Irish and the British. Others, the religious war between Protestants and Catholics. More than 3,500 people were killed over the years, many civilians (nearly 2,000 people).

Irish republicans were for the unification of Northern Ireland with Ireland, while Ulster loyalists were for Northern Ireland to be part of the United Kingdom. Trouble continued in the 1960s until 1998. That’s when the Good Friday Agreement was signed in Belfast.

Peace Wall – The Wall Between Neighborhoods

What historical sites are worth seeing when following the history of the Troubles? First of all, the walls called “Walls of Peace”. Walls were separating one community from another. Covered with murals, paintings that tell a difficult story. For example, on Falls and Shankill Road. I know it can be hard to distinguish one community from another at first glance, but it is worth noting the inscriptions and flags that are on the streets. Can you see the flag of the United Kingdom or Ireland? Or are there placards in an unfamiliar language (Irish)? On the Irish side, it is also common to see flags of Palestine.

It is definitely worth taking a guided tour, which will tell the history of the country and the city. This is something I didn’t manage to do in Belfast, but I did in Derry/Londonderry. A thing I highly recommend. In fact, the locals will tell you the most about the history of the city and Northern Ireland. You’ll learn firsthand about the political and religious divisions that led to the conflict, and what people who were wronged by the Troubles are saying and feeling today. Black Taxis are the most popular (cost from £40), but there are other (cheaper) ways to explore the city.

What other places are associated with the history of the Troubles? For example, the Europa Hotel. This four-star hotel is known as “the most bombed hotel in the world”. It went through 36 bomb attacks just during the Troubles.

Murals in Belfast

If you come to Belfast, you will immediately notice that its walls are covered with works of art! Belfast is definitely a city of murals. As I mentioned, they tell the story of this city and country, but this is not their only function. The murals in Belfast simply decorate this city. It’s no wonder that this is where Ireland’s largest street art festival has been held for the past 10 years. I managed to see one of the murals being created and I sincerely recommend it! This year more than 50 artists from around the world created new murals on Kent Street and Union Street, among others.

Events in Belfast

There are many of fests or events in Belfast. In May it was Festival of Fools and CAQF’s Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival. Concerts, circus events and many other attractions, most of which were available free of charge. In addition, as I wrote, there was a street art festival, so before you arrive, check out what events will take place during your stay in Belfast.

You can also visit (free entrance):

The MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre)

The Black Box & Green Room

Oh Yeah Music Centre

Where to Eat in Belfast?

There are many places to eat in Belfast. The previously mentioned St. George Market – I had a delicious sandwich there with good coffee from a local coffee roaster. Other than that, I have some recommendations for you:

Coppi – for an evening dinner in a pleasant atmosphere.

Manny’s Fish and Chips – traditional fish and French fries at a good price.

How to Find the Flavors of the City?

During our stay in Belfast, we took part in a food trail tour. It was a really cool experience! The tour lasted 4 hours and we managed to taste a lot of tasty things: sandwiches, cakes, drinks (including alcoholic ones?). You can find more about it here: https://tasteandtour.co.uk/

In addition to lunches and beverages, we tried local cheeses and a farmer’s food.

Pubs in Belfast

There are really a lot of typical pubs in Belfast. I’ve been in three, and in most you can also eat small snack (such as Meat Muffins).

The Garrick – here I tried a good Irish cider.

Deer’s head – they have their own beer production, I recommend it!

At The National Grande Cafe for an Irish gin.

There are many more, quite a few places with live music, such as Bert’s Jazz Bar, Dark Horse, The Dirty Onion and The Thirsty Goat Belfast.

Accommodation in Belfast – Where to Sleep?

Places to stay in Belfast are quite plentiful – from hostels to apartments to hotels. We stayed at the Malmaison Hotel on Victoria Street. This place is practically in the heart of Belfast, and the interior of the hotel was inspired by Belfast’s most famous ship, the Titanic. It’s beautiful inside, and the beds are incredibly comfortable! Breakfasts are really tasty, there is also a vegetarian version of Irish fry!

You can check out hotels in Belfast, including Malmaison here (link).

Belfast Attractions: What’s More?

These are not the only attractions of Belfast. There are a few places I didn’t manage to visit, but on my next visit I’d love to do this, such as:

Belfast Botanical Garden,

the building that used to be the old Crumlin Prison (Crumlin Road Gaol),

Belfast Castle,

Ulster Museum.

If you have already been to Belfast, I’m curious what places did you visit? I look forward to your comments!

Londonderry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland, located just over the Irish border. Derry means “oak grove.” The name comes from the Irish name “Doire,” which is why you can still see oak trees growing in many places. The city is located on the Foyle River and has a population of about 85,000.

It is also a city with two names. Derry-Londonderry. It’s easiest to use two names at the same time. Why? Well, so as not to offend someone. For Derry is the name used most often by Catholics and in Ireland. Londonderry is the name given by the British, the protestants. Even though any years have passed, some people are still irritated by these sensitive issues. Besides, Derry is the only walled city in Ireland (preserved completely).

These are not the only things Derry-Londonderry is associated with. The city is infamously known for the Troubles, or more precisely, Bloody Sunday. Indeed, it is impossible to tell the history of Derry, or even of Northern Ireland, without telling the story of the Troubles. However, I will start typically, with the city’s attractions, moving on to its history.

Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Derry-Londonderry

What is worth seeing in Derry? There are several attractions in this city, the most popular being the historic walls, about 1.5 km long, which form a walkway around the historic center of the city. The city walls in Londonderry were built between 1613 and 1618 by the Honorable Irish Society. Today from them you can see the original layout of the city.

Another interesting place is Guidehall or Londonderry Town Hall. The history of the place is connected with the British, as it was they who erected this unusual building. It is worth going inside (entrance is free) and learning more about the history of the city. First of all, the beautiful stained-glass windows catch the eye in this place. To be honest, without checking the map, I was convinced it was a church!

Another attraction in Derry would be the city’s museums. I had a Derry Pass city card and visited the Free Derry Museum and the Tower Museum, but these are not all of Derry’s museums, there is also, for example, the Siege Museum. What I learned at the museum I write about later on.

As usual, the most interesting things are found in hidden places. Such a place is the Craft Village. It is simply a reconstruction of an 18th-century street and a 19th-century square. There are stores where you can buy interesting, unique gifts, as well as restaurants and cafes, perfect for breakfast or coffee with locally baked pastries. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful place in the whole city!

Londonderry – What to See?

Let’s take a walk across the Peace Bridge. The Peace Bridge in Londonderry is a connection between the city center and the newly built Ebrington Square. The bridge connects the city for pedestrians and cyclists, and cannot be crossed by car. Interestingly, it was specially designed so that when you look at the bridge from the shore, you see a peace sign (V).

If you cross the Peace Bridge, it’s worth going to St Columb’s Park. It is, in the opinion of many, the most beautiful park in the city, and you can enjoy a cup of coffee or see squirrels in it (gray, like most on the island). There are, of course, the oak trees for which Derry is famous.

Back on the other side of the Folye River, walking through the streets of the city, our attention is caught by a sign YOU ARE NOW ENTERING A FREE DERRY. This slogan was first painted in January 1969, just after a late-night raid by British police in the Catholic Bogside neighborhood (you can read more about the city’s history below). In some places one can sense the nostalgia written on the murals and individual buildings. Or at least that was my impression.

While we’re on the theme of murals, the popular series “Derry Girls” was filmed here. There is a mural of “Derry Girls” in one of the streets. If you don’t know it, there are currently two seasons available on Netflix, with a third season coming soon. The series is set in the 90s, we watch the reality presented in a rather comedic way. In my opinion, it is worth seeing, ordinary, everyday life is intertwined with the Troubles. This is a series that tells the story in a light-hearted way. For example, in the first episode, when a bomb is planted on a bridge in Derry, the girls complain that they won’t go to school. And as I’ve started talking about the story I’ll move on to the next topic. To the Troubles.

The Troubles in Northern Ireland – a Brief Introduction

The Troubles is a very innocent name for what happened in this country from the 1960s until 1998. However, to understand the history of the Troubles, it is worth starting with a visit to the Tower Museum Derry. There you’ll find a really interesting exhibition telling the story of the city and Northern Ireland. You will also learn more about the genesis of the Troubles.

What was the Troubles? Some call it a conflict between the Irish and the British. Others a religious war between Protestants and Catholics. Over the years more than 3,500 people were killed, many civilians (nearly 2,000 people). Irish republicans were for the unification of Northern Ireland with Ireland, while Ulster loyalists wanted for Northern Ireland to be part of the United Kingdom. The Troubles continued until 1998, at which time the Good Friday Agreement was signed in Belfast. After that the aggression began to cease.

The troubles in Northern Ireland are a very complex topic. Most often people speak about 30 years of conflict, but in fact it all started hundreds of years earlier, when Scots and English arrived in Northern Ireland, at the invitation of the British Crown. This period is called the Settlement. So in the 16th century the new inhabitants got land, many rights that the old inhabitants of the island did not have.

In 1921 Ireland gained independence from Great Britain, while part of the island, more precisely the part that makes up today’s Northern Ireland, was still under the crown’s sovereignty. After World War II the nationalist movement intensified, especially since in 1968 the Irish still did not have the full rights that should have been in place at the time. For example, in order to vote in local elections in Northern Ireland, one had to be a homeowner, most of whom were middle- and upper-class Protestants. Many British people were business owners, which gave them additional votes. So in Derry, where there were many more Catholics, unrest began to grow. They fought for the “one man, one vote” law.

Free Derry Museum – Free Derry Museum

The Free Derry Museum focuses on the civil rights era of the 1960s, the early problems of the 1970s. It tells the story of Bloody Sunday in a very detailed way. As the museum proclaims: this museum is dedicated to all those around the world who fought and suffered for civil rights and who will do so in the future.

During the 1970s peaceful marches were increasingly organized, and there were tensions and clashes between Catholics and Protestants. The British government tried to quell the protests by issuing a decree banning the marches. In addition, there was a new law allowing authorities to intern any person suspected of terrorism. This is how Bloody Sunday happened, or more precisely, the peaceful march in Derry. At the time the authorities allowed the march to pass through the city’s Catholic neighborhoods. Instead, they will not allow demonstrators to reach the city hall.

Bloody Sunday in Derry

On that day 14 unarmed demonstrators were killed and 17 wounded. The British Army fired 108 bullets. The British Army said it had killed the thugs. They said the soldiers were the ones attacked earlier, although no soldier or vehicle was hit. To confirm its story, bombs were planted on one victim. A few hours after the shooting ended, the world heard the British story. It became the government’s official version, a version that would not be officially denied for 38 years. It was only in 2010, after years of research, that the British were found guilty.

Although the people of Derry knew it was a lie, no one listened to them. It wasn’t just adults who died on Bloody Sunday. Six were under the age of 18. The country plunged into conflict. During the darkest days, bombings, riots (both from one side and the other) were everyday routine.

For many years social divisions and conflict grew, until April 10, 1998, when the Good Friday Agreement was signed. This is a peaceful agreement between Northern Ireland’s major parties and the British government.

It is actually a small part of the history of Northern Ireland and the city of Derry-Londonderry. There were still incidents of violence after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, but they were far fewer. Now Boris Johnson, along with the government, is proposing to extend amnesty to all acts committed before the agreement (those committed for political motives).

Derry Tour Idea

How to explore Londonderry? An interesting idea is to take a guided tour, which will tell you about the history and show you tasty places. We went on such a tour with Far and Wild. More precisely, we went on a bicycle tour. We biked several kilometers around the most historical city in the northwest of Ireland. Not only the guide told us a lot, but we asked all sorts of the most bizarre questions that came to mind. What can you see on such a tour? Much depends on what you are interested in, there can be the basics of the city’s history, there can be legends, there can be the trail of the series and the popular locations of “Derry Girls”. Our tour lasted about three hours, and I can say that my trip to Londonderry would have been incomplete without it.

Derry reminded me a bit of Lodz in Poland. There were many tailor shops here as well. In the picture – a mural commemorating the old days.

Accommodation. Where to Sleep in Derry?

There are plenty of hotels and places to stay. We spent the nights in the heart of the cathedral district, at the Bishop’s Gate Hotel. Located inside the historic city walls, it is atmospheric and carefully restored. This hotel was built in 1899. It still presents interesting Edwardian architecture, both in the furnishings and in the atmosphere of the place. I highly recommend it, plus they serve tasty breakfasts ?.

Derry – Where to Eat? Restaurants and Places with Tasty Food

Breakfast at Bishop’s Gate Hotel are really good and filling. Besides, you should know that every year in late April and early May the city hosts a jazz festival. We were there on the last day of the festival and I’ll admit that there’s plenty to listen to, but it was also hard to find a seat in the venues we chose. Some due to the bank holiday (early May) were closed.

That’s why we ate twice at a local knack called Pyke ‘N’ Pommes. They have good burgers and snacks. Plus, of course, a pint of beer! An iconic and recommended place for dinner is Walled City Brewery.

Other than that, I recommend the pastry and coffee at the previously mentioned Craft Village. This thatched-roof building has really good baked goods (made on site).

What to see in Northern Ireland? What places and attractions are breathtaking? Does it actually “just rain” there? In this post I will discuss how to organize a trip to Northern Ireland, how much time to spend there and how to prepare for a journey.

Let me start with the basics: Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. This means that we need to take pounds or a multi-currency card with us. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast, and its second largest city is Derry-Londonderry. The country is home to more than 2 million sheep and just under 2 million people. In a pub we order a pint of beer, and the metrics are yards, feet and miles.

Northern Ireland for a vacation is a rather unusual choice, or at least that’s what you’ve written to me in the messages. This makes it a very good destination for travel, because many places will not be trampled by tourists, and there are really a lot of places to see in this country. In my opinion, the best time to visit Northern Ireland is spring and summer, when you can admire the beautiful green countryside and enjoy your time outdoors.

Let’s start exploring – you can find Northern Ireland’s most beautiful attractions below!

Attractions of Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is a beautiful country. I’ll start by saying that it’s really green, and you’ll see that on the photos. There are world popular spots such as the Giant’s Causeway, the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, the Titanic museum (it was built in Belfast), and many other places. There are really plenty of attractions to visit in Northern Ireland although it’s a small country. There are quite a few places for both first-time visitors and those who have been to Northern Ireland many times. In this post I’ll focus on the attractions between Belfast and Derry-Londondery, we’ll take the Causeway Coastal Route, where there are many amazing spots. Northern Ireland is a country, in which you can fall in love at first sight!

Belfast – the Capital of Northern Ireland

Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It is inhabited by more than 300,000 people, is one of the oldest cities in Ireland, and has a really rich history. There are many historical monuments where one can learn more about the city and the country. It’s a great city with many attractions and places to visit.

For example, there are several amazing museums, including the Ulster Museum and Titanic Belfast. It’s worth walking around the city with a guide. We madethe Beflast food trail tour and it was really fun! The city also has many festivals throughout the year, so there is always something going on. Also, while you’re in Belfast, it’s recommended to learn more about the Irish Troubles, or the Northern Ireland Conflict that took place in the 1970s. A sad story, but definitely worth learning about.

Titanic Belfast

The Titanic Museum is one of the most popular places in Belfast. No wonder, after all, this is where the story of the famous ship began. In this museum you will see not only videos or photographs. Titanic Belfast is the real story of the ship, the shipyard and the people who worked there.

Visiting Titanic Belfast, it is worth noting that this is the time when the great emigrations began. You can see where the ships departed from, what it was like, and at the end of the tour discover how many people survived (their names, or what nationality they were). Interestingly, the shape of the museum refers to the ship. After visiting the Titanic, I recommend going to the SS Nomadic ship (it is located around 200 meters away), where you can learn even more history.

Causeway Coastal Route – Route Along the North Coast

If you are going to Northern Ireland, I think it’s good to rent a car and do the route along the northern coast. The Causeway Coastal Route is one of the most beautiful roads in the country, perhaps the most beautiful. On one side we have the blue ocean, on the other the green meadows. Along the way there are really a lot of attractions to stop at (you can find some of them in this post).

I would add that the weather in Ireland is changeable. During one day we could take photos in full sun, with light clouds or strong clouds cover. An interesting experience, thanks to which we took hundreds of interesting photos.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Northern Ireland? A week on the long May weekend cost about £300. This was at Enterprise rental company, so I suspect it may be even cheaper.

Let me start by saying that about 70% of the famous series was filmed in Northern Ireland. For this reason, in 2022 an unusual attraction was created just 40 minutes away from Belfast – a Game of Thrones studio! 30-40% of the series was filmed in this studio and there are authentic scenes and film backgrounds. You will see not only scenes or costumes and accessories, but also sketches, themes and plans for the making of the series. An amazing place that shows the enormity of this project. On site we visit all the lands from GOT, and the farther we go, the warmer it gets. Fans of the series will probably know why ?.

Address: 245 Castlewellan Road, Banbridge BT32 3SG. Important! We park at the shopping center, pick up our tickets there and go by bus to the studio.

Tollymore Forest Park

If you are in the Newcastle area, be sure to visit this place. Tollymore Forest Park is a lovely park on the east coast of Northern Ireland. It is primarily famous for its beautiful trails and charming bridges, which have taken part in various film productions. However, it is mainly a lovely arboretum, which was established in 1752. There you will find a variety of tree species from different parts of the world, including the famous Himalayan cedars.

Parking, as at other National Trust sites, costs £5.

The Gobbins Cliffpath Walk

If I had to recommend the most amazing experience in Northern Ireland, it would be the Gobbins path. The name “The Gobbins” comes from the Irish name “An Gobain” which means “points of rock,” and indeed, let’s walk along the cliff. The Gobbins is a dramatic cliff path that includes bridges, tunnels and a very large number of stairs! We climb into the rock, climbing farther and farther. It’s definitely a unique experience: this coastal route, was first opened in 1902. Since August 2015, we have been walking along a new, much safer route.

The place is extraordinary, and very well protected. What’s interesting, even people with a fear of heights (like me) felt safe there. The route takes about 3 hours.

Price: £20/adult.

Giant’s Causeway – Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that were formed by volcanic activity 60 million years ago. A remarkable place, a true wonder of nature that was created without human intervention. No wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts tourists from all over the world who want to see it up close!

Various legends are associated with this remarkable place, which will appeal especially to younger tourists. You will see the characteristic formations of the camel, chairs and harps!

Note that there are different options for visiting the Causeway. The first – buying a ticket and parking at the visitor center. For £13 there we get a guide in different languages and a map. The second – parking in another parking area, also usually paid (in May 2022 it was £3).

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge is an iconic attraction in Northern Ireland. If you look at the photo, you’ll know that “you’ve seen it somewhere before.” The bridge is located on the northern coast of Northern Ireland, and interestingly enough, it did not originate as a tourist bridge. Its history is much older, as it was built to facilitate salmon fishing in the area. It was built by fishermen as a passage to allow access to nets and other equipment on the other side of the gorge.

The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge connects two cliffs over a deep gorge. Its length is 20 meters, and it was suspended almost 30 meters above the sea. Bridge connects the mainland with a tiny island called Carrickarede. Its view is impressive and crossing the bridge is an amazing experience, unfortunately, it was recently closed. Nevertheless, it’s worth a trip to experience the natural beauty, enjoy the scenery and get closer to the sea.

Admission: parking £5, entrance to the bridge currently unavailable (May 2022).

Cushendun Caves

I mentioned earlier that Game of Thrones was filmed in Northern Ireland. The Cushendun Caves are one of the locations featured in the series. The caves were formed more than 400 million years ago and are mysterious, interesting and incredibly photogenic in their own right. I say this because you may think that this place is only for fans of the series, and in my opinion, it is worth seeing because of the fact that they are simply beautiful.

Admission: free (May 2022).

Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland

Another spot popular for visiting is Dunluce Castle, or rather its ruins. Dunluce Castle is located on the edge of a cliff, with a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. This medieval castle has a very long history, more precisely, its history dates back to the Viking Age.

Other famous castles in Northern Ireland include Carrickfergus and the further mentioned Demesne Castle.

Glenariff Forest Park – There You Will See the Most Beautiful Waterfalls!

There are quite a few waterfalls in Northern Ireland. Passing through the coast near White Beach, you can see several streams, flowing down steep cliffs. Waterfalls can also be found in the central part of the country, hidden in forests.

The most popular and famous for its waterfalls is Glenariff Forest Park. It is located a bit away from the coast, so when doing the northern route along the ocean, you have to go slightly off the road. Spectacular waterfalls are a characteristic feature of this park. The park is crossed by two small rivers. It is the Inver and Glenariff that create the waterfalls and stretches of fast-flowing water that rushes through rocky gorges with steep slopes! The route along the waterfalls is beautiful and scenic. One of the most spectacular places we saw in Northern Ireland.

Parking: £5 (May 2022).

Fair Head – Unusual Irish cliffs

This is one of the places you must visit while in Northern Ireland. The Fair Head cliff stretches for 5 kilometers and is truly phenomenal. Located right next to Ballycastle, a small village on the northeastern “corner” of the island of Ireland – this is where we had a hotel booked and took a break on the Causeway Coastal Route. Fair Head is a great backdrop for photos, and the nearby rocks are perfect for a small picnic. I might also add that it’s where Game of Thrones was filmed (yes, again!).

The cliff is also high, its height reaching 100 meters. It is considered one of the best climbing areas in Ireland, and during our stay we had the opportunity to watch climbers. Definitely, it is impressive.

Parking: £3.

Derry-Londonderry

This unusual town in Northern Ireland attracts visitors for several reasons. First, it’s a completely wall-surrounded city, the only one in Ireland. Second, there is plenty to explore here. Third, this is where much of the country’s sad history and Bloody Sunday took place.

If you’re going to Northern Ireland, I think it’s worth learning about its history, which unfortunately was really difficult for the residents for many years.

Demesne Castle and Mussenden Temple

Demesne is another great place in Northern Ireland. Mussenden Temple and Downhill Castle are phenomenally located , on top of a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean. From the cliff the view of the beach is spectacular. The place is great for hiking and scenic walks. I recommend starting the route at Bishops Gate, and that’s where we parked the car. Why exactly there? The park is beautiful, and the blooming bluebells and bear garlic on the long stretches make it seem like a place from a fairy tale. The trail takes a few dozen minutes one way, and at the end it is worth going down or downhill to Downhill Beach.

An interesting fact! Musseden Temple is another beautiful place that was featured in Game of Thrones.

Beaches in Northern Ireland

There are many great sandy beaches in Northern Ireland. They weren’t the focus of my trip, but I was able to save a few places as ones I would love to return to, such as the previously mentioned Downhill beach, Castlerock beach and Whiterocks beach. Beautiful places and great for a picnic or afternoon coffee/tea with something sweet. Besides, from the cliffs the beaches look simply fantastic.

Accommodation in Northern Ireland

If you are going to Northern Ireland, you are probably waiting for my accommodation recommendations. This time we slept in hotels that served a good breakfast. For a week, we stayed at:

Malmaison Hotel on Victoria Street in Belfast – a hotel inspired by Belfast’s most famous ship, the Titanic. Beautiful, and the beds are incredibly comfortable!

Salthouse Hotel in Ballycastle (a break from the Causeway Coastal Route tour). Beautiful eco hotel with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean!

Bishops Gate Hotel in Derry – built in 1899, the hotel features stunning Edwardian architecture, carefully restored rooms and furnishings

Sightseeing in Northern Ireland – What’s Good to Know?

At the end of this blog post, I will briefly write about the weather. It is sometimes said that it “rains all the time” in the Northern Ireland. We were there in late April and early May and the weather was very changeable, but there was really a lot of sunshine. If you are wondering how to dress or pack, I can say one thing: dress in layers!

When the sun comes out, it’s really warm (the felt temperature is higher than on the thermometer), when it’s cloudy, it’s better to have an autumn jacket with you (I wore a fleece + vest).

This is one of the posts about the attractions of Northern Ireland. The aforementioned points are just the beginning of the tour – you can find more places in the category. And if you want to know something special, I look forward to your messages and suggestions.

And if you have already been to Northern Ireland, I look forward to your recommendations. I’d love to fly there again to discover what I haven’t seen!

I discovered Northern Ireland upon the invitation of Tourism Ireland. Thanks to you I was able to see how beautiful a country it is. Thank you!

“Game of Thrones” is a series that had been filmed for nearly a decade. This series has captured the imagination of fans, and although it is set on fictional continents, the filming locations of each episode are well known.

About 70% of the series was shot in Northern Ireland, both outdoors and in film studios. No wonder the popularity of the “Game of Thrones” series has led to an increase in tourism in Northern Ireland, with many fans coming from abroad to visit the locations where scenes are filmed.

What places are worth visiting when following the “Game of Thrones” trail in Northern Ireland? We will follow Ned Stark, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Cersei Lannister and other characters in Northern Ireland.

Map of “Game of Thrones” Locations in Northern Ireland

Probably the most important, because without an itinerary you can’t go. I have prepared a map for you to help you find your way around, map out your routes and enjoy your trip. On the map you will find interesting places and points of “Game of Thrones”, which I list in this post.

You can add it to the Google Maps app, just access the site via your phone, click on the map zoom [ ] in the upper right corner and it will automatically launch the app with the map below.

Personally, I have heard of 25 “Game of Thrones” locations in Northern Ireland. The most famous of these are Tollymore Forest Park, The Dark Hedges. Some of them, unfortunately, I didn’t manage to see. I saw more than a dozen locations during my trip, but on the map below you will find all the ones I managed to find.

“Game of Thrones” Studio – Linen Mill Studios

The show was filmed in a number of locations, and as I mentioned, about 70% of the series was shot in Northern Ireland. For this reason, in 2022, 40 minutes from Belfast, an unusual attraction was created – a “Game of Thrones” studio! Around 30-40% of the series was shot in this studio and there are authentic scenes and film backgrounds. You will not only see scenes or costumes and accessories, but also sketches, themes and plans for the making of the series. You can ask about interesting facts from the guides, who know practically everything about the series (e.g. which parts of Britain were on the continent of Westeros)

In the studio, you explore all the lands from GOT, and the deeper you go, the warmer it gets. You simply explore the studio from the Wall, from the ice all the way to desert Dorne in the south. An amazing site that shows the enormity of this project.

“Game of Thrones” studio address: 245 Castlewellan Road, Banbridge BT32 3SG. Important! You park at the shopping center, pick up your tickets there and take a small bus to the studio. Admission: £40, tour time min. 3 hours (that’s how long it took us, and to be honest there was still something to see). If you’re going as a family, the kids (at least for now) don’t have to pay extra.

Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest Park is a charming park on the east coast of Northern Ireland (near Newcastle), so it’s well worth a drive to after visiting the “Game of Thrones” studios. It is primarily known for its beautiful trails and charming bridges, which have taken part in various film productions. Among them, in “Game of Thrones”. It is also a beautiful arboretum, which was established in 1752. A variety of plant species can be found here, including the famous Himalayan cedars. No wonder the place made an appearance in the series.

A moment from “Game of Thrones”: it was there that the Starks first met the little Wolfsons. Season 1, Episode 1.

“Game of Thrones” Filming Location: Cushendun Caves

The Cushendun Caves are another location featured in “Game of Thrones”. These caves were formed more than 400 million years ago and are mysterious, interesting and incredibly photo-geeky in their own right. It’s no wonder that one of the scenes of GOT took place there. Even if you are not a fan of the series, in my opinion, they are worth seeing due to the fact that they are simply beautiful.

A moment from “Game of Thrones”: the creation of a shadow by Melisandre, the Red Woman. Season 2, episode 4.

Fair Head – Unusual Irish Cliffs

This is one of the places I think you have to visit in Northern Ireland, not only because of the series. The Fair Head cliff stretches for 5 kilometers and is truly phenomenal.

Of course, it’s where “Game of Thrones” was filmed, more specifically, the scene in which Jon Snow looks from Fairhead to the ocean. Season 7, episode 3.

Parking lot: £3.

Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland

Another spot popular with tourists is Dunluce Castle, or rather its ruins. Nevertheless, it’s worth knowing that you may not recognize Dunluce Castle as the filming location of the TV series, as it has been quite heavily remodeled for its purposes. Nevertheless, still Dunluce Castle is located on the edge of a cliff, with a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Dark Hedges – the Famous Tree-lined Path of King’s Road

This is probably the most photographed spot from “Game of Thrones” in Northern Ireland. No wonder, it is extremely photogenic. Unless a couple of buses with tourists from all over the world just happen to arrive (that’s how it happened to us, unfortunately) ?. I’d say it’s a great place to visit.

This distinctive beech avenue from the TV series “Game of Thrones” appears at the end of episode one in season two.

Mussenden Temple/Downhill Strand

This is another great place for a “Game of Thrones” walking tour of Northern Ireland. Mussenden Temple is located on top of a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean. From the cliff, there is a beautiful view of the beach, which is famous in the series.

The beach appeared in the second season, when Stannis Baratheon rejected the gods of Westeros and was declared Lord of Light.

Larrybane Quarry

Larrybane Bay is one of the more scenic spots on the Causeway coast (the famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge is right next door). From the cliffs above the bay you can admire the coast. The quarry located there was the scene for one of the episodes of season 2. Catelyn Stark meets the new king, Renly.

Mount Binevenagh

The mountain, or rather the plateau of Binevenagh, is located in County Londonderry. The view from the top is really stunning, and besides, the place attracts anglers, because there is an artificial lake there. It’s worth knowing that at certain times (e.g., when I was there ?) it’s incredibly wet there, so it’s better to have spare pair of shoes.

Mount Binevenagh appears in season 5, episode 10.

Glenariff Forest Park Glenariff Forest Park, or rather, the Hidden Village of Galboly

Located between ravines, the hidden village is another location from the series. Some sources say that some of the scenes took place in the nearby Glenariff Park, which I think is worth a visit for its spectacular scenery.

On the other hand, the road to the village takes about 20 minutes, we failed twice, not because of the long or demanding route. Once the parking space (for several cars) was full, and the second time we walked up a bit and had to rush to the airport. Maybe it will work out the third time, I hope so.

Other “Game of Thrones” Sites in Northern Ireland

Of course, these are not all “Game of Thrones” sites. There are a few more places in Northern Ireland, in County Dawn, County Antrim and County Derry/Londonderry:

Castle Ward

Inch Abbey

Sallagh Braes

Slemish Mountain

Shillanavogy Valley

Pollnagollum Cave

Places from “Game of Thrones” – What to Know?

First of all, it’s worth to plan the route carefully. If you have limited time, as I did, it’s worth giving up some points. In my opinion, Mount Binevenagh was the least interesting place and I would swap it for a hidden village or Inch Abbey.

Are these all the “Game of Thrones” locations in Northern Ireland? Still no. In Belfast, for example, there are beautiful stained glass windows that you can see when visiting the city. Besides, 10 wooden doors that memorialize “Game of Thrones” have been hidden throughout Northern Ireland. They are made from fallen trees in the Dark Hedges and depict some of the moments of season 6 episodes. Where are they located? I’ll just reveal that the latest ones are located in the Belfast pub Dark Horse.
