As you may already know, this year I was enchanted by Romania. Arad is a city that holds a prominent place in the western part of Romania. Situated on the Mures River in the Krishan and Banat region, it serves as the capital of the Arad district.

The city offers a plethora of attractions, monuments, and a captivating atmosphere that is bound to delight any tourist. You can explore numerous museums, take leisurely strolls through the city, and visit various architecturally fascinating churches. If you’re eager to uncover the secrets of Romania and become acquainted with Arad, I extend an invitation to you to visit!

Holy Trinity Cathedral

This Orthodox cathedral was constructed between 1994 and 2018 and was designed by Ioan Hăprian. The cornerstone for its construction was laid by Archbishop Timothy in November 1991. It currently serves as the primary cathedral of the city’s bishopric. The cathedral is a remarkable edifice characterized by distinctive domes and a lavishly adorned interior that is unquestionably worth visiting.

Arad City Hall

One of the standout attractions in Arad is the Administrative Palace, a historical gem dating back to the 19th century. It is often referred to as an architectural marvel. Construction of this remarkable structure commenced in 1872 and was completed over a span of four years. The visionaries behind the city hall project aimed for the main administrative edifice to occupy a central position in the city.

Interestingly, the current location of the Administrative Palace was previously occupied by the city’s salt mine. After the palace’s construction, the area underwent significant transformation. Numerous renovations took place in its vicinity, and the city’s tramway system was revamped. This represented a significant milestone in Arad’s evolution, allowing the city to keep pace with other rapidly modernizing European metropolises.

Today, the Administrative Palace continues to captivate tourists with its impressive facade, tower, and eclectic architectural style, which blends classical elements. Undoubtedly, it rightfully earns its status as a prominent landmark of the city.

Red Church

The Red Church, as you might have guessed, derives its name from the red polished brick finish on its facade. This building holds historical and architectural significance, serving as a place of worship for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Romania.

Constructed in 1906 in the Gothic style, the Red Church is a striking architectural marvel, boasting towering spires, with the tallest one reaching a height of 46 meters. The Gothic-style stained-glass windows here are also a sight to behold. Interestingly, the church originally housed three bells with a combined weight of 1590 kg. However, during World War I, two of them were removed and melted down to create artillery shells.

The Padlock House

The Padlock House is a historic structure, and on one of its corners, you will discover a recessed area housing an iron padlock. In the past, visiting craftsmen who came to the city to acquire the secrets of their trade would hammer a commemorative nail into this spot before departing the city. This building was originally constructed in 1815, and during the mid-19th century, an additional two floors were added to it. Over the years, its facade has also undergone various alterations.

Arad Fortress

This expansive fortress is situated on the left bank of the Mures River in the Subcetate district, which was once the location of the former military border between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire. Initially serving as a military garrison and prison, it has since 1999 been repurposed as the headquarters of the Mixed Romanian-Hungarian Battalion.

Pressure Tower

The 35-meter-high Pressure Tower in Arad was once a significant landmark on the city’s map. From 1896, it served as a crucial component of the water supply system and also functioned as a firefighter’s siren. Today, it houses a small museum dedicated to water, featuring thematic exhibitions. Additionally, you can observe a 400-ton water tank here, accessible via a ladder.

The exhibition space within the tower spans across five levels. It is certainly worth a visit due to its engaging exhibitions, including a permanent collection of artworks created by Arad painters. Moreover, you will gain insights into Arad’s firefighting traditions and discover how the city’s water supply was maintained over the decades.

Church of St. Anthony of Padua

 This church was designed by the local architect Milan Tabakovic and constructed between 1902 and 1904, replacing an earlier Baroque church that was demolished for this ambitious project.

The church showcases an eclectic architectural style, blending elements of Neoclassicism, Baroque, and Renaissance. The main entrance is graced by four imposing columns adorned with Corinthian capitals. Above this entrance, a replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta is prominently displayed.

The interior of the church boasts a nave measuring 43 meters in length and 17 meters in width. Within the dome, you’ll find bells that were cast in a local foundry. Positioned above the white marble altar is a painting depicting the church’s patron saint.

It’s noteworthy that the Church of St. Anthony of Padua has earned its place on the list of monuments recognized by the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs.

Ioana Slavici Classical Theater

The Ioana Slavici Classical Theater stands as another noteworthy landmark within the city, deserving a visit when you’re in the area. This three-story neoclassical building from the 19th century is dedicated to Ioan Slavici, one of Arad’s most celebrated Romanian writers and journalists.

Over the course of its existence, the theater has played host to a multitude of performances, enchanting and mesmerizing audiences from both Romania and across the globe. Throughout the years, this cultural institution has welcomed numerous celebrities. Among its early distinguished patrons were figures like Franz Joseph and Prince Albrecht, alongside many other notable princes, princesses, and aristocrats.

Arad Museum Complex

This expansive museum complex comprises three distinct museums: the archaeological-historical museum, the natural sciences museum, and the art museum. These museums are housed within the historic Palace of Culture in the city.

Collectively, the complex boasts a staggering collection of over 125,000 exhibits. In the archaeological and historical section, visitors can explore an array of artifacts, including tools, armor, documents, and flags meticulously arranged in chronological order. The exhibits span from the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, encompassing the cultures of the Dacians and Celts, the medieval era, and extending into the 19th century revolution and modern times.

Other exhibition halls within the complex showcase natural history collections that delve into topics such as the solar system, space exploration, mineral specimens, and paleontology. Additionally, a separate edifice houses the art collection, which features artworks created by European and Romanian artists spanning from the 16th to the 20th centuries. This museum complex is a treasure trove of knowledge and history, providing visitors with a rich and diverse cultural experience.

Palace of Culture

 The Palace of Culture stands as another prominent building in the city of Arad, constructed between 1911 and 1913. Today, the building houses the previously mentioned museum complex and the State Philharmonic Hall. If you find yourself in Arad, this place is sure to be on your list of must-visit attractions.

The architecture of the building seamlessly blends various styles. The neoclassical facade features intricate detailing, with a pediment supported by sturdy Corinthian pillars. At the pinnacle of the structure stands an imposing tower, while the side wings incorporate elements reminiscent of Italian Renaissance design. The main corridor is adorned in the Art Nouveau style, adding to the building’s overall architectural charm.

Serbian Orthodox Church

The Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Peter and St. Paul stands as one of the city’s oldest structures, dating back to its construction between 1698 and 1702. This church was raised by the Serbian community and is situated in Serbian Square. The funding for its construction was provided by Captain Iovan.

Within the temple, visitors can marvel at a collection of icons, which were meticulously painted by the artist Stefan Tenecki during the latter half of the 18th century. This historic church offers a glimpse into the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the Serbian community in the area.

If you’re in search of a great cup of coffee in Arad, I wholeheartedly recommend Cafein coffee place. This establishment serves up top-notch coffee, fragrant cappuccinos, and a diverse array of delectable desserts. The ambiance is inviting, the service is hospitable, and you can always count on freshly brewed coffee.

In Arad, like in many other cities across Romania, you’ll discover a range of accommodation choices tailored to your preferences and budget. Close to the city of Cluj-Napoca lies Cheile Turzii, one of the most picturesque reserves in the country. It serves as a haven for nature enthusiasts, trekkers, and climbers. The site beckons with breathtaking vistas, encompassing sheer cliffs, a meandering river, and intriguing caves. The Turda Gorge provides an optimal setting for strolls, picnics, and bird watching. Essentials of Cheile Turzii Nature Reserve 

Cheile Turzii is characterized by its unique karst topography. The gorge spans 324 hectares and is sculpted out of Jurassic limestone rocks eroded over time by the Hășdate River. The cliffs soar up to a staggering 200 meters. This region boasts over 1,000 distinct species of plants and animals, inclusive of numerous rare specimens. 

Traversing the Gorge 

Before delving into the route’s specifics, it’s pivotal to note that the path isn’t designed for strollers. Hence, if you’re considering a trip with an infant, this is a factor to consider. There are four bridges, unmodified for stroller accessibility, coupled with staircases. 

Our car was securely parked at a paid facility by Cheia Village. Our chosen trail encompassed both the left and right flanks of the Hășdate Valley, with us crossing the scenic bridges periodically. Intriguingly, each bridge has its moniker; for instance, the second one is dubbed “Middle of the Gorge.” The path also introduces you to quaint caves along the way. 

Spanning roughly 1,300 meters, the route isn’t particularly arduous. It’s important to highlight that there’s no cellular reception (given the deep ravine setting). You can trek up to the observation point at the gorge’s extremity and either double back or venture onto lesser-known trails. 

Did You Know? Climbers favor this locale due to its uncomplicated access to gear transportation. Over 200 climbing and mountaineering paths are available for exploration. 

Captivating Viewpoints – The Ideal Spots for Pictures 

Exquisite snapshots often result from a more distant perspective, notably from the Tirolian Cheile Turzii vantage point. Additionally, numerous such locations can be found along the 103G route. Particularly in the summer, with sunflowers in full bloom against the backdrop of the cliffs, the scene is simply mesmerizing.

A non-trivial choice for a vacation? Romania, and more specifically, Transylvania. Transylvania is one of those places that simply deserves a visit. I discovered it only this year when Maciek and I embarked on a car trip to Romania. I was (and still am) completely enchanted by what I witnessed there.

Before I delve into the description of these places, let me clarify that the region is known as both “Transylvania” and “Transylvania”. In the past, this area belonged to Hungary but is now part of Romanian territory.

In this post, I will share the gems of this region and highlight places that have left a lasting impression on me.

How long should I visit Transylvania?

This, I believe, is the most pressing question if you’re considering a trip to Romania. The country is vast, and given its mountainous terrain, traversing even short distances can be time-consuming. Transylvania, for instance, features both mountains and foothills. Mountainous landscapes predominantly occupy its eastern and southern parts. The highest regions of Transylvania are part of the Southern Carpathian Mountains, also referred to as the Transylvanian Alps. Some peaks in these mountains soar over 2,500 meters above sea level.

We spent a week in Transylvania, and I must admit that it was insufficient to explore everything on our list. However, this gives us a compelling reason to revisit, as Romania’s beauty is boundless.

Oradea

 My Romanian journey commenced in Oradea. Situated just 13 kilometers from the Hungarian border, it serves as an excellent launchpad for any trip. My Romanian friend Eddie believes it’s the most enchanting city in the entire country. The transformation Oradea has undergone in recent years is truly remarkable. While I anticipated beauty, the firsthand view of the city took me aback. Oradea boasts architecture that bears a slight resemblance to Barcelona, yet it’s devoid of the bustling crowds. Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca, often simply called Cluj, is one of Romania’s pivotal cities. It was the second destination on my Transylvanian journey. Although I spent several days there and found a lot to explore, when comparing cities in the region, I’d particularly recommend Timisoara. Cluj-Napoca also makes a great jump-off point for nearby attractions, some of which are detailed below.

Turda Salt Mine

The Turda Salt Mine stands out as a must-visit gem. While its contents may draw parallels with the Wieliczka mine, its ambiance is distinctively unique. Visitors have the freedom to navigate its extensive corridors, each revealing hidden wonders. Highlights include a chamber with remarkable acoustics and an awe-inspiring subterranean lake.

Cheile Turzii Gorge

 Not far from Cluj-Napoca lies Cheile Turzii, arguably one of Romania’s most scenic canyons. It’s a magnet for nature aficionados, trekkers, and rock-climbing enthusiasts. The gorge showcases awe-striking vistas: from towering cliffs and meandering rivers to its hidden caves. It’s an idyllic setting for walks, picnics, and birdwatching. The Cheile Turzii Gorge is a haven for various birds of prey, notably housing the regal peregrine falcons.

Tureni Gorge

 Less renowned but equally captivating, Tureni Gorge, also called Cheile Tureniului, boasts intriguing rock formations. It’s a sought-after spot for climbing aficionados. This serene nook offers a perfect setting for brief strolls and a welcome escape from urban commotion. Regrettably, our visit was cut short by a sudden thunderstorm, prompting a hasty retreat to our car.

Alba Iulia

The city’s historical epicenter is the Alba Carolina Citadel, a grandiose edifice commissioned by Charles VI, which once bore the name Karlsburg in his honor. This expansive fortress displays one of Europe’s most remarkable bastion systems, comprising seven star-shaped bastions. Nestled within the citadel’s walls are landmarks such as the renowned Coronation Cathedral. Meandering through the citadel reveals numerous monuments, paying tribute to eminent personalities from local history.

Hunedoara Castle – Corvinus Castle

 Corvinilor Castle, also referred to as Castelul Corvinilor, stands proudly in Transylvania’s heart, a region celebrated for its multitude of castles, including the iconic Dracula Castle. The name “Corvinilor Castle” alludes to a Hungarian king. This naming pays homage to an era when these territories were under Hungarian sovereignty. In my view, this castle is an essential visit in this Romanian region. For those acquainted with its grandeur, the awe it evokes is self-evident.

Maria Radna Sanctuary (Lipova)

Nestled by Romania’s Mureș River in the picturesque town of Lipova, this sanctuary is a prominent pilgrimage destination. Devotees from across the country, and even from Hungary, converge here to mark the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

This splendid compound, featuring a church and grand monastery edifices from the 18th and 19th centuries, stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and devout faith. Central to its significance is the Miraculous Icon portraying the Blessed Virgin Mary on Mount Carmel.

Șoimoș Castle (Lipova)

 A stone’s throw from Lipova stands the Șoimoș Castle, a medieval stronghold. Its founders strategically utilized the rugged terrains for bolstered defense against Tatars, Turks, and other assailants. While now primarily scenic ruins, ascending to the castle’s summit offers a spellbinding view of the Zarand Mountains and the river below.

Timisoara

 Often dubbed “Little Vienna”, Timișoara justifies this moniker splendidly. A walk through its lanes showcases an architectural tapestry ranging from Baroque to Viennese Art Nouveau. Beyond its myriad attractions, the city’s enchanting ambiance sets it apart. And let’s not forget the delectable cuisine! Currently, it holds the title of my most cherished Romanian city. Vibrant and bustling, Timișoara offers myriad spots to unwind and dine following a day of exploration.

It’s noteworthy that a considerable segment of the local populace is Hungarian, a reflection of historical border shifts when this territory was under Hungarian dominion.

In this segment of Romania lies Arad, a city that proved not just intriguing, as I’d heard, but also remarkably picturesque. Adorned with vibrant townhouses, sacred temples, and regal palaces, Arad exudes a charm reminiscent of Oradea. But I invite you to discern whether this is indeed the case or merely my perception. Among its attractions, the Arad Fortress, a remarkable 18th-century fortification, stands out prominently. And, of course, the city offers an array of other sites worth exploring. ?

Top Things to Do in Arad

Bologa Fortress

 Perched on Mount Vlădeas, this fortress played a pivotal role in medieval Transylvania. Its earliest documented existence traces back to 1304. Through centuries, it underwent expansions. Notably, when the Turks seized Oradea, it was Bologa that thwarted their progression. Yet, come the 18th century, to evade rebel capture, the fortress met deliberate destruction. Today, visitors enjoy unrestricted access, with the fortress welcoming guests round the clock.

What to Explore in Transylvania?

 My musings on Transylvania could span hours! The region’s allure is captivating, and I hope you too find it as enchanting as I did. The myriad attractions beckon revisits, some of which include:

• The Transfogar route – a must-drive for those with a car, as it ranks among Europe’s most scenic routes, offering panoramic vistas.
• Sighișoara – a medieval town, transporting you to bygone eras. Based on numerous recommendations, it’s an experience akin to time-travel. ?
• Bran Castle – Popularly dubbed “Dracula’s Castle”, its history is more intricate than commonly perceived. Beyond these landmarks, Transylvania is sprinkled with quaint villages, each emanating a distinctive charm, further accentuated by breathtaking mountainous backdrops.

In Transylvania, you’ll find a wide variety of accommodation options to suit your needs. From hotels and guesthouses to rental apartments, there’s something for everyone.

Often dubbed “Little Vienna,” Timișoara boasts the most historical buildings in Romania. Its rich architectural tapestry ranges from Baroque to Viennese Art Nouveau. However, it’s not just the architecture that beckons visitors.

What captivated me most about Timișoara was its vibrant atmosphere. And let’s not forget the delectable food! The city pulses with life, offering an array of pubs that warmly welcome visitors after a day of exploring. Truly a melting pot, Timișoara, like many spots in Transylvania, embraces a multicultural identity. A significant number of its inhabitants are Hungarians, remnants of a time when the region was under Hungarian jurisdiction.

Attractions of Timisoara

Wondering what sights await you in Timișoara? The city’s essence is encapsulated in its historic heart: the Cetate district.

The Cetate district presents a harmonious blend of eras. On one side, the downtown area is punctuated with historical landmarks, housing some of the city’s oldest structures. Contrasting this, you’ll find regions characterized by relatively newer buildings, which emerged following the dismantling of the original fortifications.

Huniade Castle

Dominating the cityscape is the Huniade Castle. Despite being ravaged in 1849, it was painstakingly restored and now shelters the Banat Museum (though it’s currently undergoing renovation as of summer 2023). Echoes of an 18th-century fortress linger, contributing to the city’s rich architectural legacy.

Union Square

In the heart of Timișoara lie its iconic squares, each radiating a distinct architectural aura. Take the Union Square (Romanian: Piața Unirii), crafted in elegant Baroque design. It invites visitors to step into the Roman Catholic Cathedral, marvel at the Plague Column, and explore even more. After all, it’s Timișoara’s oldest square. In its vicinity, the Art Museum and the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral further enhance its historical charm.

Victory Square

(Romanian: Piața Victoriei), emblematic in its own right. László Székely, its architect, drew from Austrian influences to frame the expansive area between the imposing Metropolitan Cathedral and the Palace of Culture. Within this palace, the National Theater and Opera House breathe life into the arts. Notably, the cathedral, standing as Romania’s second-largest church, mirrors the architectural brilliance of Moldavian monasteries.

Liberty Square

(Romanian: Piața Libertății), once the military heart of the city. Its buildings seamlessly blend Baroque, Classical, and Art Nouveau aesthetics. A short stroll brings you to St. George’s Square. Here, the site of a former Jesuit church, which later morphed into a mosque, is now crowned by an equestrian statue of the dragon-slaying patron saint. This poignant monument stands as a homage to those who perished in the Romanian Revolution.

The Cathedral of the Three Holy Hierarchs: Timișoara’s Architectural Marvel

Towering majestically in Timișoara stands the Cathedral of the Three Holy Hierarchs, not only a religious masterpiece but also an emblem of the city. Constructed between 1936 and 1941, its design deceives its age, echoing the older grandeur of Moldovan architecture—especially reminiscent of the Church of St. George in Hârlau.

The cathedral is a vision straight from a fairytale, punctuated by thirteen towers—nine grand ones and four of more diminutive stature. The main spire, soaring to an awe-inspiring 83.7 meters, is a testament to architectural prowess and stands regally above the rest of the structure. It masterfully weaves Romanian heritage with nuances of Moldavian and Byzantine styles.

Timișoara’s Rose Park: A Blooming Oasis in the City of Roses

Timișoara wears the proud title of the “City of Roses,” and its Rose Park stands as a testament to this epithet. This captivating rosarium was birthed between 1929 and 1934, initially boasting 1,200 distinct species and varieties of roses. Prior to World War II’s upheaval, a summer theater graced the park, but tragically faced the brunt of the 1944 bombings.

Post-war resilience saw the theater rise from its ashes, and in 2012, the park experienced a renaissance. Over 11,000 square meters flourished anew with 9,024 roses and a verdant expanse of 428 trees and shrubs. As part of this revival, pergolas, benches, and ornate vases reminiscent of bygone eras were restored to their former glory. For those who find solace in nature’s embrace, the Rose Park is a haven waiting to be explored.

New Synagogue in Timisoara

Among the city’s gems is the New Synagogue, a marvel built in the evocative Moorish style. It stands distinctively as one of the most architecturally striking synagogues I’ve encountered. Beyond its beauty, it speaks volumes of the Jewish community’s historical significance in Timișoara, a community once pivotal to the city’s tapestry. Having faced years of neglect, this sacred edifice has been rejuvenated through restoration.

Diverse Attractions of Timișoara

Timișoara, with its expansive charm, boasts an array of attractions beyond its central landmarks. Whether you’re a museum aficionado or a photo enthusiast in search of picturesque corners, the city caters to all.

For the Instagrammers among us, Alba Iulia Street is a must-visit. As you wander, allow the vibrant canopy of umbrellas overhead to captivate and color your feed. ?

For those keen on a journey through time, the Banat Village Museum offers a window into the traditional ethos of western Romania’s Banat region. Set in the open air, it displays an assortment of Banat’s architectural legacy — from humble cottages to intricate edifices. Alas, my own visit was curtailed by time, leaving this unique treasure unexplored.

Restaurants in Timisoara

Timișoara promises an epicurean journey that’s as diverse as its history. Here are some top picks from my culinary explorations:

Miorița stands tall as my personal favorite. Every dish here is a testament to authentic Romanian flavors, served with professionalism. Their stuffed cabbage (Romanian: Sarmale) is, by my reckoning, the pièce de résistance of Romanian cuisine.

Dinar Restaurant offers an experience that goes beyond the palate. Nestled in a rustic old hut, it’s a haven for those seeking hearty portions amidst evocative decor. The ambiance is nothing short of warm and welcoming. Give their local ciorba a try, even if the prices are a tad steeper than the city’s average.

For the pizza aficionados, La Trattoria Cucina Moderna is the place to be. Simple, delicious, and authentic!

Lastly, on the recommendation of my Romanian colleague, Eddie, is Timișoreana Beer. Although I couldn’t personally visit, it promises an intriguing blend of dining and brewery experience. As you savor your meal, the backdrop of local beer production adds a unique flair. And with the craft beer wave surging across Europe, Timișoara is no exception, with new breweries making their mark on the city’s vibrant scene.

Timișoara, with its rich tapestry of history and culture, offers a myriad of accommodations to suit every traveler’s need.

Hotels are aplenty, catering to varying budgets and requirements. Whether you’re in the city for a quick business trip or a longer leisurely stay, you’ll find a hotel that ticks all your boxes.

Cluj-Napoca, situated at the heart of Transylvania, ranks among Romania’s most pivotal cities. It was the second city I visited in the country. Over a few days, I was able to explore some of the city’s key attractions and surrounding landmarks.

Cluj-Napoca boasts an array of tourist spots, delectable dining options, and captivating scenic trails. In this piece, I will guide you through the must-see places in Cluj-Napoca. Come, let’s embark on this journey!

Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu

Our journey begins with Cluj’s Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu. While not every traveler might gravitate towards a park visit, in this instance, it’s an absolute must. This historic haven, nestled in the heart of the city, is adorned with picturesque pathways, artistic sculptures, and ornate fountains. A unique feature of the park is its serene pond, which houses an island that is a sanctuary for various bird species. If inclined, you can even rent boats or vibrant water bikes.

Reasons to Visit: The park exudes a charming ambiance. It’s an ideal spot to unwind with a leisurely lunch or a cup of coffee at a café overlooking the pond. Moreover, the park is home to the rare black swans – a sight not to be missed! For me, it stands out as one of the city’s top spots.

Did You Know? The park is named in honor of Simion Bărnuțiu, a renowned Romanian lawyer, professor, and revolutionary.

National Ethnographic Park of Cluj-Napoca “Romulus Vuia”

Established in 1929, the National Ethnographic Park of Cluj-Napoca “Romulus Vuia” holds the distinction of being Romania’s first open-air museum. Originally, this land was occupied by rustic farms. The formative years of the park witnessed the relocation of various items such as homes, sheepfolds, and road crosses from diverse parts of Transylvania. The park also hosted a restaurant that served traditional delicacies. Tragically, the park suffered extensive damage during World War II.

The post-war years saw its transformation, with the space being segmented into thematic sectors to represent different facets of traditional Transylvanian life. These segments encompass traditional craft methods, regional peasant farms, and various other life facets from that era.

These relocated structures, handpicked by ethnographers, are treasured exemplars of Romania’s ethnographic architecture. The interiors of the houses, churches, and other edifices reflect the customary lifestyle of the Transylvanian populace.

Pro Tip: This is, in my opinion, the prime location to procure traditional Romanian souvenirs. Here, you can find authentic handicrafts, including exquisite pottery, mugs, and costumes at reasonable rates.

Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden

The Cluj-Napoca Botanical Garden, an integral part of the university, is named after Alexandru Borza, a distinguished Romanian botanist who played a pivotal role in its establishment. This botanical paradise houses a staggering array of approximately 10,000 plant species sourced globally. Visitors are treated to both exotic flora and native species of Transylvania. While I personally find botanical gardens most enchanting in spring, a summer visit is also rewarding, especially for witnessing unique exotic plants and the mesmerizing Japanese Garden.

Union Square (Unirii Square)

Union Square stands as Cluj-Napoca’s most significant square, bordered by magnificent Austro-Hungarian-era edifices. It serves as a popular rendezvous point for both locals and tourists. More specifically, many of Cluj-Napoca’s gems are nestled between Unirii Square and Avram Iancu Square. St. Michael’s Church, with its imposing structure, and the statue of Matthias Corvinus are prominent features of Unirii Square. Constructed in the 14th-century Gothic style, the cathedral is a prime attraction and an emblematic monument of Cluj.

Not too far, Avram Iancu Square showcases another prominent religious site — the Sobor of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Its interior is a splendid array of intricate artistry and detailed craftsmanship.

Cluj-Napoca’s Other Attractions

 As Romania’s second-largest city, Cluj-Napoca is a treasure trove of attractions. Here are some highlights:

• Cetatuia Park: Perched atop a city hill, the park offers panoramic vistas of Cluj-Napoca.
• National Theater and Romanian Opera House
• Tailors’ Tower
• House of Matthias Corvinus: Once home to the king of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia.

Museums in Cluj-Napoca

For museum aficionados, Cluj-Napoca doesn’t disappoint. Apart from the aforementioned Ethnographic Park, consider exploring:

• Ethnographic Museum: Conveniently located downtown.
• National Museum of Transylvanian History: A comprehensive journey through Transylvania’s past, from prehistoric eras to contemporary times.
• Museum of Art: Nestled in the Baroque Bánffy Palace, this museum showcases pivotal Romanian artworks.
• Museum of Pharmacy: A deep dive into the annals of medical and pharmaceutical history.

Dining in Cluj-Napoca

 The city boasts an abundance of eateries, bars, and cafés that serve authentic local dishes and wines. My personal recommendations include:

• Zama: A city center restaurant that marries modern aesthetics with traditional cuisine.
• Restaurant Valachia: A bit off the beaten path, it’s renowned for its scrumptious soups and main dishes like “cabbage ala Cluj”. The service is swift and efficient.
• Roata Făget: Slightly farther from the downtown core, this spot impresses with its delectable dishes and iconic papanasi. However, patience is key here as wait times can be lengthy.

Lodging in Cluj-Napoca

From upscale hotels to cozy guesthouses, Cluj-Napoca offers a plethora of accommodation options catering to varied budgets. My experiences in Romania, backed by Booking.com reviews, suggest a generally high standard. For top-rated lodgings, refer to the provided link and the accompanying map.

Nearby Attractions

The city’s surroundings are replete with fascinating sites. Before diving into the local attractions, I must give a shoutout to the city of Oradea. If you haven’t set foot in this city, it deserves a spot on your list. I’ve penned down my thoughts, recommendations, and experiences in Oradea in a separate post.

Salina Turda Salt Mine

 Distinct from the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine, Salina Turda offers a unique exploration experience. Guests are free to navigate the mine’s expansive corridors spanning nearly a kilometer. This subterranean world conceals marvels such as acoustically impressive chambers and a hidden underground lake.

Cheile Turzii Gorge

Situated a stone’s throw from Cluj-Napoca, Cheile Turzii is acclaimed as one of Romania’s most picturesque canyons. A haven for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and climbers, the gorge presents a tableau of towering cliffs, a serenely meandering river, and a maze of caves. Besides its natural beauty, it’s also a prime spot for birdwatching, especially for those keen on spotting birds of prey like the peregrine falcon.

Tureni Gorge (Cheile Tureniului)

 This secondary gorge, though lesser-known, doesn’t skimp on beauty. Characterized by its jagged cliffs and rock formations, Cheile Tureniului is a magnet for rock-climbing aficionados. Its serene environs make it perfect for brief hikes or a simple retreat from city life. A word of caution from my own experience: always be wary of sudden weather changes. Our hike was abruptly curtailed by an unexpected storm!

Hoia Baciu – The Eerie Forest

Beyond the confines of Cluj-Napoca lies a forest steeped in enigma. Hoia Baciu is not your typical woodland; it’s shrouded in tales of paranormal activities. This uncanny reputation draws the brave-hearted from far and wide. I, however, chose discretion over valor on this particular trip. ?

As our journey in the region spanned just a few days, there remain countless unexplored trails and sites. I’m compelled to revisit Romania, with a particular inclination towards the southern realms of Transylvania where numerous adventures await.

Beyond these, the region brims with more sites and trails. My stay spanned a few days, but I’m certain I’ll revisit Romania, particularly southern Transylvania, where much remains to be explored.

The Turda Salt Mine, concealed in the heart of Romania, stands as one of the most unique destinations among European tourist attractions. Distinct from the Wieliczka Salt Mine, visitors can explore it without a guide. The nearly kilometer-long salt labyrinth contains various secrets and attractions, ranging from chambers with excellent acoustics to an underground lake. To learn more about this fascinating place that melds both history and modern allure, please read on. 

Where to Park a Car? 

Parking is available under the mine itself, costing 5 lei per hour, and card payments are accepted. Outside the mine, there are also private parking lots, charging rates like 4 lei per hour. If you park further away, it might be free, but during the high season, I have not seen such options. 

Things to Know Before You Go 

• Admission is 45 lei (41 PLN) per adult, and card payments are accepted. 
• The mine is accessible year-round. Remember that it’s cooler inside, so in summer, wearing long pants and a sweatshirt is advisable (it’s about 12 Celsius degrees). 
• Card payments are not accepted underground (as of my visit). 
• Until 2010, the mine entrance was at 54A Salinelor Street. Now, visitors enter through a new entrance from the Salina-Durgău tourist center (Aleea Durgău No. 7). This may seem trivial, but it can be confusing during your visit, as we and a dozen other tourists experienced – the old tour led us merely to a café. 

Salt Deposits in Romania 

In this region of Romania, salt deposits formed 13.5 million years ago when a tropical sea existed here. The layer of salt averages 400 meters thick and spreads throughout Transylvania. Although other salt mines exist in the region, recent borehole studies in Turda have shown that the salt formation there reaches about 1,200 meters high. 

Even the Romans exploited salt in the region between 106 and 274 CE, with the earliest evidence dating from 50 BCE to 106 CE. Salt mining at Salina Turda was finally terminated in 1932, due in part to low productivity. 

Salina Turda – Sightseeing 

The picturesque Turda Salt Mine is rich in fascinating mining history, having housed various mines such as: 

• Iosif Mine, operational from 1740 to 1900, 
• Rudolf Mine, from 1864-1932, 
• Terezia Mine, from 1690 to 1880, 
• Ghizela Mine, from 1857 to 1932, 
• Anton Mine, from the early 18th century to 1862. 

After years of closure, Salina Turda reopened to the public in 1992, offering unique attractions to tourists and curiosity-seekers. 

A tour through Turda Salt Mine guides you along a nearly kilometer-long salt corridor. You can explore various halls and narrow passages that lead to the main chamber, reminiscent of a maze. The vast and diverse space inside the mine has transformed into a real underground entertainment city. 

Here you’ll find an amphitheater for performances and events, a Ferris wheel, a miniature golf course, and bowling lanes for more traditional enjoyment. A playground for the little ones ensures there’s something for everyone. 

One of the most captivating spots is the underground salt lake. Uniquely beautiful and surreal, you can admire this landscape while gliding through in a rented boat.

Oradea. My journey through Romania began there. No wonder, since it is located only 13 kilometers from the border with Hungary and I was driving from Hungary I heard from my colleague, a Romanian named Eddie, that, in his opinion, it is the most beautiful city in the country. Oradea has undergone an impressive transformation in recent years, and many buildings have been restored.

Although I expected Oradea to be really pretty, it impressed me even more in person. The city looks amazing, and its architectural style is reminiscent of Barcelona, but without the crowds.

What is worth seeing in Oradea? What are the most interesting attractions of the city? I will tell you about them in this post.

Oradea – What is Worth Knowing?

Oradea is the tenth-largest city in Romania, located on the banks of the Crișul Repede River. Many Hungarians live in this part of Romania, so you can often hear Hungarian spoken on the streets, and even see Hungarian street names. This cultural blend is a unique aspect of the city that I think is worth knowing about when visiting Transylvania.

Originally known as Varadinum, Oradea’s history can be traced back to 113 AD when this name was first recorded. Nevertheless, evidence of human presence in the region goes back as far as the 4th century BC.

Union Square (Unirii Square)

This is where we will begin our tour of the city. The square is surrounded by significant buildings, including the City Hall, the Black Eagle Palace, the Bishop’s Palace, and several others, as well as restaurants and cafes.

As you walk around the square, you will notice that Oradea is home to many buildings in the Art Nouveau style, possessing high architectural value. While no one is likely to count them during a tour, according to Romanian sources, there are 89 of them.

Black Eagle Palace (Vulturul Negru)

This building is by far the most famous in the city.

The palace, consisting of two Y-shaped segments, is characteristic of the Art Nouveau style.

Some compare this shape to the form of an eagle’s beak. The building is adorned with a glazed passageway and floral and animal decorations. The black eagle in the stained glass window, which gave the building its name, dates back to 1909 and was created by a local studio.

The Black Eagle Palace houses various facilities, including a hotel, restaurant, cafes, clubs, and offices.

Calea Republicii Street

If you enjoy admiring the Art Nouveau style, a walk down this street is a must. Stretching 600 meters in length, Calea Republicii has been transformed into a pedestrian zone. Today, it’s the perfect place to admire the colorful townhouses, each designed in the distinct Art Nouveau style.

Deutsch’s Lighting Store (Casa Deutsch)

Interesting buildings are plentiful in Oradea, and among them is Casa Deutsch. This former glass, porcelain, and lamp store stands as one of the most attractive Art Nouveau buildings, located on Vasile Alecsandri Street.

However, what sets it apart is not only its unique appearance but also the history of the Deutsch family, who were known for their success in the glass business in the Black Forest. The family’s origins can be traced back to Ignác, the patriarch. His sons, who later changed their name to Dénes, continued to expand the “German glass empire.” Before World War I, they were one of the wealthiest families in Oradea.

Tragically, the family’s fortune took a turn for the worse. Sándor Dénes fought on the Eastern Front in World War I, and after his return, family members began to die one by one under tragic circumstances. This sequence of events culminated in Sándor’s suicide in 1934, marking a somber chapter in the history of Oradea.

Oradea Fortress

The medieval fortress of Oradea, built in the 11th century, is situated at a strategic point in the city, on the Crișul Repede River. This location provided excellent defense in the past, making it a key defensive point of the region for many centuries, as is common with such fortresses.

Nowadays, visitors can explore the fortress site and even take part in various workshops.

The fortress has a unique star-shaped appearance when viewed from the air, consisting of bastions connected by walls. It’s a sight to behold, and one that you can see for yourself:

Baroque Complex in Oradea

The Baroque complex in Oradea was constructed in the 18th century and includes a cathedral, palace, houses, and a garden. The Roman Catholic Bishop’s Palace bears a resemblance to Vienna’s Belvedere Palace and interestingly boasts 365 windows. Even the Austrian princess Sissi once stayed in this remarkable palace. The cathedral, with its 11 altars and relics of saints, also distinguishes itself from others in this part of Europe.

The aforementioned houses within the complex are collectively referred to as “The Canons Row.” There are ten of them in total, and although they were built over many years, they are connected by a long arcade. This tunnel presents an interesting architectural feature and, in my opinion, makes a great spot for photographs or could even serve as a frame for a movie.

Churches in Oradea

Listing all the churches in Oradea is a challenge, and visiting each one could take a significant amount of time. It would depend on whether you’d like to admire the interiors or attend mass, as there are 100 churches in the city! If you prefer, you can visit just a select few, such as:

• The Capuchin Church, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
• The Church within the fortress.
• The Church of the Holy Spirit.

These examples represent the rich religious heritage of Oradea, offering a glimpse into the city’s historical and architectural diversity.

Boulevards Along the Crișul Repede River

Walking along the boulevards of Oradea is a real pleasure. Not only does it offer a chance to admire the city from a unique perspective, but you’ll also find several pubs where you can enjoy a meal or simply have a drink, whether it’s coffee or something stronger.

Unfortunately, at least at the moment, Romanian dishes may not be on the menu, but if you’re in the mood for a burger or pizza, you’ll certainly find those options. Whether for dining or just taking in the sights, the boulevards provide a delightful experience.

Oradea – Attractions

Of course, the places mentioned above are not the only interesting locations in Oradea. Some of the most frequently highlighted sites in guidebooks include:

• Darvas La Roche House: An Art Nouveau museum that showcases this distinct architectural style.
• Nymphaea Aquapark: A fun and relaxing water park that offers entertainment for all ages.
• Zion Neological Synagogue (Zion): An impressive and historically significant religious site.
• Teatrul de Stat: A renowned state theater known for its cultural performances.

These attractions add to the rich tapestry of Oradea, offering both historical insights and modern entertainment for visitors.

Where to eat in Oradea?

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to try Romanian cuisine, I strongly encourage you to explore it. If you’ve already been to Romania, you’ll likely know what I mean.

For those looking for a recommendation for lunch or dinner, I suggest visiting Cyrano at Calea Republicii 7. Whether you’re new to Romanian flavors or a returning fan, this place offers an excellent chance to enjoy the culinary delights of the region.

In Oradea, you’ll find a wide variety of accommodation options to suit your needs. From hotels and guesthouses to rental apartments, there’s something for everyone. Many facilities are located in the city center, but if you prefer a quieter setting, apartments can be rented more on the outskirts. That’s what we chose to do, as we had our cat, Pearl, traveling with us on the trip—a companion we always take on longer journeys.
