10 Best Places to Visit In Andalucia

Someone said that Andalusia is addictive, and the first trip to the area will not be the last, and for good reason! Andalusia is really big, diverse, and interesting. There, you can discover charming towns, beautiful mountains, unspoiled nature, and larger cities where you can get lost, visit amazing museums, or sample the local cuisine.

But where did Andalusia even come from? A popular legend about the origin of Andalusia tells of Hercules, the mythological god who divided Europe from Africa through the Straits of Gibraltar. Thus, Hercules became the symbol of the region, and alongside two columns, he was placed on the white and green flag of Andalusia.

Today, I will talk about what to see in Andalusia. I spent a few winter weeks on the Costa del Sol, and during that time, I explored the region’s lesser-known and more famous corners. The list, as you might expect, represents the beginning of exploring this incredibly beautiful area. If you’d like to add something of your own, I look forward to your comments.

Alhambra – a UNESCO-listed Moorish gem!

The Alhambra is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Andalusia. If you are planning a trip to Andalusia, Granada and the remarkable Alhambra should definitely be on your list of places to see. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress is one of the most impressive examples of Moorish architecture. This castle-fortress captivates not only in photos but also in person. The Moorish rulers, when creating this building, were guided by the desire to create a paradise on earth. In my opinion, they succeeded! The second part of the tour is the huge Generalife – one of the oldest surviving Moorish gardens, the summer residence of the rulers of Granada. On the decorations in many places, you can see inscriptions from the Quran. The tour takes a minimum of 2 hours, not counting the interior of the palace, which takes about an hour to visit. It is worth preparing for 3-4 hours if you want to see everything and relax in the gardens. From the Alhambra, you can see the peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Their altitude reaches 3,500 meters above sea level, and at this time of year, they are snow-capped.

Málaga: Coastal Gem

La Concepción Park is a place where you can spend the whole day. There is somewhere to walk and somewhere to have a picnic. During the week, there were practically no visitors, but on weekends, this tends to change as it’s quite a popular place among locals. It’s worth knowing that the color of the water depends on the hour you come. We were there really early in the morning, and in my opinion, this is not the best time. The higher the sun, the bluer the water.
The Botanical Garden in Málaga costs €5.20, and it’s free on Sundays from 2 pm (winter season, different hours in summer). I know some of you will say that nature in Spain is so beautiful that you don’t need to pay extra. But it’s really WORTH it. It’s a romantic garden with winding alleys and flowing streams – a place perfect for nature lovers. Singing birds and virtually no other tourists create a soothing ambiance. Perfect.

Besides, while in Málaga, it’s worth visiting the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba fortress, take a walk through the Old Town, and sit in one of the many cafes. Remember that when buying a ticket to the castle, it is worth buying a ticket to the fortress right away (it is cheaper).

Pico del Cielo – Breathtaking Scenic Trail

We often go to the mountains when traveling, looking for beautiful, scenic routes. The destination itself doesn’t matter to me; I sometimes even turn back halfway, depending on my condition or the trail. In Andalusia, you will find a mass of beautiful trails, but I would like to recommend Pico del Cielo (1508 m), located near Nerja. It is not the highest peak in the Sierra Almijara, but the road is definitely beautiful! It’s worth climbing to the top because, although the view on the trail is amazing, of the mountains and the sea, the view from the top of Pico del Cielo is even better!

There are several trails; from the Nerja side, there are two to choose from:

10 km, counting from the parking lot at the cave
5 km from the second parking lot – then we have most of the scenic route, well, and no one will dust us on the way ?

Nerja: A Charming Town on the Costa del Sol

On the Costa del Sol, I was delighted by the town of Nerja, located about 40 minutes from Malaga; in my opinion, it is the most beautiful town in the area. What is worth doing here? There are quite a few interesting places and attractions in this Andalusian town!

Balcón de Europa – a beautiful viewpoint worth seeing
Cueva de Nerja or cave located in this village. It is here that you will find the world’s largest stalagmite with a height of 32 meters! Entrance is free at 9:30 am.
Museum – on the same ticket as the cave, you can enter the museum. It is worth it; it is really interesting.
The beaches at this time of year (February) are rather empty, sometimes a few people are sunbathing during the day. The beaches in Nerja are beautiful, undeniably.

Rio Chillar Trail

The Chillar River Trail begins in the town of Nerja, 40 minutes from Malaga. Although I’ve already mentioned the town in this post, the trail is a less popular attraction that I think deserves a separate paragraph. Why? It’s a place where we can feel nature with all our senses: it’s peaceful, we can hear the sound of the river, and from, say, halfway along the trail, we walk on water!

The route starts quite innocently; it is surrounded by rocks, and you can hardly see the river. I thought it would be like this until the end, but the further you go, the wider the river gets. In years of heavy rainfall, the trail can be flooded with water up to the knees! This year, the water was at most before the knee, up to mid-calf, and that’s further down the trail. The trail is not crowded, either on weekends or during the week; instead, it is extremely beautiful. I personally walked it twice, and it is, in my opinion, a real gem among the attractions of Andalusia.

Important notes:

There is no internet or coverage on the route, so you have to be really careful.
Walking on the water can be done in shoes designed for this purpose, but many people complain that they are uncomfortable. Personally, I walked in sneakers, and it was OK.
The route is easy, but you need to be careful walking on the stones (they can be slippery, but it happens).
It takes at least 3 hours to walk the route (there and back) (that’s how much we walked, but we did not reach the waterfall!).

Frigiliana – One of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain

Frigiliana is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain – this is not my opinion; it has held this title since 2015! Located 300 meters above sea level, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, it delights many tourists. It is a place that combines three cultures: Christians, Jews, and Muslims once lived here.

In addition to strolling through the truly charming Andalusian streets, it’s worth hiking any of the mountain trails or even enjoying a cup of coffee overlooking the coast.

Parque de la Paloma If you’re looking for an unusual city park, make a note of this place: the Parque de la Paloma located in the town of Benalmadena, just outside Málaga. Why is it so unusual? At first glance, it’s not much different from other places. It features cafes, a pond, and palm trees. What is unique about it are the animals. Free-running roosters, chickens, ducks, rabbits add to the incredibly familiar atmosphere of the place. I heartily recommend it!

Interesting fact: in many places in Andalusia, you will meet green parrots. In this park, there are really a lot of them!

Marbella – An Exclusive Resort in Andalusia

Marbella is, according to many, the city to visit. This is where the best cars come, there are trendy pubs and clubs. The icing on the cake will be that you will drink an extremely Instagram-able pink cappuccino here. All right, but what else is worth doing in Marbella? Marbella is famous for its beautiful beaches, seaside promenade, unique harbor, and nightlife. Of course, there are mountains in the area, and there are a bunch of interesting attractions and Gibraltar. Although, according to some, it’s a rather snobbish place, and I’m not fond of such, I really liked Marbella, and if we go to Andalusia again, I’ll stay in its area – it really has a lot to offer!

Cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo

The cliffs located near Malaga are truly phenomenal. Let’s start with the fact that it’s a great place for walking; there are several trails here. Besides, the region is famous for the small beaches hidden between the cliffs. The views from the cliffs are unearthly, and according to the guidebook, on sunny, clear days, you will see the African coastline from them. Worth seeing is La Marquesa watchtower, erected in the 16th century to guard the sea when pirates sailed the Mediterranean. I would add that there are four more similar towers, and you can learn more about their history at the museum in Nerja.

Andalusian Ronda – City Full of History

Ronda is located deep in the mountains. Driving from Málaga, you can still marvel at the amazing climate and green hills. The city consists of two main districts: La Ciudad, the Arab part, and El Mercadillo, the Christian part. A bridge connects the two parts but separates them by a very deep gorge, the Guadalevín River. The gorge is 160 meters deep, and you can walk to it (there is also a waterfall at the bottom).

What is worth doing and seeing in Ronda? This is actually a day trip, as there are many attractions. The Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor, palaces, museums, bullring arena, gardens. And that’s not the only attraction in the area; there are many more places worth visiting in this part of Andalusia, for example, the Setenil de las Bodegas.

Setenil de las Bodegas – the Rock City in Andalusia

Located less than 20 kilometers from Ronda, it is one of the more popular destinations in Andalusia. A tourist route of pueblos blancos – white towns – runs through the town, but that’s not what sets it apart from other places in Spain. Setenil de las Bodegas is a town carved into the rock! The rocks are home to houses, stores, and restaurants. If you are interested in this topic, another such place is the rock houses in Guadix.

Andalusia – What to Eat?

In Andalusia, you should try both Spanish cuisine and typically Andalusian cuisine. There are really a lot of dishes, and I will cite three interesting flavors:

Roasted eggplant with cane syrup is a traditional Andalusian dish. You can choose it as a lunchtime appetizer.
Salmorejo, which is a cooler similar to gazpacho soup but thicker (with the addition of bread). In my opinion, both soups are worth trying, although I personally prefer gazpacho.
Manzanilla is a fortified white wine from the Jerez region of Andalusia. The wine has aromas of wildflowers, olives, candied fruits, and almonds. It won’t be my favorite wine, but it’s worth trying while in this region of Spain!

Andalusia – Where to Stay?

Andalusia is a large region, so with overnight stays, there is one problem. If you plan to visit all the interesting places and attractions, you can spend a really long time in the car. That’s why it’s a good idea to plan it in advance, what you want to see, and, above all, check the distances. We visited Gibraltar and less popular points in addition to the mentioned attractions and spent 39 hours in the car, covering 2750 km. Getting to the airport (we landed in Madrid) took about 9 hours round trip, but even 30 hours for 2.5 weeks is plenty, in my opinion.

What is worth seeing in Andalusia?

These are, of course, some of the attractions I visited. As you can see, most of the places I visited were around Malaga, where we stayed. What else is worth seeing in Andalusia? What is the most beautiful Andalusian city/place? I’m curious about your opinions!

Other Andalusian attractions include (among others):

Seville, first of all, climb the Giralda. It used to be a minaret, now a cathedral tower, from which you can see the city skyline beautifully.
Medina Azahara – the ruins of an Arab lost city from the 10th century.
Pulpí Geode – a giant geode, one of the largest in the entire world.
Úbeda and Baeza in the province of Jaén – two UNESCO-listed Renaissance towns.
The highest peak in mainland Spain, Mulhacén (3482 meters above sea level).
Tabernas desert.
Parque Nacional de Doñana – a park that has been listed as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site, an amazing sanctuary for fauna, especially birds. It is worth going here in spring; in summer, some people are not satisfied (it is about the number of animals).

The Top Things to See and Do in Alicante

Alicante, a coastal city in southeastern Spain, is popular among tourists due to its unique location and beautiful landscapes. Known as Alacant in Valenciano, Alicante is nestled on the Mediterranean Sea, along the Costa Blanca. It is acclaimed for having some of the best beaches in Spain! Besides, Alicante is a treasure trove of attractions and historical buildings, ensuring there’s never a dull moment in the city. This region has been inhabited since approximately 5000-3000 BC, boasting an incredibly rich history.

There are myriad reasons to visit this exquisite city. For instance, Alicante houses several museums where art and history enthusiasts can immerse themselves in fascinating exhibits. As evening rolls in, you can settle down in a restaurant, sipping on wine or indulging in a scrumptious Spanish meal.

Having visited Alicante in both summer and winter, I can vouch for its allure year-round. The photos featured in this post are from August, September, and January. In this post, I’ll delve into what to see in Alicante, the best spots for beach-going, and which pubs are worth your time for a meal or a coffee.

Alicante – Map of Attractions

To start off, I’d like to emphasize the importance of an itinerary, as without one, navigation can be quite challenging. What are the Best Attractions in Alicante?

Alicante, known for its myriad attractions, ranging from monuments and beaches to viewpoints and museums, promises something for every visitor. The most iconic site in Alicante is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, a castle that stands as the city’s most prominent landmark. Not only does it hold historical significance, but it also offers breathtaking views. There are multiple ways to reach the castle, including walking, taking a bus, or driving (though the parking lot is situated a few hundred meters from the castle). You could even take an elevator from the beach, though it’s worth noting that the elevator has been out of service for several months, so it’s best not to count on it.

Contrary to what one might think, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara is not the only castle in Alicante. The Castell de Sant Ferran, while not as visually stunning and mostly in ruins, provides a spectacular vantage point for viewing the city and the aforementioned Castillo de Santa Bárbara. You can reach this viewpoint by car. As it’s not one of the main attractions, it tends to be a quieter spot, making it a hidden gem.

What to See in Alicante

So, what else is worth seeing in Alicante?

Certainly, the district referred to as El Barrio or Barrio de Cruz, which translates to the Old Town in English. As you meander through the narrow streets, you’ll encounter several distinctive buildings, such as the 17th-century St. Nicholas Concathedral, topped with a blue dome, and the imposing City Hall, nestled among the ruins of medieval walls. The Old Town is also home to the 14th-century Basílica de Santa María church, which interestingly, served as a mosque for many years.

Centro – A Neighborhood Full of Interesting Places in Alicante!

Another neighborhood worth exploring is Centro, aptly named as it is the city center. Extremely popular and meticulously maintained, it teems with people and is considered the pulsating heart of Alicante. Here, you’ll discover beautiful squares adorned with enormous fig trees and even fountains, such as in the case of Plaza de Gabriel Miró. It’s worth stopping by Plaza de la Puerta de San Francisco, renowned for its designer boutiques. Plaza Portal de Elche, with its impressive fig tree, is a sight to behold. In addition, make sure to stroll along Explanada de España and visit the historic market hall.

Other Interesting Places in Alicante Include:

Mushroom Street, a unique thoroughfare adorned with large mushroom sculptures.
Alicante Archaeological Museum.

To fully experience all the attractions, a week might not suffice. However, if you wish to explore Alicante within a few hours, you’ll need to have a good level of fitness.

Parc El Palmerar: A Palm Park in Alicante

While the Palm Park in Elche boasts the largest collection of palm trees in Spain, you don’t have to travel far to see these majestic trees in Alicante. Parc El Palmerar, though smaller, is undeniably striking. The park is well-kept and photogenic, featuring a waterfall and flowing streams as its unique selling points. It’s common to see kittens strolling around the park and, remarkably, it remains uncrowded both in summer and winter, making it an ideal spot for photoshoots and relaxation.

This park is located on the outskirts of the city and is absolutely worth the drive! The Alicante Palm Park is equipped with a cafe and plenty of benches, inviting you to pack a picnic and revel in the beauty of the location.

Beaches in Alicante

No guide to Alicante would be complete without mentioning its renowned beaches. Alicante and its surrounding areas are celebrated for some of the finest sandy beaches in Spain, with over a dozen within the city limits. The beaches in Alicante include:

Agua Amarga
Almadraba
Cala Cantalar
Cala Sangueta
Carabassí
La Albufereta
Postiguet
Saladares
San Gabriel
San Juan

My personal favorite is San Juan Playa. Even during peak season, parking was readily available, and there’s an array of restaurants to choose from. The sand is soft, and there’s ample space to spread out and relax. I acknowledge that other beaches might be more visually stunning, but San Juan Playa is where I found the most tranquility. Furthermore, I’m particularly eager to visit Carabassi, as the photos I’ve seen make it look incredibly appealing.

Where to Eat in Alicante?

Among Alicante’s restaurants, I highly recommend Restaurante Los Porrones. It’s particularly enjoyable at lunchtime when a full set meal, including an appetizer, main course, and wine, is available at a significantly reduced price. Expect flavorful dishes, generous portions, and friendly service.
For those interested in chain restaurants, TacoBell offers tacos and various Mexican specialties in Spain. While I enjoyed this place in the U.S., it didn’t quite meet my expectations here.
If you’re in the mood for a picnic, consider grabbing a takeaway lunch to enjoy at Parc El Palmerar.

Where to Get Coffee in Alicante?

We visited Tierra Solidaria and Mandala Cafe, both of which I highly recommend for their excellent coffee and pleasant service. If you’re craving churros, you can easily find them near the beach entrance at a stall in Placa Porta del Mar. It’s worth visiting a beachside cafe to enjoy a sweet cappuccino with a view!

Renting a Car in Alicante

Car rentals are available in the city and at Alicante’s airport. The cost varies:

In August, we rented a car from RecordGo at the airport. We paid less than 100 euros for a week’s rental, with insurance purchased separately.
In January, we rented a car from Budget for two days, costing 60 euro plus insurance. We picked up the vehicle at the station in Alicante and returned it in Valencia.

Alicante Airport – How to Reach the City?

If you opt not to rent a car, you can take a taxi or bus to the city center. The bus stop, serviced by line C-6, is conveniently located just below the terminal. As of January 2022, the fare was 3.85 euros.

Accommodation in Alicante

Alicante offers a wide selection of hotels and rental apartments. Regardless of the time of year, there were plenty of options. In the winter, we stayed in a rented apartment in the city center, while in the summer, we rented a house in the mountains.

Weather in Alicante

Before visiting Alicante, it’s essential to check the weather. In winter, for instance in January, the weather in Alicante may not always be ideal for beach activities. The average daytime temperature is around 17°C, occasionally reaching up to 20°C, but there can be chillier days. However, if sightseeing is your thing, vacationing during this period can be a huge success! As you might expect in Spain, summer is quite hot, and even in autumn, October in Alicante remains very warm! The temperature can reach 30°C, and despite the sea starting to cool down, it’s still warm enough for a swim.

Why Visit Alicante?

The city mainly draws visitors with its famous attractions and beaches, nestled in the heart of the Costa Blanca. Alicante is beautiful, atmospheric, and it’s no surprise that it has become one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors annually. I highly recommend Alicante and its surroundings – there’s a reason I’ve returned multiple times, and I don’t believe it will be my last visit.

It’s worth noting that the places and points of interest mentioned above don’t exhaust everything Alicante has to offer. There are countless fascinating facts about Alicante. Here are some that were shared with me by one of my readers who resides in Alicante:

Did you know about the Lovers’ Park? Look at the map and search for Plaza de Gabriel Miro. In the 19th century, the Mediterranean Sea reached this location!
Here’s a second interesting fact about Alicante: in the mountains of Serra Grossa, you’ll find reservoirs from the former La Brittanica complex.
Interestingly, the origins of the city’s founding aren’t located in Alicante itself, but in a place called Luceros.
The history of Alicante’s second castle, which is currently inaccessible, is also fascinating. But you’ll have to explore that one on your own!

Best Things to Do in Valencia, Spain

Valencia is situated on the Mediterranean Sea, along Spain’s Costa de Valencia. Significantly, you can fly directly to Valencia from numerous cities in Europe, making it an ideal getaway during winter (with a daytime average of 17 degrees), and in summer, it is a region that almost guarantees sunshine.

I’ve visited Valencia in both summer and other vacation times, and both instances proved perfect for exploring the city. While summer may have been slightly too hot, the city’s abundance of trees offers much-needed shade from the sun. In addition to the beach, Valencia is home to several attractions, including the renowned City of Arts and Sciences. Valencia also hosts the spectacular Festival of Fire (Fallas), where you can marvel at figures crafted from cardboard and wax (which are ultimately set alight!). I had the opportunity to witness the festival’s commencement, and I must say, the figures are truly remarkable!

In this post, I will discuss what to see in Valencia, suggest some lunch spots, and share some photos of the city. Based on these, you can determine for yourself whether it’s worth the trip.

Valencia’s Attractions

Wondering what to see in Valencia? You should begin your Valencia tour at the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, otherwise known as the City of Arts and Sciences. Additionally, you might enjoy a leisurely stroll around the city center or its numerous squares, or perhaps sit in local pubs to people-watch. This is a city where boredom is virtually impossible given its countless attractions. For relaxation, the beach is always a great option – after all, Valencia is a seaside city.

Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias – The City of Arts and Sciences

Let’s begin by stating that the City of Arts and Sciences is a mainstay on Valencia postcards. This cultural and architectural complex, which also forms a small district of the city, has been recognized as one of Spain’s 12 treasures. Construction commenced in 1996, and the final building was completed in 2009.

The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia extends for nearly two kilometers and is situated on the former bed of the Turia River. It comprises six highly intriguing buildings. While admission to the complex is free, tickets are required for entry into the facilities. This complex, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, was built to foster science and art appreciation. It consists of futuristic buildings designed by Spanish architects Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela, and impresses visitors with its avant-garde architecture.

The first to be built was a distinctive structure, L’Hemisferic, which resembles a giant human eye. Inside, you’ll find a panoramic 3D cinema with a theatre and an impressive screen spanning 900 m².

he Prince Felipe Science Museum, or El Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe, is a must-visit for all science enthusiasts, experiment conductors, and technology explorers. The museum is particularly appealing to children, who can learn about the scientific world through interactive games (as my younger brother excitedly attested).

Next up is L’Umbracle – a scenic viewpoint surrounded by gardens. It beautifully combines lush greenery with modernist sculptures, offering a perfect space for a leisurely stroll and a moment of respite during your complex visit.

Oceanogràfic stands as the largest oceanarium in Europe, and ranks among the world’s largest. It is divided into ten sections, housing more than 500 aquatic species, and its main building is architecturally designed in the shape of a water lily.

The Queen Sofia Palace of Arts, or Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, is a focal point for music and the arts, boasting a large, imposing structure. Encompassing 40,000 square meters, it can accommodate up to 4,000 spectators and houses four halls, each impeccably designed for hosting opera, theater, ballet, or concerts.

The last venue to be constructed is L’Àgora, a covered space in the form of an ellipse, serving as an exhibition venue and sports arena. The City of Arts and Sciences is indeed a destination you could allocate an entire day to explore, and it would undoubtedly be a day to remember. Even a simple stroll around its exterior proves to be an engaging experience.

La Seu de Valencia – The Gothic Cathedral of Valencia

The Valencia Cathedral stands as one of the most intriguing religious edifices in the city. Originating from the 13th century, this monument blends various architectural styles including Romanesque, Gothic, and Neoclassical, resulting in a truly unique appearance. However, it’s not only the breathtaking architecture that draws tourists and devotees to this cathedral, but also the mystery of the Holy Grail.

The Holy Grail in question is one of the invaluable relics that stirs up much debate and polarizing views. According to the Church and many related authorities, this temple is believed to house the renowned chalice from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper. Naturally, this historic lore positively impacts the city’s promotion and the number of tourists visiting Valencia. As to the veracity of this claim, that’s for you to decide.

Plaza de la Reina and Other Major City Squares

Valencia is celebrated for its multitude of plazas or squares. Typically rich in tree cover and greenery, these squares serve as urban oases, providing shade on hot days. They are made up of intricate networks of paths and promenades leading to delightful squares and courtyards, making them perfect for strolling and unwinding.

One of the most well-known and sizeable squares in Valencia is Plaza de la Reina, or “Queen’s Square,” nestled within the Old Town. This exceptionally charming part of the city boasts delightful restaurants offering traditional tapas, Valencian paella, and other dishes native to the Valencia region. It’s definitely worth pausing here for lunch, a beverage, or a glass of wine to fully soak in the city’s ambiance.

Not far from Plaza de la Reina, you’ll find the Round Square, or Plaza Redonda. This quaint, circular square possesses a unique charm, with a fountain dating back to 1850 at its center. The square is enveloped by a variety of shops selling haberdashery, lace, local artisans’ crafts, and souvenirs.

Plaza Lope de Vega is another square situated near the Round Square. This location merits a visit due to a quite intriguing sight. Located in Plaza Lope de Vega is the narrowest building in Europe. The structure, which measures only 107 cm in width, is a townhouse. Today, it accommodates the La Estrecha bar, but it once served as a residential building.

Another noteworthy location is Plaça de la Mare de Déu. Centrally positioned in this square is the Fountain del Turia, dedicated to Neptune. This square lies adjacent to the renowned Gothic cathedral.

Mercado Central – The City Market in Valencia

This historical market, one of the oldest in Europe, immediately impresses with its distinctive architecture. It’s housed within a large modernist building and offers a deep dive into local culture and tradition.

At the market, you’ll find an assortment of items ranging from meats to snails, spices to olives, and ceramics. The market is neatly organized and divided into sections. Among other things, there’s a section with freshly caught fish and seafood, sections boasting a vast selection of vibrant fruits and vegetables, and stalls selling tea.

Regrettably, I don’t have a photo of the market to share, but a stroll through the town is also quite engaging:

Turia Gardens – One of the Largest Parks in Spain

Spanning almost 10 km in length, this park follows the former bed of the Turia River. It originates in the old town, where Valencia’s main attractions, central squares, churches, and the cathedral are located.

Historically, the Turia River flowed from the surrounding mountains toward the sea, cutting through the city center. However, in the mid-1950s, heavy rainfall caused the river level to surge significantly, leading it to overflow its banks and subsequently flood central Valencia, resulting in extensive damage.

This incident triggered a project to divert the river to another course, and in the drained old riverbed, the magnificent Turia Gardens were established.

Occupying 110 hectares in the city’s heart, the park abounds with charming paths, gardens, bridges, as well as sports facilities and other attractions. It undoubtedly ranks among the most intriguing parks in Europe and provides an ideal setting for walking and cycling.

Among other landmarks, the park houses the Palau de la Música de València, a massive 70-meter statue of Gulliver that visitors can climb, as well as the historic San Jose, Trinidad, and Serranos bridges. By traversing the grottos, one can journey from central Valencia to the City of Arts and Sciences itself.

La Albufera – Unique Wetlands

Just 10 km from Valencia lies a beautiful lagoon, separated from the sea by a strip of land, forming a captivating wetland. This place is rich in unique flora and fauna, presenting an entirely fresh portrayal of Mediterranean shores.

These wetlands serve as a home to thousands of birds, offering them an ideal nesting area. Thus, it’s best to visit this location in the spring or summer when you can observe the return of migratory birds and enjoy the comfortable temperature.

The splendor of this site is further enhanced by the magnificent sunrises and sunsets. Here, one can witness a remarkable display of light, with the setting sun’s rays over La Albufera, reflecting on the water, creating a memorable, colorful spectacle.

You can explore the wetlands either by hiking along historical trails or following an interesting botanical route. Alternatively, you can traverse the lagoon by boat, taking a picturesque cruise through this extraordinary ecosystem.

Beaches in Valencia

Being a coastal city, Valencia allows for a leisurely break from sightseeing with a visit to the beach. With a wide array of beaches to choose from, it’s worthwhile to explore which one suits your preferences best. You can opt between city beaches and those further afield. These include:

Lonja de la Seda – Historic Silk Exchange

The Valencia Silk Exchange, inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1996, is regarded as one of Europe’s most precious medieval civil monuments. A visit to this site provides insight into Valencia’s dynamic growth during the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

Constructed between 1482 and 1533, the building stands as a prime example of Valencian Gothic architecture. The Silk Exchange, with its rich history and impressive architecture, ranks among Valencia’s most significant attractions.

Fallas de Valencia – The Festival of Fire

The Fallas de Valencia, the most significant celebration for the city’s residents, also serves as an excellent tourist attraction. Commemorated in March in honor of Saint Joseph, this festival is an important religious event and local tradition.

The festival’s central attractions are the statues and installations known as Fallas and Ninots, which are dispersed throughout the city. As tradition dictates, these statues are set ablaze, or even filled with firecrackers to explode, when the celebration draws to a close. Valencia then hosts numerous traditional events, concerts, exhibitions, and parades, all accentuated by impressive fireworks displays.

The festival’s main attractions occur from March 15th to 19th, although some events commence as early as the end of February. The Fallas de Valencia Festival has been declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site.

Where to Eat in Valencia?

As a paradise for Spanish cuisine enthusiasts, Valencia offers a plethora of opportunities to sample various regional dishes, such as paella valenciana. The city, being a large one, is teeming with restaurants and pubs spanning a broad price range. Whether you’re looking for an expensive, exclusive dining experience or an affordable meal, you’re sure to find it here.

Valencian cuisine is a sensory feast, an explosion of flavors, aromas, and colors. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to see and taste an array of culinary delights.

Where have I dined in Valencia, and where do I recommend?

✓ Restaurante Di Fredo: This is where we savored gazpacho soup and paella Valenciana. Delicious food and reasonable prices.

✓ Restaurante da Antonella: They serve superb pizza and sangria, with a great selection.

✓ Restaurante Italiano – Pizzería – Ris8tto: Although good, in my opinion, da Antonella offers tastier fare.

Visiting the local market is also a good idea, as it’s encircled by a myriad of shops, bars, and cafes. It’s an excellent spot for dining while getting an authentic taste of city life in Valencia.

Accommodation in Valencia

In Valencia, the options for accommodation are truly diverse. Despite the broad range of choices, prices in this part of Spain can become quite high if you’re making last-minute arrangements. Thus, it’s better to plan your stay in advance. Hotels, hostels, bed & breakfasts, apartments, and houses are all available. So, if you’re working within a tight budget, make sure to review your options for accommodation in Valencia before making your booking. Alternatively, you might consider staying in the surrounding area, which is equally delightful.

Is Valencia Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! Valencia boasts a myriad of attractions – too many to encompass in a brief post. The journey through the city should ideally start with the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, also known as the City of Arts and Sciences. From there, you can discover the city’s historic gems in the Old Town, explore the bustling market, and stroll down its atmospheric streets.

Valencia is a radiant, vibrant city with an abundance of things to see and do. It’s among those Spanish cities brimming with attractions and intriguing spots to explore at your leisure. Personally, I found that my own visit merely scratched the surface of what Valencia has to offer, and I know there’s much more for me to see and experience upon my return. So, bear in mind that my guide is simply a starting point for discovering the delights of this city.

Things to Do in Benidorm: Top Sights and Experiences

Benidorm, a captivating city situated on the Costa Blanca, may not be the capital of the region, but it certainly ranks among Spain’s most intriguing cities. But why? Yes, it’s perfectly located with beach access and is enveloped by mountains on the other side. However, it’s the unique ambience of the world’s most densely built-up city that truly distinguishes it. Though you’re still technically on the Costa Blanca, being in Benidorm gives a feeling of stepping into an entirely different realm – a city that unexpectedly offers tourists a myriad of entertainment options. From tourist attractions to exceptional food and hospitality, one could argue it has everything a visitor might need.

Nevertheless, Benidorm does have its share of critics who prefer to avoid large resorts. Some even label it “the world’s ugliest city.” Yet, I must say, even though I’m not overly fond of resorts, I believe Benidorm is definitely worth a visit. I hope my guide will serve as a comprehensive introduction to exploring this Spanish coastline.

Things to do in Benidorm

Benidorm, a quintessential holiday destination, was a simple fishing village up until the 1960s. Now, it holds the distinction of being the most densely built-up city worldwide, boasting over 340 tall buildings (each having more than 12 stories). The city’s tallest skyscraper, the Intempo, stands at a staggering 202.5 meters high and consists of 49 stories.

In Benidorm, you can take a leisurely stroll along the pristine beach or the bustling promenade, and marvel at the vistas from the city’s numerous viewpoints. Also, don’t miss out on sampling traditional Spanish cuisine at one of the many local restaurants or trying your luck at the casino.

Personally, I have a penchant for viewpoints, and Benidorm offers a plentiful array of them.

Benidorm – A Guide to Scenic Viewpoints

Benidorm is an idyllic location for those who relish breathtaking views. From here, you can appreciate panoramic vistas of the mountains and the sea. The city’s skyline and skyscrapers are strikingly visible from various vantage points, making it an excellent destination for photography enthusiasts.

But which viewpoints are worth your time?

Cala Almadraba: This lesser-known viewpoint is a bit out of the way, making it best accessed by car.
Balcón del Mediterráneo: Also known as the Mediterranean Balcony, this is the most popular viewpoint in the city (I will delve more into it below).
Mirador de la Ermita Virgen del Mar: This is my personal favorite viewpoint in Benidorm! It offers splendid views, is generally less crowded, and in my opinion, is the best spot for photographers.

Balcón del Mediterráneo or Mediterranean Balcony

The aforementioned Mediterranean Balcony is undeniably the city’s most frequented vantage point. Situated right on the Platja de Ponent beach, it offers stunning views of the city from two sides and overlooks two beaches. The balcony is perched on a cliff, or more accurately, on the ruins of a castle, making it an utterly Instagram-worthy locale that draws considerable crowds (I visited Benidorm twice and was surprised by the amount of people even in January!). If you’re aiming for captivating photos, it’s advisable to get there early in the morning.

And after you’ve snapped your shots, don’t forget to indulge in some obligatory beachcombing!”

Platja de Ponent – Benidorm’s TOP Beach

Located in the northern part of the city, Platja de Ponent is one of Benidorm’s two primary beaches, the other being Levante. Ponent is celebrated for its picturesque views, crystal-clear water, and gently sloping shoreline. It boasts a commendable infrastructure featuring an attractive promenade, bars, and shops. In high season, it teems with visitors and looks picture-perfect from its viewpoints.

Platja de Llevant

On the flip side of the Mediterranean Balcony, you’ll find the expansive sandy beach of Platja de Llevant. Its characteristics echo those of Ponent with its mild descent and turquoise blue water. The two beaches are only separated by the aforementioned balcony, so it’s quite convenient to visit both and decide which one you prefer.

Benidorm is an excellent hub for water sports. From swimming, surfing, and snorkeling to simply lounging and sunbathing, there’s something for everyone. You can also partake in kayaking, cycling, or water skiing. If you’re in search of a destination where you can indulge in the delights of the Mediterranean, look no further.

As the sun sets, Benidorm transforms into an enchanting place for beach walks. You’ll find many tourists who have traveled here specifically to take in the stunning scenery.

But Benidorm’s allure extends beyond the sea, beaches, and viewpoints. The city offers several parks, museums, art galleries, and other attractions. For instance, you can visit the Boca del Calvari Museum, which showcases exhibits that trace the history of the region and hosts intriguing temporary exhibitions.

For the active travelers and cycling enthusiasts, Benidorm is a compelling destination. It’s worth noting that the city’s significant altitude variations can make for a challenging ride, especially during the summer. Your enjoyment of this aspect will depend on your experience and fitness levels, so keep this in mind. Alternatively, consider renting an electric bike for a more relaxed exploration of the area

Benidorm is replete with hotels and guesthouses, and tourists also have the option of renting apartments or houses. Prices peak during high season, but come September, it’s quite feasible to find appealing hotels or apartments for around 200 PLN per night. As of 2022, this represents excellent value. Visiting Benidorm – How to Get There?

One can reach the city by train – a mode of transport my father used when he visited. He wholeheartedly recommends the scenic journey from Alicante to Benidorm by train. Not only does this route offer beautiful views, but it also eliminates any worries about parking. It’s worth noting that during high season, finding parking in Benidorm can be challenging. However, in the low season, parking spots are plentiful.

Moreover, the surrounding area is filled with intriguing places, cities, and towns worth exploring. I’ll link the ones I visited at the end, to help you plan an incredible trip. However, there is one place I have yet to visit, and I truly regret missing it – Parque Natural de la Sierra Helada. This park is reputed to offer stunning views that will leave you breathless!

Exploring Tarragona : A Comprehensive Guide

Located in picturesque southern Catalonia is a city that many may overlook during their trip to Spain. I believe this is a significant oversight, and if you find yourself in and around Barcelona, a trip to Tarragona is definitely worthwhile.

Tarragona is a city where a simple stroll down its streets transforms into a comprehensive history lesson, invoking the spirit of bygone days. Why? Tarragona was founded approximately 500 years before Barcelona and is primarily known for its ancient Roman monuments. What sights await you there? How can you spend your time? I will provide all the details in this post.

What to See in Tarragona?

Tarragona reminds visitors of Italian towns in its atmosphere. While visiting, it’s essential to walk through its picturesque, history-rich streets and spend time on the beautiful, expansive sandy beach.

Make sure to visit the numerous archaeological sites and the city’s old quarter, known as the Foro Provincial de Tarraco. The ancient walls that enclose it, as well as the amphitheater, which offers an incredible view of the Mediterranean Sea, will undoubtedly impress you.

Passeig Arqueologic – the Archaeological Complex in Tarragona

Here, you’ll encounter numerous excavations and remains from ancient Roman times. This invaluable monument was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

This highly esteemed ancient monument complex includes the circus, theater, hippodrome, Roman forums, city walls, and the amphitheater, along with an aqueduct located outside the city. I’ll discuss this further below.

Anfiteatro Romano – the Roman Amphitheater

The Roman amphitheater, situated outside the city walls near the main road and beach, offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and coastline due to its hilltop location. The amphitheater is the city’s primary monument and attracts throngs of tourists annually.

During Roman times, the arena hosted gladiatorial and animal fights, as well as numerous public executions. Remarkably, at its peak, it could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators!

Over the years, the amphitheater has seen a range of uses and destructions, and structures such as a Christian basilica and a cemetery have been erected in its place. These, too, were eventually destroyed, replaced by a Romanesque temple that was demolished in 1915. So, when visiting the amphitheater, you’ll observe remnants from various periods and undoubtedly sense the history of the place.

Aqueduct – Bridge of the Devil

The Pont de les Ferreres, a former Roman aqueduct located 4 kilometers north of Tarragona, is another sight worth seeing. Constructed during Emperor Octavius Augustus’s reign, the fact that it was built nearly 2,000 years ago is impressive in itself.

Originally, the aqueduct stretched for 25 kilometers, supplying water to the city. Now, you’ll only see an 800-meter section of preserved walls.

Why is it known as the Bridge of the Devil? According to a legend, a woman who carried water to the city daily made a pact with the devil. In exchange for her soul, he would help her deliver water to the city. It is said that the devil constructed the aqueduct in a single night, causing the woman to lose her soul irreversibly.

Archaeological Museum

In this archaeological museum, you’ll find one of Spain’s richest collections of artifacts and relics from the Roman and early Christian periods. A statue of the Capalonian she-wolf, a symbol of the Roman Empire, is located at the building’s entrance.

The collection comprises approximately 25,000 exhibits, including fragments of local megalithic structures, Roman sarcophagi, mosaics, vases, sculptures, bronze and bone objects, and historical statues.

The museum, located in Plaza Royal, also houses a library and features various multimedia displays and films depicting interesting stories from the period.

Rambla Nova and the Balcón del Mediterráneo Viewpoint

Rambla Nova may remind you of Barcelona’s famous La Rambla. Indeed, the Rambla Nova is Tarragona’s main promenade. This broad avenue stretches for about 1 kilometer, lined with numerous stores, cafes, and restaurants serving delicious Spanish tapas.

As you stroll down the street, you’ll see 19th-century mansions, Art Nouveau houses, the theater building, and the Fuente del Centenario fountain. Close by, you’ll find the market square and the Chapel of Jesus and Mary, designed by the famed Gaudi.

Along the way, don’t miss the monument depicting the unusual tradition of creating human towers – a composition of 219 bronze figures, known as the Monumento als Castellers.

At the start of the Rambla Nova avenue is the Balcón del Mediterráneo viewpoint, offering a beautiful panorama of the Mediterranean.

Tarragona Cathedral

It’s a must to visit the cathedral, take a leisurely stroll in its lovely gardens, and appreciate the intriguing medieval Catalan Gothic architecture. The cathedral, a landmark that towers over the city, boasts a beautiful façade, elaborate rosettes, and stained glass windows. There’s also an interesting museum inside. In the cloister surrounding the courtyard of the entire temple complex, you’ll find a collection of Romanesque sculptures, including a procession of rats!

A Plaza with a Mural: Plaça dels Sedassos de Tarragona

Tarragona offers a variety of squares for leisurely enjoyment. Notably, the Plaça dels Sedassos features an interesting mural that depicts colorful balconies and people enjoying them. This artwork was created using a decorative art illusion technique known as “trompe l’oeil,” designed to deceive the eye into believing the scenes depicted are real.

Beaches in Tarragona

Like many Spanish resorts, Tarragona boasts beautiful beaches. The Costa Dorada will captivate you with its breathtaking views and lengthy, golden beaches, as well as more secluded ones.

El Miracle Beach, situated near the city, is a long, sandy beach with a gentle shoreline and shimmering blue water. Surrounded by numerous palm and coniferous trees, it provides ample amenities such as deck chairs and umbrellas.

Cala Fonda Beach, located about 6 km north of Tarragona, is a hidden paradise with no shops or restaurants. Here, you’ll be charmed by the beautiful cove, crystal-clear water, and fine golden sand. Often referred to as a miniature Hawaii in Spain, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Tarragona.

Tarragona offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget hostels to atmospheric apartments and hotels with swimming pools and numerous guest amenities. Many interesting lodgings are centrally located, making sightseeing and beach outings in Tarragona easier.

Tarragona is a city easy to fall in love with, boasting historical architecture, monuments from the Roman Empire, picturesque streets and squares, and a Mediterranean atmosphere. It’s an ideal destination for a day trip or a longer stay.

13 Best Things to Do in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city that likely needs no introduction. If you love a cosmopolitan atmosphere, fascinating architecture, proximity to the sea, a plethora of attractions and entertainment, and Spanish cuisine, you won’t need convincing to visit one of the most captivating cities in Europe.

Today, I will showcase the Barcelona that you know and love, as well as less-traveled locales where you can unwind away from throngs of tourists and discover the authentic side of this picturesque city. I invite you to journey with me to sunny Barcelona!

Sagrada Família

This temple is undoubtedly one of the more distinct symbols of the Catalan capital. It is still unfinished, despite its construction continuing for over 130 years! Perhaps it will reach completion in 2026, on the 100th anniversary of the death of its architect and creator, Antonio Gaudi, although some speculate it could be as late as 2030.

Defining the architectural style of the temple is challenging; we see elements of Catalan Modernism, Spanish Gothic, Art Nouveau, and most prominently, Gaudi’s own unique style. Gaudi was fond of incorporating references to nature, including plants and animals.

This UNESCO-listed church is set to become the largest religious building globally. Here, you’re certain to be awed by the richly adorned interior symbolizing Jerusalem, and the façade, with its numerous towers. Intriguing architectural solutions emphasize sun rays piercing the interior, and the immense size of the building is genuinely awe-inspiring.

Admission to the temple is ticketed, and you can purchase tickets at the ticket office at the entrance or online. The entire place is impressive both from the outside and inside. The Sagrada Família elicits strong emotions; some adore it, others abhor it, considering it unattractive. Which group do you belong to? Let me know in the comments on this post.

Park Güell

Located in the north-central part of the city is a large park that Antonio Gaudi designed for his friend Eusebi Güell. However, like the Sagrada Família, it was never completed. The site was initially intended to serve as a private space, but the Barcelona authorities purchased it and converted it into a city park.

Today, you can enjoy an array of vegetation intertwined with fascinating architectural elements from Gaudi’s design, including numerous stairways, alleys, and most notably, a spectacular view of the city.

You can also find the world’s most famous bench here, measuring 152 meters in length and adorned with Gaudi’s characteristic colorful mosaics. The park is also home to the house where the renowned architect once lived.

Park Güell is an excellent place for a stroll, where you can sense the city’s artistic spirit. It’s also a fantastic spot for watching sunsets.

Beautiful Townhouses in Barcelona

When visiting Barcelona, you should definitely see the beautiful townhouses, especially those designed by Gaudí, the brilliant architect who embodies the essence of Catalan art and culture. Gaudí gained fame as the creator of modernist works of art in Catalonia.

Gaudí’s four townhouses are:

Casa Vicens
Casa Calvet
Casa Milà
Casa Batlló

Casa Milà and Casa Batlló are two of the most famous townhouses in Barcelona, known for their breathtaking and unique architecture. They are located on Passeig de Gràcia, one of the city’s most exclusive streets.

Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, was built between 1906 and 1912. Looking at it, one gets the impression that the facade of the building seems to flow. The townhouse was made of stone and iron, and its unusual shapes and ornate details make the building extremely photogenic. Take note of the roof of Casa Milà, adorned with unusual chimneys and bay windows.

Casa Batlló, on the other hand, was built between 1904 and 1906. It is stunning with its vibrant colors. Built with a mosaic of glass and ceramics, shaped like waves and featuring brilliant blue tiles, it evokes a story of the sea. ? From the windows of Casa Batlló, you can enjoy the vibrant life on Passeig de Gràcia, and the interiors of the building are equally fascinating.

La Rambla

La Rambla is the primary promenade in the Catalan capital and arguably the most famous street in all of Spain. It has an artistic vibe and is home to plenty of restaurants, cafes, and boutiques.

There are trees along the entire length of the promenade, offering effective shade from the hot Spanish sun. Colors, music, delicious food – La Rambla encapsulates Spain in one place. I highly recommend spending a substantial amount of time here, soaking in the incredible atmosphere.

Interestingly, at the promenade’s end, right on the beach, there is a monument to Christopher Columbus. This commemorates the very spot as the beginning of his voyage. The monument also serves as a vantage point, as you can take an elevator to the top, offering a beautiful view of the city and the coast.

During your walk, consider stopping at La Boqueria market, where colorful stalls offer Spanish tapas, wines, and fresh juices. Be wary of pickpockets here and along the entire length of La Rambla.

This Catalan pedestrian street is one of the most touristy places in all of Spain. Be alert for pickpockets, solicitors, and swindlers who are often encountered here.

Arc de Triomf in Barcelona

The Arc de Triomf, also known as the Triumphal Arch, was constructed as the main entrance to the Exposición Universal de Barcelona in 1888. This impressive structure was designed by architect Josep Vilaseca, and its brick construction and reddish-red color distinguish it from other triumphal arches worldwide. The Arc de Triomf is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

Located on Passeig de Lluís Companys, one of the city’s most picturesque avenues, the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona offers a captivating experience. As you stroll along this promenade, you can admire the beautiful palm trees and historic townhouses that contribute to the unique atmosphere of this part of Barcelona. Visiting during the day or evening is highly recommended, as the brick facades are beautifully illuminated after sunset.

Barri Gòtic – The Gothic Quarter

To the east of bustling La Rambla is the old town, centered around the Barri Gòtic, or Gothic Quarter. Here, a unique atmosphere pervades, and you can lose yourself in a labyrinth of narrow streets, visit the history museum, admire the Gothic architecture, and relax in Plaça del Rei square.

The centerpiece of the Gothic Quarter is the Cathedral of San Eulalia, which is also worth visiting to appreciate its Gothic architecture. Don’t be surprised to find 13 live white geese; they inhabit this temple complex to honor Saint Eulalia, who was a goose herder.

In addition to the cathedral’s magnificent main building, you can also access its roof, visit the museum – the Chapter Hall, or the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Barcelona Cathedral is often the starting point of many tours, a location you can’t miss during your stay in this city. However, beware of pickpockets here as well.

Eixample – Downtown Barcelona

Eixample translates to ‘extension’ in Catalan, representing the new part of the city that emerged alongside the old town. From a bird’s eye view, Eixample resembles a meticulously planned checkerboard or grid, designed by engineer Ildefonso Cerdá Suñera. The famous Gaudi also contributed to its construction. The townhouses form symmetrical squares, and each is almost the same size. It’s a very thought-out and architecturally orderly space.

A leisurely walk in this district is well worth it, enjoying the hospitality of the numerous pubs, dining on tapas, and sipping wine. The famous Sagrada Família, described above, is located in this neighborhood.

During your stroll, I urge you to visit the historic hospital building – Hospital de Sant Pau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, amid the plethora of remarkable townhouses, ensure you find the unique ones designed by Gaudi – Casa Batllo with its fish scales and Casa Mila with its wavy facade.

Montjuïc Hill

Montjuïc Hill is a complex of parks, gardens, and buildings where you could spend an entire day. Notable attractions here include the famous dancing fountains, the Olympic Stadium, and the National Palace. The hill’s most characteristic building is the centuries-old Montjuïc Castle, which offers tourists a breathtaking view of the city. While the castle’s courtyards and walls are worth a visit, the stunning panorama will likely leave the most lasting impression. You can access the hill via two railroads: the cable car (Aeri del Port) and the gondola train (Telefèric de Montjuïc), which is an attraction in itself.

La Barceloneta

La Barceloneta is the port district of the city. It’s easily recognizable by the distinct, sail-like W Barcelona skyscraper that houses a hotel, a restaurant, and the Eclipse club, which offers a beautiful view from the 26th floor.

The district’s main attraction is the Sant Sebastià beach, popular among tourists and water sports enthusiasts. Here, you’ll also see elegant yachts and numerous seafood restaurants serving various tapas. Strolling along the palm-lined promenade, you can take the cable car up to Montjuïc Hill.

Parc de la Ciutadella

Parc de la Ciutadella is the green heart of Barcelona. When walking through the park, you can admire the exotic trees and stroll along romantic alleys while discovering fascinating sites like the Catalan Parliament and the Castillo de los Tres Dragones. Additionally, there is a waterfall located in the central part of the park. Parc de la Ciutadella offers the perfect setting to relax or enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature. It also serves as an excellent starting point for further exploration of Barcelona.

Camp Nou

Camp Nou, the largest stadium in Europe and one of the largest in the world, needs little introduction. With a seating capacity of 100,000, this renowned arena is home to the famous FC Barcelona.

Football fans are not only drawn to the stadium’s grandeur but also to the club museum. Visitors can even explore the players’ locker rooms, walk through the tunnel leading to the pitch, or sit in the VIP box. There’s also a shop selling merchandise for FC Barcelona’s most ardent supporters.

Plaça de Catalunya – Catalan Square

Plaça de Catalunya is a perfect starting point for your city tour. From this spacious square, you can easily reach the Barri Gòtic, the old town, or the Eixample district. It’s also one of the city’s major transportation hubs, providing access to almost all key points on the sightseeing map.

The buildings surrounding the square host various hotels, stores, and the headquarters of important financial institutions. This distinctive square in the city’s heart is an ideal spot to relax by the fountains, admire the greenery and numerous sculptures, before strolling down La Rambla.

Barcelona off the beaten track – Hospitalet de Llobregat

While Hospitalet de Llobregat falls within the boundaries of the Barcelona metropolitan complex, it is considered a separate city. It’s an excellent place to visit if you wish to experience Spain away from the tourist crowds or are looking for a cheaper base for exploring Catalonia.

However, this doesn’t mean it lacks attractions. The city is home to an interesting cultural center, the historic Ermita de Santa María de Bellvitge temple built in the Romanesque style, a beautiful beach, shopping centers, museums, markets, and green parks. It offers a perfect space to catch your breath while sightseeing.

In the Catalan capital, you can also visit attractions such as Parc De La Ciutadella, museums like the Picasso and MNAC, suburbs such as El Raval, the Catalan Music Palace, Tibidabo Hill, and the Sacred Heart Church.

Where to stay in Barcelona?

Barcelona offers a wide range of accommodations. Choices include high-end hotels with swimming pools and excellent restaurants, apartments by the beach or in the heart of key districts, as well as numerous hostels.

However, accommodation prices are not among the lowest. What and where to eat in Barcelona?

In Spain and Barcelona, there’s more to the cuisine than just paella. I recommend trying crispy potatoes accompanied by hot sauce – patatas bravas, ham croquettes – croquetas de jamón, fried squid, or small green Padrón peppers. You can even eat snails here. For dessert, I suggest the delicious churros with chocolate!

One of the most recommended restaurants is Bodega La Puntual, where you can enjoy beautifully served Spanish tapas. The restaurant itself boasts an intriguing atmosphere with brick walls and a vintage elevator shaft inside.

If you’ve had your fill of Spanish food, don’t worry – PolkaBar is a restaurant serving Polish dishes that is beloved by Barcelona residents. You can find it at Carrer de Cabestany 7.

However, I encourage you to explore and savor this unique cuisine. While strolling through Barcelona’s streets, treat yourself to delicious ice cream or just churros.

Cami de Ronda: Exploring Picturesque Trails on the Costa Brava

The Cami de Ronda, a gem of the Costa Brava, unquestionably ranks among my favorite places in the region. It’s a charming walking path that winds along the shore. However, to call the Cami de Ronda a path is an understatement. The Cami de Ronda trail spans the length of the entire coastline, but there’s more to it than that.

If you’re planning a trip to the Costa Brava, you can’t miss this attraction! The trail takes you to a world of picturesque cliffs, coves, and equally beautiful towns. More precisely, it connects a multitude of small towns and villages on this coast, such as Calella de Palafrugell, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Tossa de Mar, or Lloret de Mar.

As a die-hard fan of routes with breathtaking views, I think this is one of the best places I’ve had the privilege to see. Besides being beautiful, I also felt really safe there.

In this post, I’ll talk about the Cami de Ronda trail – while walking, you can not only enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean but also discover the region’s many attractions.

Cami de Ronda – history

Camí de Ronda is a coastal path along the rugged Costa Brava coastline. This coastal path has been in use for more than 1,000 years. Initially, it was a path used by fishermen and sailors as a route to help them get home in case of trouble, such as being able to return to their ports when they were shipwrecked or had to leave their boat in a sheltered place to escape a storm.

Only later did it become a path that connected the various villages, beaches, and bays along the Costa Brava (source: Spanish Guide to Palamos). In the twentieth century, on the other hand, the Spanish Guard used it to patrol the coast, on the lookout for contraband and illegal activities (they patrolled the sea, for example, to combat smuggling). Illegal traffic consisted primarily of tobacco; penicillin, coffee, sugar, pepper, or chocolate were also among the smuggled goods. Hence its current name: “Camí de Ronda” – “Circular Path.”

What to know about the Cami de Ronda?

The trail is approximately 200 kilometers long. You can explore the entirety of this trail, or choose sections of a chosen level of difficulty and length, making it an excellent choice for the whole family, as well as for advanced travelers. I myself walked several dozen kilometers, spreading it out over several days.

Keep in mind that the path has some steep sections, so make sure you have the right footwear and think about your physical capabilities before setting out. It is important to use the built paths, not to go off the trail on the closed parts (there are dangerous moments), not to litter, and to respect the local flora and fauna.

The trail is not designed for cycling, but there are parallel trails that are wide and safe for cyclists nearby.

Where does the trail lead? Which route to take?

The Cami de Ronda is a paradise for hikers and hiking enthusiasts. It is divided into two main trails:

LINEAR CAMÍ DE RONDA (linear, due to its location) a 43-kilometer route (starts in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and ends in Begur).
CIRCULAR CAMÍ DE RONDA (circular) with a length of 140 km (begins and ends in the town of Girona).

I have walked many kilometers of this scenic route along the coast, and I can say that each section is beautiful and unique Walking along the trail, you pass charming coves, such as Cala Pola or Cala Sa Conca, which are stunning with crystal clear water and golden sand. It is worth stopping for a while to relax or swim in these picturesque places. Therefore, remember to bring a bathing suit, a head covering, and plenty of water!

As for the circular part of the route, this trail is designed to be walked in eight days, so it is especially dedicated to long-distance walkers. It passes through the Les Gavarres range, walks along the Costa Brava coast, and then returns to Girona via l’Empordanet and the summit of Santuari dels Àngels. In the chapel on this peak, painter Salvador Dalí married his wife Gala.

The surroundings of St. Feliu de Guíxols:

Starting from the town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, we traverse the coast passing through Bay del Molí, Maset Bay, and Sant Pol beach. The next stage is S’Agaró, where the Camí de Ronda path was transformed into a modern promenade planned by architect Rafel Masó in 1916. The route continues towards Sa Conca beach and then, circling the mouth of the Ridaura River, arrives at Platja d’Aro. On this stretch, I recommend taking a look at the Cap Roig botanical garden.

The surroundings of Palamos

We take off from Platja d’Aro. From this charming village, we walk along the promenade towards Sant Antoni de Calonge. The next part of the route is breathtaking, as the Camí de Ronda path turns into a narrow trail that winds between impressive cliffs, coves, and beaches. In contrast, the stretch from Sant Antoni de Calonge to Palamós is a pleasant, easy-to-walk promenade along the calm sea.

Camino de Ronda

The Camino de Ronda is a long-distance route that runs along the entire coastline of the Costa Brava. It is marked with the number GR 92, in commemoration of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It begins in Portbou, near the border with France, and ends in Blanes. The GR92 extends even farther beyond the Costa Brava to the south.

Here it is worth walking the path in the Tossa de Mar/Lloret de Mar area; the views are truly amazing.
