If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland and seeking lesser-known yet charming destinations, you’ve come to the right place! In this post, I’ll unveil Switzerland’s hidden gems—delightful places perfect for an idyllic vacation. 

During my first visit to Switzerland, I explored cities, while on my most recent trip, I uncovered picturesque villages and tiny towns in the cantons of Thurgau, Appenzell, and Valais. 

Without further ado, let’s dive into this post about Switzerland’s lesser-known attractions. And, please, do share your favorite village at the end! 

Ernen 

During my journey, Ernen, a picturesque village nestled in the canton of Valais, left an indelible impression on me. Surrounded by majestic mountain vistas, Ernen stands out as my top pick for an idyllic vacation in Switzerland. Even on cloudy or rainy days, it retains a mystical and enchanting charm. It’s worth noting that I visited Ernen in May, and one can expect sunny weather during the summer months. ? 

One of the village’s primary attractions, aside from the breathtaking scenery, is its immaculately preserved town center. The labyrinthine narrow streets lined with wooden houses create an incredibly captivating atmosphere. 

Here’s a useful tip: I stayed at the Alpenblick Hotel, and the views from there were nothing short of a dream come true. 

For dining options, I highly recommend the Hotel Bergland-Hof for lunch or dinner. 

Leuk 

When I shared an Instagram post featuring all the places mentioned in this post, it was Leuk that garnered the most admiration. And it’s no wonder why—Leuk is renowned for its panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, making it an irresistible destination for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike. 

Nestled in the German-speaking part of the Valais canton, Leuk is a picturesque town celebrated for its meticulously preserved medieval architecture. There’s an abundance of attractions here, including a 13th-century castle and the intriguing Skull Chapel. From Leuk, you can revel in the breathtaking vistas of the Rhone Valley and the majestic Alps. Additionally, you have the opportunity to savor wines from local vineyards. Close by, a popular thermal spa beckons those in search of rejuvenation. 

Saillon 

Nestled in the canton of Valais, Saillon is a picturesque village celebrated for its hot springs and exceptional vineyards. Yet, there’s much more to discover here. Saillon boasts a 12th-century castle that gracefully commands the village’s skyline. Moreover, the village offers excellent trekking opportunities, so be sure to bring along sturdy and reliable footwear. If you appreciate atmospheric towns and are up for some ascent, Saillon is an ideal destination for you. 

Here’s an intriguing fact: Saillon is home to the world’s smallest vineyard, owned by none other than the Dalai Lama. 

Steckborn 

Steckborn, situated in the canton of Thurgau on the shores of Lake Constance, is an excellent choice for a summer retreat. One of its standout attractions is the medieval old town, characterized by its charming half-timbered houses. You can still catch glimpses of the remnants of the ancient city wall that once encircled the old town. It comes as no surprise that parts of the city are under heritage protection. 

Furthermore, I recommend embarking on a boat cruise to Diessenhofen, for instance. On the ship, you have the option to enjoy refreshing drinks, all while taking in the breathtaking views from this unique vantage point. The landscape unfolds before you, revealing Swiss towns intertwined with a picturesque, almost untamed coastline. 

During my stay in Steckborn, I lodged at the See und Park Hotel Feldbach. They also boast excellent restaurants serving delectable cuisine. Don’t miss the chance to try the dessert “Oops, I Dropped the Blumentopf”—it’s simply brilliant! 

Diessenhofen 

I reached Diessenhofen by boat from Steckborn, another village located nearby in the canton of Thurgau. Diessenhofen is a medieval village brimming with historic charm, tracing its origins back to the 12th century. The best way to uncover its unique qualities is by strolling through the labyrinthine streets of the old town. Among the highlights is the St. Lawrence Church, adorned with a stunning Baroque altar. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the local museum as well. 

Here’s an interesting tidbit: Diessenhofen is situated right on the border with Germany. Therefore, make sure to take a leisurely walk across the historic bridge—by doing so, you can literally check off a visit to another country! ? 

For a delightful dinner experience, I highly recommend the Unterhof restaurant, known for its spectacular sunset views and delectable cuisine. 

Salenstein 

Nestled in the canton of Thurgau along the shores of Lake Constance, the village of Salenstein boasts a unique attraction—Arenenberg Castle. This historical site holds particular significance as it was the childhood home of Queen Hortense, the mother of Napoleon III. Today, it serves as a museum dedicated to the illustrious Bonaparte family. 

If you find yourself in the vicinity, this is an excursion well worth your time. Napoleon’s former residence is a marvel, and the panoramic views of Lake Constance from the castle are nothing short of breathtaking. In my opinion, it’s a must-visit in the area. 

For a delightful lunch or dessert, I recommend the Bistro Louis Napoleon, conveniently located right next to the museum. 

Appenzel 

Situated in the eastern part of Switzerland, Appenzell holds the distinction of being the capital of the Appenzell Innerrhoden canton. This village is renowned for its well-preserved traditional Swiss architecture, with its iconic colorful houses impeccably maintained. Furthermore, Appenzell is celebrated for its scenic landscapes, extensive hiking trails, and local cuisine, which encompasses both food and beverages. 

Beyond its natural allure, Appenzell stands out as a remarkable village steeped in history and culture. It is famously known for the tradition of the Landsgemeinde—an open assembly of citizens where decisions are still made by raising one’s hand, eschewing the use of paper ballots. 

During my visit, I had the privilege of staying in the heart of Appenzell, right by the renowned square where these unique elections are conducted. You can discover the Romantik Hotel Appenzell, bearing its charming name, through this link. 

What to Explore in Switzerland? 

While Switzerland is often synonymous with mountains for many, this country boasts a rich tapestry of offerings that extend from its lakes and rivers to its vibrant cities, charming towns, and quaint villages. My journey through Switzerland was dedicated to uncovering its hidden gems, the picturesque villages that encapsulate the cultural and architectural diversity within the three cantons.

The town of Gruyères is situated in the heart of the Alps, within the canton of Freiburg. It stands as one of Switzerland’s most popular destinations, owing its fame to the renowned cheese bearing the same name, a splendid castle, and various other attractions, which I will delve into in this post.

Before embarking on your visit to Gruyères, it’s valuable to acquaint yourself with a few intriguing facts. Firstly, the name “Gruyères” likely originates from the crane bird. According to legend, Gruerius, the fabled founder of Gruyères, adopted it as the emblematic creature on the coat of arms. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the Gruyères family held significant influence in the French-speaking region of Switzerland.

Gruyères Castle

Gruyères Castle stands as one of Switzerland’s most magnificent castles, proudly overlooking the town and offering breathtaking panoramic views. Numerous legends and tales are interwoven with both the castle and the town itself. In this post, I will briefly delve into the castle’s origins before introducing you to intriguing attractions within the city.

The history of Gruyères is intimately linked with the Gruyères family. Michel, the final count of Gruyères, declared bankruptcy in 1554. Consequently, the existing castle became the administrative center for the Canton of Freiburg. In 1849, it was put up for sale and subsequently acquired by the Bovy and Balland families, who embarked on an extensive renovation project with the collaboration of numerous renowned artists. In less than a century, in 1938, the Canton of Freiburg repurchased the castle and transformed it into a museum.

A visit to the castle offers a captivating journey through eight centuries of history, encompassing both architecture and culture. I wholeheartedly recommend exploring this site, especially since you can access brochures and guides in Polish, which significantly enhance the tour experience.

The Legend of Gruyères

 The legend of Gruyères recounts a time when the city faced the need for its defense by women. In the absence of men, who were away on expeditions, it fell upon the women to safeguard the castle unaided. This proved to be no easy feat, and in anticipation of an impending attack, they devised a clever strategy: attaching lit torches to the horns of goats. From a distance, this created the illusion of a formidable army, causing the frightened adversaries to flee. Gruyères was thus successfully defended.

Museums in Gruyères

While exploring Gruyères, the castle often takes center stage, but there’s more to this town than meets the eye. Two noteworthy museums await your visit:

1. Tibet Museum
2. HR Giger Museum

These two establishments are distinctly unique and offer entirely different experiences.

Tibet Museum

The Tibet Museum primarily serves as an art museum, but it offers a truly unique and captivating atmosphere. The air is filled with the soothing sounds of Buddhist music, setting the tone for a serene visit. The museum’s collection comprises approximately four hundred pieces, most of which were brought here by refugees from Tibet.

Giger’s HR Museum

Prepare to be mesmerized. Giger, the creative genius behind much of the otherworldly ambiance in the movie “Aliens,” has left an indelible mark with his astonishing paintings and artworks. While it may not align with my personal preferences, I cannot deny the sheer appreciation I have for this place. It exudes an extraordinary aura, much like the artist himself.

How to Save Money When Visiting Gruyères?

When touring Switzerland, I opted for the Swiss Travel Pass, a versatile card that not only covers train and public transportation fares but also includes access to boats, select roller coasters, museums, and even castles. Consequently, I enjoyed complimentary (or more accurately, covered by this card) visits to Gruyères Castle and the featured museums. If you’re planning an extensive sightseeing itinerary, this pass might prove to be considerably more economical than purchasing individual tickets. It’s certainly worth recalculating your budget.

Where to Dine in Gruyères?

Gruyères boasts a plethora of dining options, making it a bit challenging to make a choice. During my visit, I dined at Les Remparts, where I indulged in the quintessential Swiss experience – a delectable Swiss fondue. Naturally, fondue here is crafted in the traditional manner, utilizing Gruyère cheese of varying maturation levels and complemented by dry white wine. I wholeheartedly recommend this delightful culinary adventure.

Speaking of the remarkable H.R. Giger and restaurants, you’ll stumble upon an extraordinary pub in Gruyères that is nothing short of spectacular. The decor mirrors that of a museum (as pictured above). Make sure to pay it a visit; it’s conveniently located just across the street from the H.R. Giger Museum.

Overnight in Gruyères

While exploring this enchanting region of Switzerland, I chose to spend my nights in Montreux. However, Gruyères offers a selection of captivating hotels and accommodations for those looking to immerse themselves in the town’s unique atmosphere. Attractions Around Gruyères

For my Gruyères sightseeing adventure, I embarked on a memorable journey from Montreux, specifically opting for the Chocolate Train tour! I wholeheartedly recommend this excursion, often conducted aboard a Belle Époque train (sometimes a panoramic one as well). Personally, I had the pleasure of riding the Belle Époque train, and I must say, the experience was truly remarkable. The train exudes an unmistakable ambiance, with meticulously styled interiors reminiscent of the era.

Returning to the attractions, our journey led us to the Gruyères Cheese Factory, the birthplace of the renowned cheese sharing its name with the town. The factory offers guided tours complete with an audio guide, available in many languages (Polish as well). To top it off, a cheese tasting session is included—a perfect package for cheese enthusiasts.

And since we’re discussing the Chocolate Train, it’s worth mentioning that this tour concludes with a visit to the Chocolate Factory. At the end of the tour, an indulgent tasting session awaits, and it’s unlimited! You can savor as much chocolate as your heart desires. ?

Bern, the charming Swiss city nestled alongside the Aare River, is famous for its stunning views. The city offers numerous attractions and fascinating museums, making it a challenge to decide where to start exploring. It’s interesting to note that while Switzerland doesn’t officially designate a capital, Bern is home to the country’s parliament.

In this post, I’ll list the most popular places to visit during a weekend or vacation in Switzerland. I’ll show you the beauty of Bern and what’s worth seeing there. I hope the photos will illustrate why a trip to this Swiss city is worth considering.

Bern Attractions – Map

Let’s start with the essentials because, let’s face it, without a proper itinerary, navigating can be a real challenge. I’ve put together a map to assist you in navigating the city, planning your routes, and making the most of your trip. How to Get to Bern?

Getting to Bern offers several options. During my Switzerland trip, I primarily relied on train travel, thanks to the Swiss Travel Pass, which conveniently covered most train routes, as well as boat journeys. Additionally, it provided complimentary access to numerous museums and tourist attractions.

By Train: I arrived in Zurich and hopped onto a train directly from the airport to Bern. It’s worth noting that there’s a direct train available approximately every 40 minutes, with some variations depending on the time of day. The train ride from Zurich to Bern typically takes around 1.5 hours.

By Car: While I won’t provide specific car routes, navigation systems can certainly assist better in this regard.

By Plane: Bern boasts an international airport located in the town of Belp, serving the city and offering flight options for travelers.

Bern Attractions – What’s Worth Seeing?

Bern is a city teeming with captivating places to explore, and in my opinion, the city’s main attractions are best experienced on foot. Leading the list of must-see landmarks is undoubtedly the Swiss Parliament building, known as the Bundeshaus. Comprising three interconnected structures blending arcade and neoclassical styles, the Bundeshaus is not only an architectural marvel on the outside but also offers the fascinating opportunity to explore its interior. You can easily book your visit online, and the admission is free. Interestingly, on select days, you can even witness political deliberations in action!

A leisurely stroll through Bern’s Old Town unveils a wealth of points of interest. Among them is the iconic clock tower known as Zytglogge. This tower is especially delightful to visit with children, as three minutes before each hour, instead of the chiming bells, a charming figurine performance takes place. While you can also explore the interior, I personally didn’t have the chance to do so. As you wander along Kramgasse, be sure to admire the picturesque fountains, which make for exceptionally photogenic subjects—I myself have captured more than a dozen photos with them! And while exploring the Old Town, don’t forget to pause by the Town Hall. In the summertime, the Little Rampage, now transformed into a park, offers a delightful spot to take a break from your sightseeing adventures.

My Favorite Spot in Bern – The Rosengarten

The Rosengarten, or rose garden, in Bern stole my heart as my favorite place in the city. This garden exudes an enchanting and idyllic charm that’s truly captivating. To top it off, there’s a delightful restaurant on-site, perfect for indulging in coffee and cake. But what truly makes the Rosengarten extraordinary is the unparalleled view it offers of the city skyline. Perched atop a hill, the vistas from here are nothing short of stunning.

So, how can you make your way to the Rosengarten? First and foremost, you can take a leisurely stroll on foot. As you cross the Nydeggbrücke bridge, keep an eye out for the former Lindt chocolate factory—it’s a memorable landmark! Alternatively, if you prefer to avoid the uphill climb, you can hop on bus 10 heading towards Ostermundigen; it conveniently departs directly from beneath the Bärengraben. You can also catch the bus to Rosengarten from the train station.

Bärengraben

Bern, a city renowned for its symbol—the bear—whose legend is deeply ingrained in its identity. In Bern, we can do more than just admire bears in photos or artwork; we can witness them firsthand. Hence, another undeniable attraction in Bern is the Bärengraben, where we can observe these majestic creatures as they go about their activities, whether it’s sleeping, strolling, or even taking a refreshing bath (not in the river, of course!). For a closer encounter, you can observe them from the second, older enclosure.

Exploring the Hidden Gems of Bern

Bern, much like any city, harbors several hidden gems and local favorites, known mostly to the city’s residents. While I’m not a Bern local myself, I had the pleasure of meeting Blanca, a Bern resident, who introduced me to some of these captivating spots. So, what are the intriguing places to discover in Bern, and what experiences should you consider?

Grand Casino Bern Observation Deck: Make sure to visit the observation deck at the Grand Casino Bern. The panoramic view is nothing short of breathtaking, and the best part is, you’ll find few tourists here. It’s the perfect locale for witnessing a stunning sunset.

Kornhauskeller: Another noteworthy destination is the Kornhauskeller, a stunning restaurant that boasts remarkable architecture. Even if it’s not mealtime, you can still get a sneak peek of its beautiful vaulted interiors.

Parliament Square: If you’re traveling with children, a visit to Parliament Square is a must. In the summer, kids can frolic in the fountains, making it a delightful stop for families. Interestingly, there are 26 fountains in total, symbolizing the 26 cantons of Switzerland.

What to Do in Bern?

I’m certainly not the only one who adores Bern for its Aare River, which boasts an extraordinary turquoise color. You can take a refreshing swim in it by bringing along a special buoy.

Don’t forget to enjoy a cup of coffee at the aforementioned Rosengarten, which offers an amazing view of the city.

For an evening drink with the sun setting, I recommend heading to the Münsterplattform.

If you’re in search of picturesque viewpoints, in addition to the rose garden, the Grand Casino Bern, and the Münsterplattform, I suggest visiting the terrace of the Parliament. In my opinion, the Parliament is one of the most picturesque places in Bern. Additionally, consider ascending the Great Rampart, conveniently located right next to the train station. The view from this point is entirely unique compared to the others, and it also holds a longer history, given that it served as a formidable fortification in the city’s past.

Museums in Bern

After you’ve explored Bern on foot, it’s time to dive into its rich museum scene. Personally, I had the pleasure of visiting the Einstein Museum and the Historical Museum, both housed in the same building, and I must say, it’s an experience worth your while. In Bern, you can immerse yourself in the history of Albert Einstein and his family. If your curiosity is still piqued after the museum visit, you can even explore his apartment in the Old Town, where he once lived.

But this is just the beginning. Thanks to the Swiss Travel Pass, you have access to a plethora of museums, and I’ll point out some noteworthy ones for you:

During my solo adventure, I sought a location near the Old Town and conveniently close to Bern’s train station. This led me to choose the Hotel National Bern, where I paid 100 Swiss francs for a night in 2021, and breakfast was included. The interior was clean and welcoming, and I was warmly received by Ms. Malwina at the reception desk.

Switzerland, though not vast in size, boasts an abundance of fascinating destinations. How Long to Spend in Bern?

Appenzell is a picturesque village situated in the eastern part of Switzerland, within a canton named Appenzell Innerrhoden. It’s renowned for its rolling hills and pastures populated by cows. A spot not overwhelmed by tourists, it’s situated somewhat off the beaten track. Today, I’ll discuss what makes Appenzell noteworthy, highlight fascinating facts about it, suggest places to visit, and introduce flavors to try.

Appenzell – Fascinating Facts

There’s much to discuss about Appenzell. I undertook two guided tours (also available in English), which I wholeheartedly recommend! This provides the opportunity to converse with a local, ask questions about things that pique your interest, and form new acquaintances. Here, I’ll outline some of the most surprising customs and stories associated with this place.

Appenzell is known for its tradition of Landsgemeinde, an open assembly of citizens where local issues are decided. Votes aren’t cast on paper, but instead, one votes by raising one’s hand in the air. This is an ancient democratic custom that has persisted to the present day. It’s currently practiced in only two places in Switzerland, Appenzell included.

Another unexpected fact pertains to women’s rights. Appenzell Innerrhoden was the last canton in Switzerland to grant women the right to vote at the local level. This milestone was achieved only in 1991, following a national intervention. Intriguingly, until that time, women were tasked with monitoring the voting process.

Appenzell is among the places in Switzerland where a traditional Alpine festival is celebrated, marking the event of bringing cows down from the mountains for the winter. The cows are adorned with decorations, making for interesting parades featuring music and traditional food.

Appenzell Attractions

Let’s begin by clarifying that Appenzell may seem like a village to some and a small town to others. With a population just under 6,000, it may appear minuscule. Nevertheless, irrespective of the label, Appenzell isn’t just a place, it’s an experience. To truly grasp its essence, one must try the local cuisine, listen to the music, and partake in local events. This locale boasts a multi-generational tradition that’s truly remarkable in the 21st century.

My tour started at the Appenzell Museum. Nestled in the town center, this museum offers a comprehensive look into the region’s history and culture. Exhibitions cover topics from traditional costumes and embroidery to music and art.

Interestingly, the historical costumes displayed in the photos are still worn today in Appenzell. Passed down from generation to generation, the cost of such attire is 20,000 francs today. They are reserved for significant events, particularly religious ones. This part of Switzerland predominantly practices Catholicism, so if you visit Appenzell during Corpus Christi, you might witness these uniquely dressed individuals.

A tour of the old town is a must when visiting Appenzell. The old town is exceedingly charming, with its colorful, painted buildings constructed after a fire in 1560.

The first building to receive this distinctive paint job was the pharmacy. It features painted herbs that were used to treat people in those times. These charming houses have been meticulously maintained and restored over the years, allowing them to preserve their original character.

As a result, a leisurely stroll will afford views of colorful house facades at every turn. These drawings often depict scenes from everyday life, characteristic of the buildings or display folklore motifs. Each building tells a different story, contributing to the charm of the place.

As mentioned earlier, Appenzell also offers a chance to discover local culture and traditions. Here, you can sample traditional Swiss disheslike fondue or raclette, as well as local specialties like Appenzeller cheese, a liquor bearing the same name, and wines.

However, the most popular attractions are undoubtedly the mountains! Most tourists come here for this very reason. Appenzell is a haven for hikers. There are numerous well-marked hiking trails, with Mount Säntis – the highest peak in the area – being the most popular. You can either hike to its summit or use the cable car.

Accommodation in Appenzell

Despite being a small village, Appenzell boasts a fair number of accommodations. However, these are often booked well in advance during the peak season or major events.

Restaurants in Appenzell

As I mentioned, Appenzell is famous for its exceptional cheese, fine wines, and the iconic herbal liquor (I love the herbal taste, so I savored it).

If you want to sample the local cuisine, I recommend the restaurant at the Romantik Hotel. Here’s what I enjoyed for lunch and dinner:

• Pancake soup (broth)
• Melon with dried ham
• Asparagus, perch with hollandaise sauce, and potatoes (perch in German is “eglifilets”)
• Veal in cream and mushroom sauce with pasta and rösti, accompanied by vegetables

I should note that my visit to Appenzell coincided with the asparagus season, so I savored it at every opportunity. I highly recommend giving it a try.

What else is worth tasting? Local baked goods with the famous cheese, such as those from the Böhli bakery. You can also purchase cakes and cookies there, for instance, with a ginger flavor (they are particularly popular in this area). The family-owned Chäs Sutter Käse store is an excellent place to stock up on cheese.

In conclusion, Appenzell is a place that marries the charm and beauty of traditional Swiss architecture with a rich culture and history. It’s the perfect destination for those who value contact with nature, authenticity, and the tranquility offered by small towns.

The French-speaking part of Switzerland is charming. Montreux is a well-known resort with a promenade that stretches for miles. I spent a few days in this city and was amazed by the views: mountains, a lake, plus a castle and amazing nature. In my opinion, Montreux is a great place to go, because practically within the city you have all this at your fingertips.

In this post I will tell you what is worth to do and see at this Swiss city. Also I will show you places to go for tasty dinner. Sightseeing in Montreux – time, start!

Montreux – the Swiss Riviera

Swiss Riviera – this is where the picturesque Montreux is located. Nice architecture and nature, and in addition, its fabulous location – by the lake, surrounded by mountains, delights. You can say that there is everything you need. It is a great place for short trips – to the mountains, the lake or the vineyards. You can also visit local museums.

However, it is undeniable that Montreux is most famous for its music! Why?

First of all, it is known for one of the most famous jazz festivals in the world. In the summertime, the Festival de Jazz de Montreux has been held in this city since 1967.

Secondly, and very interestingly, in Montreux the group Queen recorded 7 albums! For this reason, on the promenade we can see a statue of Freddy Mercury, the singer of the Queen. Besides, in Montreux you can also visit the band’s museum – a former recording studio.

What else is worth knowing about Montreux? Here they speak French and French habits apply. But about this I write later on.

What To Do In Montreux?

There are plenty of places to visit, but above all, this is a town where you should relax. An extremely well-known attraction is the Chateau de Chillon – the most popular castle in Switzerland!

In Montreux you can visit the previously mentioned Queen-related attractions: the museum, walk along the promenade and take a photo with “Freddy”.

You should definitely take a boat trip on Lake Geneva (French: Lac Léman). In my opinion, lake tours in Switzerland are a super deal. I was able to go on a cruise on Lake Thun and on the mentioned Lake Geneva. There are bars on the ships and you can often order something to eat. From Montreux you can go to Lausanne.

Interesting fact: the tour is included in the Swiss Travel Pass – that is, you don’t have to pay extra for it (if you have the Swiss Travel Pass).

Chateau de Chillon

The most popular castle in Switzerland? Definitely Chateau de Chillon! Chateau de Chillon is located right next to Montreux and can be seen from the promenade. You can get to it in several ways:

– by walking along the promenade to the castle,

– taking a boat from Montreux (or other towns with a port),

– taking the bus/rail to the castle.

Located on the edge of Lake Geneva, this castle is simply fabulous. However, let me start with some practical information. Admission to the castle can be booked in advance. In this way, I managed to avoid quite a long line. Besides, entry is free with a Swiss Travel Pass. As of today, a normal ticket costs CHF 13.50.

And if you’re not a fan of visiting castles, it’s worth seeing at least from the outside, especially from the harbor side. From this side, the view is spectacular! The place is amazing. On the other hand, if you’re wondering whether it’s worth paying: inside you can visit the cellars (which once served as a warehouse or prison), see the chambers or the beautiful courtyard.

Rochers de Naye – a Trip to the Swiss Alps!

To be in Switzerland and not go to the mountains? You can’t do this! In this country there are so many mountains and trails that it’s hard to decide which one to choose. In Montreux the decision is simple. Which one? The easiest way is to go to the Rochers de Naye. It takes an hour by train (not by ski lift!) to get to this mountain. It’s a trip also for those who prefer to admire rather than get tired (like me, for example). A suggestion for the more active people – you can climb to the top ?.

What is this mountain? Rochers de Naye is a 2042-meter-high peak located in the Freiburg Pre-Alps, a part of the Western Alps. I don’t know if there is a better observation point in the area, and to be honest, I highly doubt it. From Rochers de Naye you can see Lake Geneva in its full glory. In addition, you can see the mountain peaks above Montreux, walk around, take a look at the Alpine Garden and to top it off… see marmots!

Yes, I know, maybe marmots in Switzerland are no surprise. But are there many places where you will see marmots up close and true? This is where their breeding farm is located, so you can see their habits, lifestyle or hear them “wheeze” when threatened. Watching them eat a meal (grasses, flowers) is also something amazing.

There is a pub at the top, you can have a beer with a view.

What to Do in Montreux? Take a Ride on a Train from the Old Days!

There’s no denying it, the amazing attraction of Switzerland are the trains. Punctual as clockwork, of course Swiss one. There are many wonderful routes and it’s hard to decide on only one.

I chose the Belle Epoque train, which runs twice a day in the summer. In fact, I took it to Montreux from Zweisimme. It’s a train styled like in the old days – an amazing experience! There is also a panoramic train on the same route, so as you can guess the views are unmatchable.

I’ll just tell you that this is not the only such opportunity to take an interesting train trip, because in Montreux you can take a trip on the Chocolate Train! And often a Belle Epoque train (sometimes panoramic) is substituted on this route. I was also on this tour and I fully recommend that.

Going on the Chocolate Train tour, it’s good to know that it takes all day – departure from Montreux is in the morning, at 9:50, and return is in the afternoon, practically in the evening. The sightseeing includes:

Gruyères, the famous cheese factory,

The charming village of Gruyères, famous for its cheese,

Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory (it’s worth bringing water with you, as there is a tasting at the end!).

Where to Eat in Montreux?

If you want to eat in Montreux, I can recommend the following restaurants:

Les Voiles de La Rouvenaz – I would recommend it for a drink and a pizza. Tasty and good prices as for Switzerland, 25 Swiss francs for dinner and Aperol. A view of the lake for free!

Restaurant Le Museum – I would recommend for wine and Swiss cuisine. This is  a more expensive place – I paid around 40 francs for dinner with wine. A place with a romantic atmosphere, without hustle and bustle, perfect for a date.

I had breakfast at the hotel (more about that below). It is worth to know that lunch in this part of Switzerland is eaten in French style. What does this mean? You eat it from 12:00 – 14:30 (more or less), after this hour it is hard to find an open restaurant. The above-mentioned Les Voiles de La Rouvenaz was open with a limited menu (pizza). I also went to eat at McDonalds, but there the standard is the same all over the world.

Other than that, in the city I recommend chocolate ice cream with Swiss chocolate at Movenpic network ?.

Where to Stay in Montreux (Hotels)?

There is no secret that there are quite a lot of hotels in Montreux. However, during the summer season the occupancy rate is very high, which makes the prices higher. For this reason, I opted for Hotel Tralalala – I paid 138 francs per night (including breakfast, which cost 15 francs/night). Comfortable, clean and quiet, and the breakfasts were tasty – not somehow particularly varied, but for a few days it was OK.

This hotel in Montreux is located 15 minutes from the lake, but from my side a small remark! It is definitely better to take a cab, car or bus 206 with your luggage, because dragging suitcases up a steep hill can tire you out. For that the way down is a pleasure. ?

Switzerland is simply amazing. There is no need to beat around the bush, to wonder if it is worth it and if it is actually as picturesque as in the photos. It is even more beautiful, because in the photos we can’t smell the fragrance of blooming flowers or hear the sound of water flowing from the numerous fountains.

Today I take you on a journey through Switzerland. Follow my itinerary to see what places in Switzerland are worth seeing. There are many more places, because we can find something beautiful at every turn in this country. My plan is to do it in a week, in slow-travel mode. We’ll explore boutique Swiss cities, take day trips to the mountains, try local food and do a lot of travelling. By train. And sail by boat!

I visited Switzerland on an invitation of Switzerland Tourism at the Swiss Embassy. During that time, I explored Swiss cities and charming corners of Switzerland on my own. Thank you ?!

Going to Switzerland – Practical Tips

Before going to Switzerland, it is worth:

– Turn off mobile Internet. Roaming is expensive. We can spend a lot of money, even up to 20 000 euros – there were such cases! How to solve this? Using maps, searching for nearby attractions while traveling is something we are used to do. The solution is simple – you can buy a SIM card for 20 francs,  for instance, of the Swisscom network and have Internet for the next, let’s say, 7 days.  You can find these at vending machines at the airport and it’s nothing difficult to figure out, you just need to have your ID card with you. The second solution related to the phone in Switzerland – you can buy a package  via your network.  At my operator (T-Mobile) 1 GB costs about 150 euros. So much more profitable is the first option, of course.

– If you are traveling by train and public transportation, see if it  pays for you to enjoy various attractions with the Swiss Travel Pass. This card covers not only trains and public transportation, but also boats, museums, and castles. If you want to do a lot of sightseeing, it can come out much cheaper than buying tickets for each transportation, museum separately.

– Buy insurance (the European health card works, but does not cover the entire amount of medical treatment).

– While staying in some cities, such as Montreux or Bern, you will get a card for public transportation at your hotel. If you don’t have a Swiss Travel Pass, it can be useful.

– I visited the German-speaking and French-speaking parts of Switzerland. It is worth to know that in this French part lunches/dinners are eaten at designated times – until 2 pm and from 6 pm. Besides, you can go for pizza or fast food.

– In Switzerland there are only contacts for narrow pins. A phone with a European charger will charge without a problem, but for a laptop you need an adapter. You can rent it at the hotel – but not in every one.

– Do you need a passport to Switzerland? This is the most common question. Much depends on your citizenship. I flew on a plane with a Polish passport and only had my ID card with me. And yes, to Switzerland an ID card was enough for me.

Switzerland by train – important information

Swiss trains are really comfortable. Top quality, they arrive on time and, of course, are not the cheapest.

How to save money on trains and attractions? If you have plans to do a lot of traveling and sightseeing, a Swiss Travel Pass will be useful. With this pass for a limited time, you are eligible to travel on trains, ships, buses, and even mountain railroads! On special panoramic trains, including the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, Gotard Panoramic Express and Palm Express, seat reservations or an additional fee are required.

The pass does not apply to all railroads, but with this card you get a 50% discount. The Swiss Travel Pass also gives you free admission to more than 500 museums, including castles!

Top Spots of Bern

What is worth to see in Bern? In my opinion, the best would be to start with the first delight – the view of the Aare River from the Parliament. This view is really amazing! If you want, you can visit the Parliament and, if you are lucky, see the politicians in session. Bookings are made through the parliament website. Next to the Parliament in Bern there is the Kleine Schanze – a park, where it is worth stopping to have a coffee or just to watch the Swiss who spend time there on sunny days.

Bern’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There you will find the Zytglogge – the clock tower, which we visit a few minutes before the full hour. Three minutes before the full hour a short spectacle plays out. So short that if you come, let’s say, at 12 o’clock, it will already be over. And you will have to wait another 57 minutes for the next one!

An unmissable attraction of Bern is Rosengarten and Bärengraben. I’ll start with the latter, which you can walk to via Nydeggbrücke – from this bridge you can see the former Lindt chocolate factory! Bern is a city that is famous for… bears. Its symbol, with which the legend is connected, are precisely large bears. And you can see them in Bern, precisely in Bärengraben.  You can watch the bears sleeping, bathing (not in the Aare River, to be sure!) or up close, when they are in the old enclosure. That’s when you can see them at their best – check for yourself!

Rosengarten, or rose garden, is located on a hill. The views from it are phenomenal, and if you don’t want to climb, take the No. 10 bus towards Ostermundigen – It leaves directly from under the bears and right next to the station. The garden makes an amazing, idyllic impression. There is a restaurant – perfect for coffee, cake or something bigger. Meanwhile, the view of the city from Bern’s Rosengarten is unmatchable!

The attractions of Swiss Bern are endless. With a Swiss Travel Pass you can visit a ton of museums, which I will point out to you: Alpines Museum der Schweiz, Bernisches Historisches Museum/Einstein Museum, Heilsarmee-Museum, Klingende Sammlung, Kornhausforum, Kunsthalle, Kunstmuseum, Museum Cerny, Museum für Kommunikation, Naturhistorisches Museum, Psychiatrie-Museum, Zentrum Paul Klee.

I personally visited the Einstein Museum, which is located in the Historical Museum. Definitely worth learning about the history of Albert Einstein and his family! And if you can’t get enough, you can see his apartment in the Old Town, from the time he lived in Bern.

Where to Sleep in Bern?

There are really a lot of hotels in Bern. I opted for the Hotel National Bern – I paid 100 francs per night (including breakfast). Located not far from the Old Town, near the train station. Clean and with friendly staff. At the reception desk a lady Malwina, who is happy to help ?.

Thun – a Wonderful City in Switzerland

While in Bern, it’s definitely worth popping out to Thun! It is, in my opinion, such a “must see” in Switzerland – a lake, mountains, a beautiful town, a castle, greenery. There is no shortage of anything here, so even if you have little time, stop at least for an hour – you will not regret it. I myself went to Thun spontaneously, around 5 pm, and it was a great decision. I totally fell in love with this town.

Take a ride on a period train!

Honestly, it was worth it to make up some distance and take this wonderful train. Let me just tell you that this is not the only such opportunity, because in Montreux you can take a trip on the Chocolate Train! And it’s often a Belle Epoque train (sometimes panoramic).

Montreux – the Swiss Riviera

Montreux is a well-known resort whose promenade stretches for miles. Add to this a fabulous location – lake, mountains, palm trees and really interesting architecture. Besides, it’s a great place for excursions – to the mountains, on the lake, or discovering vineyards or local museums and attractions.

However, this city is famous above all, for music! First, for one of the most famous jazz festivals in the world. In the summer, the Festival de Jazz de Montreux has been held since 1967. This year you don’t have to pay to enter the concerts, but to attend the festival you need to show a valid test or vaccination QR code. Interestingly, it was here in Montreux that the band Queen recorded 7 albums! Therefore, on the promenade  go see the statue of Freddy Mercury, the singer of the band Queen. You can also visit the band’s museum – a former recording studio.

Chocolate Train in Switzerland and Gruyères

Switzerland means chocolate. And cheese! If you want to discover the secrets of Swiss chocolate production and history, be sure to take a trip on the chocolate train! Here you need to make a booking in advance, with a Swiss Travel Pass you pay a surcharge of about 250 zł (59 francs) – the price includes refreshments and a tour of the following places:

Gruyères, a cheese factory, you visit the charming village of Gruyères, famous for its cheese (more on that later).

Chocolate tasting at the Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory (it is advisable to bring water with you!).

When taking a trip on the Chocolate Train, you should know that it takes all day – departure from Montreux is first thing in the morning, at 9:50, return in the afternoon. In Gruyères, I recommend eating cheese fondue, such as at the Remparts restaurant. They also serve really good wine!

What is there to see in Gruyeres? I visited the Gruyeres castle (needless to say, it’s worth it? The views are breathtaking!), the Tibet Museum and the Giger Museum. The Tibet Museum, although small, made an indescribable impression on me – mystical music, exhibitions that transport you to the world of Tibet. The Giger Museum, on the other hand, is the museum of the gentleman who created the Alien film series – It is amazing, but also quite eerie.

 I would forget to add – the attractions in Gruyères are free if you have a Swiss Travel Pass!

Boat Tours on Lakes in Switzerland

Boat tours on lakes in Switzerland turned out to be my favorite attraction. I was able to sail on Lake Thun and on Lake Geneva. I will tell you what it was like – I’ll start with the fact that there is a bar on the boats and you can often order something to eat. Besides, the following tours are included in the Swiss Travel Pass – meaning you don’t have to pay extra for them!

Lake Thun Tour

The port in Thun is located right next to the Thun Railway Station. There you will also find the timetable – you can sail to more towns, such as Spiez. You can also take a sunset tour of the lake, but mind that on such tour seats are often reserved. I didn’t have a booking, and yes I had a place to sit, but there were no seats at the elegant tables where one would have a pleasant dinner.  On this route you can order delicious dishes!

The trip around the lake began at 6:40 pm and ended after sunset, around 9:30 pm. The ship stopped at all stations, but most passengers sailed all the way – from Thun to Thun ?.

Lake Geneva Tour

I sailed on Lake Geneva twice. On the route you can order coffee, drinks –  unfortunately, I do not know what they have on the menu to eat, because I sailed quite a short time.

A trip on Lake Geneva from the Château de Chillon. I noticed too late that the back of the ship was another great place for photos and went forward. Do not make my mistake, for such a trip will be unforgettable!

Journey from Vevey to Montreux. The town of Vevey is located not far from Montreux and is definitely worth a visit. It’s more intimate than Montreux and it’s where I scored a dip in Lake Geneva!

Travel to Switzerland

I traveled in Switzerland only by train and public transportation and it was a hit. Everything was on time, of the highest quality.
