Exploring new cultures, traditions, and connecting with indigenous communities brings a unique dimension to travel. In Tunisia, I decided to visit such places to delve into local customs and meet people who preserve their unique traditions.

I was particularly intrigued by the Berbers, who call themselves Amazigh, meaning “free people” in a loose translation. They are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa. Importantly, the Berbers continue to cultivate their traditions and language. The term “Berber” originates from the Latin word barbarus, meaning “barbarian.” However, at the time, the true meaning of the word as we know it today was not understood.

Where Do the Berbers Live?

Their presence spans from Egypt to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sahara. The largest Berber populations are in Morocco and Algeria, with 6 to 7 million people still speaking their language. They also inhabited the Canary Islands, where they were known as the Guanches. In this post, I will focus solely on Tunisia, where you can also explore Berber culture. We’ll head to Tataouine.

Tataouine 

Picturesque Berber towns like Chenini and Douiret are located in southern Tunisia, in the Tataouine region. Interestingly, the Berber language is still used in these villages, highlighting the region’s cultural heritage. This is also evidence that the history of these places is not confined to the walls of ancient ksars; it proves that culture and tradition remain alive.

Both towns are situated in the mountains and equipped with ksars—fortified granaries perched atop hills to provide safety and secure food supplies. These ancient Berber settlements, located high in the mountains, resemble fortress ruins. Access to the ksars—places filled with storage niches—is via steep stairs and ladders. They were used to store provisions, ensuring the residents’ safety against raids and harsh climatic conditions.

Chenini

Chenini is one of the most famous places associated with the Berbers in Tunisia.

The oldest granary structures on the hillside date back to the 12th century! Notably, in 2023, around five hundred Berber shepherds and farmers still lived in Chenini’s rock-hewn homes. The village is known for its cave dwellings, which provided thermal insulation—cool in the heat and warm on cold nights. Strolling through it, you can admire a labyrinth of narrow streets, ruins of traditional granaries, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

It’s worth knowing that the town also stands out for a site believed to be the tomb of the Seven Sleepers (Saba’a Rijal), making it a pilgrimage destination.

Douiret

Douiret is a less-known but equally fascinating village. Its layout resembles a labyrinth of houses and caves situated on rocky terraces. The town captivates with its raw beauty and atmosphere of abandonment, offering endless landscapes and grazing animals. Douiret also has a mosque, and I stayed overnight in an extraordinary hotel, a cave dwelling in Douiret. Staying in such a traditional house and eating meals prepared by women who have lived there for years provides insight into the lives of the locals. It’s an incredible experience that I highly recommend.

Troglodyte House

During my visit to the region, I had the extraordinary opportunity to meet the locals, who proudly preserve their traditions. One of the most touching moments was meeting a troglodyte family—a group living in the area around Matmata. Some still live in houses carved into the soft, sandy-clay rock, while others also host tourists like me.

Invited into one such home, we were hosted like old friends. In the middle of a small courtyard, a table awaited us where we could enjoy traditional bread. Made before our eyes, it was served with local olive oil and honey—a taste of simplicity that stays with you. During conversations, I learned more about their daily life, challenges, and traditions passed down through generations. I also had the chance to wear traditional attire—an incredibly fascinating experience.

Ksar Ouled Soltane

This is one of the most impressive ksars in southern Tunisia, built in the 15th century. Also located in the Tataouine region, this ksar is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its well-preserved architecture. Walking through this site, you can feel the spirit of history and imagine how Berber communities, facing harsh climatic conditions and threats, created such extraordinary spaces. The ksar covers two courtyards and has over 400 individual food storage cells.

This ksar also gained international fame thanks to the movie Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Scenes depicting the slave quarters of Mos Espa, where young Anakin Skywalker lived, were filmed here. Thanks to this cinematic role, Ksar Ouled Soltane became a unique landmark on Tunisia’s map.

Walking through these settlements, you get the impression that every stone and every corner has its own story to tell. These are not just places to admire but also places where you can feel the atmosphere and the scent of the desert wind. Unfortunately, photos cannot fully capture this, so the only solution is to visit in person.

Today I want to share with you our journey through Tunisia, or rather its exact plan! In total, we covered a whopping 2764 kilometers! It was an incredible adventure during which we had the chance to see not only the desert and the oases within it but also intriguing monuments from other cultures and truly iconic places related to “Star Wars.” Ready? Let’s start!

Djerba

First, we landed on Djerba. It’s a Tunisian island connected to the mainland by a causeway located in the Gulf of Gabès. You can learn more about Djerba in this post that I prepared for you. We stayed here, and after exploring Djerba, we headed to El Djem (El Jem) – the journey took 4 hours and covered 330 kilometers.

El Djem (El Jem)

El Djem is a small town with a population of 22,000 people, which was once the Roman city of Thysdrus, the most important in the region after Carthage. Its main attraction is the remains of the amphitheater listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Amphitheater

The amphitheater in El Djem is the third largest in the world, better preserved than the Roman Colosseum. It is the most impressive structure of its kind in the entire North Africa. Built around 238 AD, at its peak, it could accommodate up to 35,000 spectators. It is definitely worth taking the time to explore it, if only because of its size!

From El Djem, we then went to Sfax. The journey took us exactly an hour, covering a distance of 75 kilometers.

Sfax

Sfax is a charming port city with thick walls surrounding the medina, one of the most beautiful in Tunisia. In Sfax, we stayed at Les Oliviers Palace, a hotel similar to – and located near – this one.

Medina

The famous medina in Sfax was built by Prince Aghlabid Abu Abbass Muhammad between 849 and 851 AD; it is the best-preserved example of Arab-Muslim architecture in the Mediterranean basin. At its center is the Great Mosque from the 9th century. Market streets surround it from its northwest facade, while the rest of the area is occupied by residential neighborhoods.

From Sfax, we headed to Tozeur; the journey took us four hours, during which we covered 350 kilometers!

Tozeur

Tozeur is a desert city adjacent to a huge oasis consisting of hundreds of thousands of palm trees. Here, we had the pleasure of staying at the Ras El Aïn hotel near Palm Beach Palace.

Palm Grove Park

Tozeur is home to hundreds of thousands of date palms, making it one of the largest oases in Tunisia. The grove impresses with its unusual size and a variety of vegetation. Within the oasis area rises the Eden Palm Park. After paying the entrance fee, you can walk among the palms with a guide who will tell you the story of these trees and their fruits!

Museum of the Earth

Chak Wak Museum is a place where you can learn about the history of the Earth and humanity – from the Big Bang itself. The exhibitions present all geological epochs in succession. One of the main points of interest are the figures of prehistoric people and animals, including dinosaurs! The exhibitions also lead through the history of religions and specific civilizations. It’s an interesting place for families with children!

Mos Espa

Located 40 km (and 40 minutes drive) from Tozeur, Mos Espa is a settlement built in the desert by film writers for two productions from the “Star Wars” series: “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones”. Empty inside, recognizable buildings stand on the former film set for 40 years. It is a place frequented by tourists, especially science fiction fans.

Chebika Oasis

From Tozeur to the mountain oasis of Chebika, it took us 45 minutes (50 km). It is adjacent to abandoned, stone houses that once formed a village. The present water from the springs allowed for the creation and flourishing of a palm grove at the foot of the mentioned old village. From this place, it only takes a few minutes walk to see the Tamerza waterfall. The Chebika Oasis is considered the most beautiful in Tunisia.

Tozeur – City Tour

Tozeur is famous for its yellow-brown brick and geometric patterns that adorn the facades of most buildings. Narrow, arched streets in the oldest part of the city resemble a maze. The modern tourist zone, on the other hand, is located on the southwestern outskirts of the city.

Douz

The 125-kilometer journey from Tozeur to Douz – a small town called the Gateway to the Sahara – took us 2 hours. We passed by a salt lake, which I’ll describe shortly! In Douz, we stayed at El Mouradi hotel.

Salt Lake

Chott el Jerid Lake is the largest salt lake in the Sahara. Its surface area is as much as 5,000 square kilometers! Due to the desert climate, it almost completely dries up in summer, leaving a shiny layer of salt, and during the rainy season, its area fills with water again, creating a salt lake. A road two meters wide runs through it, and that’s the road from Tozeur.

Matmata

After covering 90 kilometers, which took us an hour, we found ourselves in Matmata, where we learned about Berber culture.

Troglodyte House

Berbers are the indigenous inhabitants of ancient Berberia. One such people are the so-called troglodytes. Representatives of this people live in the Matmata region. Some of them still live in houses carved into sandy-clay rocks – these ancient structures helped to protect against extreme temperatures. While visiting one of these houses, we had the opportunity to try traditionally baked bread with olive oil and honey!

Star Wars Hotel

The Sidi Driss Hotel has become one of the most famous places where “Star Wars” was filmed. It is colloquially called the “Star Wars hotel”. It’s a traditional Berber house. In the movie, it served as the Lars Homestead on Tatooine. The hotel, with its intact decorations, is open all year round. A restaurant has been opened on its premises, where you can eat in the same place as in the movie!

Ksar Ghilane

From Matmata, we traveled for an hour and a half to see the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, which is 120 kilometers away! This oasis is fed by a hot spring (a small lake) with thermal properties, where you can bathe. Interestingly, the oasis serves as a refuge for dozens of nomadic families who live off the sale of dates and animal husbandry, as well as tourism.

Tataouine

After covering another 150 km (in 2 and a half hours), we landed in a place whose name you surely recognize: Tataouine! Region is famous for its surrounding ksars (fortified granaries). It became known thanks to being a filming location for “Star Wars,” which is easy to decipher because the city lent its name to the desert planet Tatooine. Here, we stayed in an unusual hotel, a cave at Douiret!

Chenini

Thirty minutes from Gîte Douiret, 30 kilometers from the city, lies Chenini, a ruined Berber village. Located on a hill near a contemporary village of the same name, Chenini was a fortified granary built between two hills. The oldest structures on the hillside date back to the 12th century. In 2023, about five hundred Berber shepherds and farmers still lived in the rock houses of Chenini.

Ksar Ouled Soltane

Another forty kilometers (just over half an hour’s drive) and we saw Ksar Ouled Soltane. It is also a fortified, multi-level granary built by the Berbers in the 15th century. It is very well preserved. This ksar occupies the area of two courtyards and has over 400 individual food storage cells.

Ksar Ouled Soltane also appeared in the movie “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” in some scenes depicting the slave quarters in Mos Espa, where the character Anakin Skywalker lived as a boy.

Ksar Ouled Soltane – Djerba

After two hours and covering 150 kilometers, our trip ended in Djerba, from where we set off! This time we stayed at Ulysse Djerba Thalasso & SPA.

Although it’s known that you can’t see everything during one trip, I consider this one to Tunisia a fantastic experience during which we managed to see quite a lot! If you’re here, you’re probably wondering what there is to see on Tunisian Djerba. Let me share my impressions from a trip that started with this magical island. For me, Djerba is not only the beginning of an adventure through Tunisia, but also a symbol of perfect relaxation. Let’s start with the weather – sunny days are almost guaranteed here, even outside the season, making Djerba a perfect place for sunbathing and relaxation. Additionally, the island offers plenty of interesting attractions, picturesque places, and of course, delicious Tunisian cuisine.

Sounds like the perfect plan? I won’t prolong it, I just invite you to read about the island of Djerba.

Djerba

Let’s start with the fact that Djerba is the largest Tunisian island, located in the Gulf of Gabes on the Mediterranean Sea. We can easily reach it directly from Poland, for example from Katowice or Warsaw. Djerba has a typical Mediterranean climate, which means it’s the perfect place to visit at any time of the year. It’s also worth mentioning that Djerba is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway dating back to Roman times, and as you might expect, it’s an island with a truly long history. Moreover, since 2023, the island can boast an official entry on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which further emphasizes its cultural and historical significance.

Erriadh and the Djerbahood project

Have you heard of Djerbahood? In 2014, artists from all over the world gathered in the village of Erriadh on Djerba to create an open-air museum with over 250 murals. Moreover, this project is still ongoing, with many new murals being created. Many of them refer to Tunisian traditions. It’s a unique street art gallery and one of the most photogenic places I’ve had the opportunity to see! In addition to street art, Erriadh is full of bougainvillea, which is admired as much as the art itself. This artistic and social project has become a tourist attraction for Erriadh and continues to this day.

El-Ghriba Synagogue

The ancient El Ghriba synagogue, also known as the Djerba synagogue, is located in the Jewish village of Er-Riadh, a few kilometers from Houmt El Souk, the main town of Djerba. It is the oldest synagogue in Tunisia and most likely in the whole of Africa. Besides being an active and popular synagogue, it is also a place of pilgrimage, as one legend says that there is a stone from the Temple of Solomon in the building.

Thanks to the reconstruction visible today, the temple dates back to the 19th century, although it is much older in reality. The covered courtyard impresses with its decoration of colorful ceramic tiles. The prayer hall is adorned with blue columns supporting arches alternately painted in blue and white stripes. In the synagogue, you will also see stained glass windows and memorial plaques left by pilgrims.

Houmt El Souk Market

When in Houmt El Souk, a visit to the local market is a must. It’s a place that’s always bustling with life. At the market, you can order fresh seafood or see firsthand how harissa (a traditional spicy paste made from peppers) is handcrafted. The mountains of various aromatic spices there are particularly impressive and worth stocking up on!

Sweet lovers will find fresh dates and artisanal halva there. If you’re interested in souvenirs, you’ll find plenty at the Houmt El Souk bazaar, mostly in the form of handicrafts and ceramic products. You can also get clothing or olive wood products.

Borj El Kebir Fortress

Borj Ghazi Mustapha, also known as Borj El Kebir, is a fort located at the fishing port of the town of Houmt El Souk. It was built in 1289 by Roger de Loria, the admiral of Aragon and Sicily, on the site of the remains of a Roman fortress. In 1557, it underwent reconstruction commissioned by Turgut, a Turkish corsair and admiral of the Ottoman fleet.

Borj El Kebir was built in a rectangular plan. Both round and square towers are embedded in the walls. The entrance doors open onto a vestibule that once defended access to the courtyard. A small room, transformed into a museum, gathers various objects found within Borj Ghazi Mustapha during excavations, as well as explanatory plaques. The fortress offers a picturesque view of the sea.

From September 16 to the end of May, the fort is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. From the beginning of June to mid-September, it is open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Remember that on Fridays, the fort is not accessible to visitors! The entrance fee is 8 TND.

Sidi Yati Mosque

Sidi Yati Mosque is located on the southwestern coast of the island, in the village of El Fâhmîne. This small mosque was built in the early 10th century in memory of Khalaf Ibn Ahmad, also known as Sheikh Yati El Mistawi. It is one of the mosques that, besides being a place of worship, played an important role in the defense system of the time – it served as a watchtower, guarding the coast.

Today, the inactive mosque mainly consists of a courtyard, a prayer hall, and a tomb. Its walls are covered with a thick layer of white lime. And above all, it’s a brilliant place to admire the sunset!

Kitesurfing

One of the sporting attractions of Djerba is kitesurfing. The Kiteworldwide station opened on the island in 2019. The shallow water of the lagoon with sandy bottom is ideal for beginners. Over 2/3 of windy days a year create exceptionally favorable conditions for kitesurfing, also for advanced riders. There is plenty of space along the coast for practicing this sport, so everyone will find their spot! For those interested, lessons with an instructor are available – you can take advantage of the school where Sylwia from Poland is an instructor.

Guellala and pottery production

Guellala is a village located in the south of Djerba, which, thanks to its rich clay deposits, is famous for its ceramic products. You will find the most pottery workshops on the island there, which is evident at first glance because clay vessels line the squares and sidewalks and decorate the streets with their colors. The village also houses the Heritage Museum, which is worth seeing due to its interesting exhibits.

If you plan to visit the village, be sure to take a guided tour, as you will have the opportunity not only to see how pottery is made in a traditional workshop but also to try your hand at this difficult art under the guidance of a master!

Crocodile Farm Djerba

Explore Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. It is located in the center of the town of Midun. It was opened in 2003 and is best known for its Crocodile Farm.

The aforementioned Farm covers an impressive area of ​​20,000 square meters and is the largest of its kind in the entire Mediterranean basin! In the ponds and tropical greenhouses, you will see up to 400 Nile crocodiles imported from Madagascar, swimming or basking in the sun. This species is one of the largest crocodile species in the world. You can catch shows with these impressive animals!

The visiting hours for the Crocodile Farm are as follows: from the beginning of July to the end of August, it is open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, and from September to the end of June – from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. The admission fee for adults is 30 TND, and for children, it is 20 TND.

Flamingo Island

Ras Rmel is a long and sandy peninsula located in the southern part of Djerba, which is called “Flamingo Island”. Every year, from October to February, a lot of pink flamingos fly to the peninsula, wading in the surrounding lagoon. It’s a breathtaking sight! Besides flamingos, you can also spot other species of water birds there, such as cormorants and pelicans. With a bit of luck, you might also see dolphins!

Excavations in Meninx

The Meninx archaeological site is located on the southeastern coast of the island, near the town of Henchir El Kantara. It is two kilometers long and eight hundred meters wide. It represents the ruins of a city founded by the Phoenicians in the 10th century BC. During the Roman rule, the city of Meninx gained the status of a capital and became the political center of the island.

Admission to the excavation site is free. You will be able to admire numerous remains of marble columns and foundations, which once formed baths, a theater, a Roman forum, and an amphitheater.

Where to stay on Djerba?

I stayed at two hotels on Djerba. If I were to return to Djerba, I would have trouble choosing where to stay because I can recommend both places.

• Calimera Yati Beach is a hotel located on a sandy beach, with free sun loungers. It also has an outdoor pool and a restaurant serving mainly local cuisine. The choice is sufficient, with different dishes every day. There are animations, even out of season, table tennis, a beach bar. It has a friendly, holiday atmosphere. Free WiFi is available throughout the property. In the rooms, we can count on a bathtub (the second place I checked had only a shower). You can book directly through booking.

• Ulysse Djerba Thalasso & SPA is a five-star hotel in Houmt Souk, right on Mezraia Beach. It offers an outdoor pool (there is also an indoor one), a fitness center, and many great spa treatments. The rooms are air-conditioned with free WiFi. A wider choice of food than in Calimera Yati Beach. Guests can enjoy various attractions, such as a playground for children, table tennis, and darts. You can book directly through booking.

A journey to Kenya can be a unique and fascinating experience, but it requires some preparation and knowledge of local customs. In this post, you will find some practical information that may prove useful when planning a trip to this African country. Let’s start with the most crucial aspect – the formalities. Adhering to local laws and customs and exercising caution while traveling is essential for a successful trip. In the following sections, I will share my preparations and experiences. I wish you a successful journey to Kenya – it’s a beautiful country that is definitely worth visiting, and I would love to return there!

Formalities Before Departing for Kenya

Before embarking on your journey to Kenya, there are certain formalities you must complete:

1. Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for a minimum of 6 months from your planned return date from Kenya.
2. Visa: A visa is required for entry into Kenya and must be obtained before departure. You can apply for an e-visa online via the official website at www.evisa.go.ke. Please note that it is not possible to purchase a visa upon arrival in Kenya. Ensure your visa will cover the entire duration of your stay.
3. Visa Processing Time: Typically, the visa is issued within 48 hours after the application is submitted. However, this processing time may vary (for instance, I received mine in 1 day, while Maciej’s took 4 days, as he applied on a Friday and received it on Monday). Importantly, you must have already purchased (at least) an overnight stay before applying for a visa.

Completing these formalities in advance will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip to Kenya.

Vaccinations and Health Precautions

Before embarking on your trip to Kenya, it is highly recommended to consult a travel doctor for guidance on required vaccinations and preventive healthcare measures. Some travelers may need vaccinations for diseases like yellow fever, typhoid, and hepatitis, but the specific recommendations may vary depending on your planned destinations and the duration of your stay in Kenya.

Malaria is prevalent in Kenya, so it is essential to take precautions. Make sure to use appropriate mosquito repellents and consider taking anti-malaria prophylaxis as advised by your healthcare provider.

In addition to vaccinations and malaria prevention, we also took the following health precautions:

• Travel Insurance: We purchased comprehensive travel insurance, including coverage for remote or hard-to-reach areas. We also obtained a “Flying Doctor” insurance policy, recommended by Agnieszka, who runs a travel agency in Kenya.
• Medications: We packed a well-stocked first-aid kit, which, fortunately, we didn’t need to use. The kit included medications for stomach issues, pain relief, anti-inflammatories, sore throat remedies, vitamins, minerals, as well as essential items like bandages, plasters, and disinfectants.

By taking these health precautions, you can better ensure your well-being during your trip to Kenya.

Water in Kenya

Avoid drinking tap water in Kenya, and refrain from using it even for brushing your teeth. Along the coast, the water may come from the ocean floor, making it brackish, so it’s best to err on the side of caution. Instead, always rely on bottled water. Furthermore, be cautious about consuming ice in beverages purchased from street vendors.

Currency in Kenya (and Payment Methods)

The official currency of Kenya is the Kenyan shilling (KES). To obtain local currency, you can exchange your money at currency exchange offices, including those at the airport. It’s advisable to carry dollars or euros for exchange, as Polish zlotys may not be readily accepted.

Officially, Kenyan currency cannot be taken out of Kenya. However, it is possible to purchase Kenyan currency in your country at select exchange offices, though the legal implications of transporting it out of the country may be uncertain. ?

Credit cards are widely accepted in larger stores, but it’s prudent to carry some cash, particularly for purchasing souvenirs and making smaller transactions.

It is definitely more profitable to pay in KES than in USD.

Language in Kenya

Communicating in English should pose no difficulty during your stay. Kenya’s official languages are Swahili and English, with over 50 diverse languages spoken across the country.

Roaming, Internet, and SIM Card Purchase in Kenya

Roaming in Kenya can be quite expensive. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a local SIM card, such as one from Safaricom. For 1,100 Kenyan shillings, you can acquire a SIM card that includes the following package (as of 2023): 400 minutes, 1000 SMS, 8.0 GB of data, and free WhatsApp usage. To purchase the SIM card, you will need to visit a store and have your passport with you.

Anyway, we found that we had coverage almost everywhere, including many remote safari locations. We highly recommend it. ?

Transportation in Kenya

In Kenya, several transportation options are available, including traveling by car, train, and plane (which is the fastest option, particularly on the Mombasa-Nairobi route). However, buses are generally not recommended due to certain reliability and safety concerns.

The condition of roads in Kenya can vary depending on your chosen route. Public transportation is accessible in major cities, but when exploring the country, you can opt for taxis or tuk-tuks. I recommend using a ride-sharing app like Bolt or Uber, as it proved to be the most cost-effective option during our travels.

Local Customs in Kenya

As with any journey, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with local customs and culture in Kenya. Here are some important aspects to be aware of:

1. Tipping Culture: Kenya is a country where tipping is customary. It can be a bit challenging to navigate initially, as nearly everyone expects a tip. Understanding how much and when to tip can be confusing. It’s a good idea to inquire or observe local customs to determine appropriate tipping practices.
2. Bargaining: In many places, especially where prices are not fixed (such as souvenir shops on the beach, tuk-tuks, and taxis), bargaining is expected. Prices can vary significantly, and it’s often possible to negotiate a price much lower than initially quoted. Engage in friendly negotiation, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from fellow travelers, even if they are tourists, to determine fair prices.

Being mindful of these customs will enhance your travel experience in Kenya and help you navigate interactions with locals more smoothly.

Avoid openly displaying your phone, cash, or valuable gadgets while walking in public spaces, as there have been instances of individuals on scooters snatching such items from pedestrians. Many individuals assert that Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, is relatively hazardous, a fact supported by statistics. Although I haven’t personally visited Nairobi, I believe it’s prudent to exercise caution during any trip. ?

Electricity in Kenya

It’s important to note that Kenya uses British-type electrical outlets. Therefore, if your electronic devices have different plug types, it’s advisable to bring an adapter with you. Additionally, during your stay, especially in lodges during safaris, you may experience occasional brief power outages.

Climate and Weather in Kenya

Kenya boasts a diverse climate that varies according to the region and season. Situated on the equator in East Africa, Kenya can be broadly categorized into several primary climate zones, encompassing coastal, inland, and mountainous areas. Therefore, the contents of your packing list for Kenya will be contingent on your planned destinations and the specific time of year, be it during the rainy or dry season.

For instance, if your itinerary includes both the coast and a safari, it’s advisable to pack long pants and a warm sweatshirt for cool mornings and evenings, as well as short-sleeved shirts and shorts for daytime wear. When exploring cities, it’s essential to be mindful of local customs and traditions, as wearing short shorts and revealing clothing may not be well-received in some places due to religious or cultural norms.

A safari in Kenya is an unforgettable experience that can fulfill the dreams of many travelers. However, it’s essential to be well-prepared and choose the right timing.

In general, what can you see on a safari? Much depends on the visited park, which I’ll explain further. Certainly, many tourists dream of seeing the so-called “Big Five” of Africa. The Big Five of Africa is a term that encompasses five species of large mammals: elephants, black rhinos, lions, buffalos, and leopards.

If you’re planning a safari trip to Kenya, you’ll find some important information in this post that can help you with trip planning.

Cost of Safari in Kenya

The cost of a safari in Kenya can vary significantly. The price depends on factors such as the type of park you visit, the duration of your stay, and the standard of accommodation. Additionally, it greatly depends on the tour company you choose (I’ll explain why using such a company is valuable later). The timing is also important; during migration season, accommodation costs can significantly increase.

For example, during our safari, the cost of accommodation was a minimum of $150, and for two days of park entry, we paid $120 per person.

What To Do Before Safari

Formalities are a crucial aspect before traveling to Kenya. Essential documents include a passport, visas, and potentially vaccinations against tropical diseases. Therefore, it’s advisable to consult with a travel medicine specialist before your safari and consider malaria prophylaxis. Pack appropriate clothing and gear, including long pants, a warm sweater for chilly mornings and evenings, and layers for the daytime. Don’t forget a sun hat, UV sunscreen, mosquito repellent (Mugga Deet), a camera, and binoculars.

When it comes to clothing, it’s best to avoid wearing navy blue, as it attracts insects. ?

Internet on Safari

While sleeping in lodges, you may have access to Wi-Fi, but its quality can vary depending on the location and demand. However, using roaming in Kenya can be costly.

Fortunately, obtaining a SIM card, such as from Safaricom, is easy. For 1,100 Kenyan shillings, along with the card, you’ll get a package (e.g., the 2023 package) containing 400 minutes of talk time, 1,000 SMS, 8.0 GB of data, and free access to WhatsApp. To purchase such a card, simply visit a store and have your passport with you.

A noteworthy point is that network coverage is practically available everywhere, even in many safari locations. I highly recommend this option. ?

Best Times for Safari

The best time for a safari in Kenya is during the period of the great animal migration, which typically occurs from July to October. However, this timing isn’t fixed, and it’s hard to predict precisely. It’s advisable to avoid the rainy season due to increased mosquito activity. The rainy season occurs from April to June and from November to December. However, on the coast, especially during the “small rainy season” from November to December, the rain is barely noticeable. When we were in Kenya at the end of September and early October, we had two rainy days, but the rest was sunny.

Which Park to Choose for Safari

Kenya is famous for its many magnificent national parks and nature reserves where you can admire the wildlife and flora. Kenya has 24 national parks and additional reserves. One of the most well-known is Maasai Mara National Reserve, where the great animal migration takes place.

It’s worth noting that not every park will offer sightings of all the animals, so it’s essential to research and understand each park’s characteristics to match your preferences. For example, in Tsavo West, you can see the Big Five of Africa, as I mentioned at the beginning. However, even in Tsavo West, spotting all these species isn’t straightforward, especially animals like leopards that are challenging to spot and require patience and luck.

Wildlife Observation on Safari

 Why do I believe it’s worthwhile to go with a reputable tour company? Because good eyesight alone isn’t enough on a safari; you need to know where to look for animals and understand their habits. While you can explore Kenya on your own, spotting wildlife independently, in my opinion, is a waste of time. Guides have experience, knowledge about where to find animals, and communication with others through radios, so in my view, a safari without an expert is not a good choice. I watched many YouTube videos, and safaris without guides were much less impressive and yielded fewer animal sightings.

We traveled with a group of six and a driver experienced in tracking animals. Everyone was on the lookout for wildlife, and it was truly wonderful. Of course, the driver, as the most experienced, spotted the most.

Accommodation on safari can be an extraordinary experience that allows you to get close to wildlife and enjoy the charms of an African adventure. You can book lodging within the park or nearby. These accommodations offer various room types, from luxurious apartments to more standard but still comfortable options.

Is Safari in Kenya Safe?

Generally speaking, Kenya is a popular safari destination, and safaris are conducted under suitable conditions: you stay in the vehicle, avoid touching animals, etc. However, you are interacting with wild nature, so it’s important to be aware of this. Using guides who know the area and can provide safety and distance is advisable.

It’s essential to purchase additional insurance before going on safari, preferably one that can evacuate you from remote areas, such as Flying Doctors (recommended by Agnieszka, who runs her travel agency, in Kenya). It’s affordable and definitely worth it.

 It’s an extraordinary adventure where you can encounter wild animals in their natural habitat. However, it’s essential to be well-prepared, follow local regulations and customs, and exercise caution to enjoy a safe and fascinating trip to this beautiful country.

The Tsavo National Park in Kenya is a vast area covering approximately 23,000 square kilometers, divided into two national parks: Tsavo East and Tsavo West. They are separated by the A109 road and the railway line from Mombasa to Nairobi. Both places are characterized by wild nature, bushland, acacia forests, and diverse ecosystems.

Tsavo East is the largest national park in Kenya, covering a whopping 13,747 square kilometers. Today, I invite you to explore Tsavo West, the second-largest national park in Kenya. The park is known for its lava, springs, and breathtaking sunsets. As mentioned in the title, you can spot Africa’s Big Five here encompasses five species of large mammals: elephant, black rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, and leopard.

Tsavo West National Park

 Tsavo West National Park covers an area of 9,065 square kilometers. As mentioned in the introduction, it is separated from the neighboring Tsavo East Park by the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa road and the railway line. Tsavo West is somewhat less popular due to its diverse, sometimes rugged landscapes, Mzima Springs, rich biodiversity (not every park offers the Chance to see the Big Five), rhino sanctuary, famous lava flows, and guided walking opportunities. Of course, these are not the only reasons. ? Here, you will also find red soil and red roads. However, compared to Amboseli National Park, spotting animals here can be more challenging due to the dense thickets and numerous trees. Additionally, the park’s surface area is larger.

Animals in the park

The Tsavo West National Park is home to numerous species of wild animals, including black rhinoceros, hippos, buffalo, elephants, leopards, and lions. Additionally, you can encounter creatures such as zebras, Masai giraffes, dik-diks, and more in the park. One important thing to know is that the rhino sanctuary can be visited during specific hours under protection. There is no other option – rhinos are still hunted for their horns.

Birds in Tsavo West

 Tsavo West offers excellent conditions for bird watching. This national park is home to many bird species, including eagles, falcons, kestrels, vultures, hornbills, and many others. It’s a true paradise for ornithology enthusiasts. You’ll find weavers, quails, kingfishers, rollers, and various types of starlings aplenty… It’s beautiful and colorful.

Additionally, hornbills like the white-cheeked, black-winged, and yellow-billed are seen at every turn.

The Man-eaters of Tsavo

Towards the end of the 19th century, the British began building a railway line that passed through this area. The construction of this railway line became infamous for tragic events. More specifically, during the construction of a bridge across the Tsavo River, a series of killings of construction workers occurred. To be more precise, two maneless lions became nighttime predators, hunting and killing at least 28 Indian and African workers. Some sources even report much higher casualty numbers, reaching up to 135 individuals. The lions were eventually shot by the bridge construction supervisor, Lieutenant Colonel John Henry Patterson. Their skins and skulls are now displayed at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

Mzima Springs

 Mzima Springs are extraordinary springs hidden within Tsavo West National Park. They are located in the western part of the park. What makes Mzima Springs so unique is primarily their origin. The water that flows there undergoes an incredibly long journey. It’s hard to imagine how long ?. The water’s journey begins beneath the volcanic Chyulu Hills in the north. The volcanic rocks there create a practically impermeable barrier. Rainwater must therefore penetrate these rocks, spending up to 25 years underground before finally emerging as a source 50 kilometers away. This natural filtration process gives the water incredible purity. Mzima is, of course, home to many animals. Hippos and Nile crocodiles have found refuge here. You can also admire colorful fish by descending onto a special underwater platform. Moreover, Mzima Springs became famous through nature documentaries.

Shetani Lava Flow

The eruption of Shetani Lava is one of the main attractions of Tsavo West National Park. When the local population saw the flowing lava, they believed it to be the work of the devil himself. Hence the name, “Shetani” means “devil, satan.” This area of black lava covers an area of about 50 km2 and is a unique attraction not only in Tsavo West National Park but also in all of Kenya. Shetani Lava is located about 4 km west of Chyulu Gate. Interestingly, this eruption occurred only a few hundred years ago. Therefore, it’s best not to walk on the lava, as it can sometimes collapse.

Accommodation in the park

Staying overnight in Tsavo West National Park is a unique experience that allows you to combine close contact with wildlife with comfortable accommodation. Several accommodation options in the park cater to different preferences and budgets. I stayed at NGULIA SAFARI LODGE KWAHERI, but it can be challenging to find accommodation there online. However, you can book other places over the Internet, including within the national park.

Rock climbing in the national park

Another thing that attracts people to Tsavo West is rock climbing. This place is unique for climbers because you can observe elephants moving across the plains below the cliffs, as well as birds of prey soaring above the rocks, including eagles, vultures, and falcons. An additional attraction is the often visible Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. It’s worth noting that obtaining permission from the Mountain Club of Kenya (MCK) for climbing and camping in this region is a unique privilege. Climbers who wish to visit this area should first contact the Mountain Club of Kenya (MCK).

Tsavo West – Why Visit?

 Tsavo West is a place where you can see elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, leopards, and many other wild animals in their natural habitat. It’s a true paradise for nature photography enthusiasts. Additionally, the landscape is truly diverse: on one side, you have hilly landscapes, on the other, rocky cliffs and rivers, as well as vast savannas. Moreover, Tsavo West has many interesting places to visit, such as Mzima Springs or Shetani Lava, which add an extra dimension to your journey. It’s worth coming here and discovering the boundless beauty of Kenya.

During my trip to Kenya, I visited the beautiful Amboseli National Park, which impressed me not only with its stunning landscape but also with its abundant wildlife. Formerly known as the Maasai Amboseli Nature Reserve, it is now a 392-square-kilometer national park situated right on the border of Kenya and Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park, despite its low rainfall, is one of the best places in the world for wildlife observation. Here, you can spot approximately 400-600 species of birds (depending on research), as well as a variety of animal species such as elephants, zebras, and cheetahs.

Amboseli Park – What is Worth Knowing?

When visiting the park, please remember to adhere to the rules of wildlife protection. Do not leave your vehicle outside designated areas, avoid harassing animals, stick to paved roads, and always give animals the right of way. This is important not just for the sake of nature but also because Kenyan laws regarding harm to animals are extremely strict.

One more thing to note is that this park is becoming increasingly popular, so you might be surprised by the large number of tourists compared to, for example, Tsavo West.

What to Bring With You to Amboseli Park?

First and foremost, remember to bring water, sunscreen, and headgear. Additionally, bring a scarf or neck gaiter to protect yourself from dust and wind (it may or may not come in handy). Avoid wearing navy blue clothing, as it attracts flies.

The park, located just across the border from Tanzania, offers incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest mountain in Africa. Seeing it in all its glory is not always possible; we were fortunate to see it first thing in the morning, and it left an incredible impression!

Animals in Amboseli National Park

In this park, you can encounter a wide variety of animals. However, Amboseli National Park is especially renowned for its extraordinary encounters with wild elephants. It’s one of the best places in the world to get up close to these majestic creatures.

Amboseli was once home to a famous elephant named Echo, who was studied by American conservationist Dr. Cynthia Moss for nearly four decades. Sadly, Echo passed away in 2009.

What else can you see? Lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippos, striped mangabeys, antelopes, gazelles, monkeys, baboons, hyenas, warthogs, and much more. ?

Birds in Amboseli Park

In the park, there are hundreds of bird species. You will spot pelicans, flamingos, herons, kingfisher geese, cranes, ostriches, vultures, and numerous raptors. There’s plenty to see, so if, like me, you’re a bird-watching enthusiast, Amboseli will undoubtedly captivate you.

There are glossy starlings and noisy hornbills. You can spot flamingos, pelicans, and other water birds that are practically within arm’s reach.

Overnight in Amboseli Park

An overnight stay in Amboseli National Park is a unique experience that allows you to get in close contact with wildlife and admire the majestic Kilimanjaro. There are various accommodation options in and around the park to suit different preferences and budgets. In Amboseli Park you can find luxury safari lodges that offer the highest standard of accommodations.

Amboseli National Park is a magical place where you can get up close to elephants in their natural habitat, admire Mount Kilimanjaro, and simply marvel at the world around you. In the vicinity of the park, you can meet the Maasai people and visit their villages. We often encounter local works of art that adorn our surroundings, but we rarely consider the process behind creating these unique masterpieces. The Akamba manufactory is an exceptional place where you can not only discover unique figurines and real gems but also observe the creative process behind them. By visiting this manufactory, you’ll uncover the immense amount of work, patience, and passion that goes into crafting these treasures of original folk art.

If you are traveling to the Mombasa area, a visit to this place is a must. Set aside at least 2 hours to witness the carving process and explore their fantastic store at the end of your visit.

The Akamba People

The Kamba, also known as the Akamba, are an ethnic group residing in East Africa, primarily in Kenya, where they number around 4 million people. The Akamba are renowned not only for their culture but also for their unique handicrafts, highly valued both at home and abroad. They create a variety of items such as sculptures, household items, and sisal-woven baskets.

The Akamba Handcraft Industry Cooperative Society was established in 1963 by approximately 300 talented sculptors. Over the decades, they have crafted amazing animal sculptures, functional and decorative objects, masks, ornaments, and sculptures of human figures, fulfilling the dreams of customers who seek one-of-a-kind works of art.

Furthermore, you can rest assured about the quality of materials and craftsmanship, as most products come with detailed descriptions indicating the type of wood used and the craftsman responsible for creating the figurine. This is a place where each item carries its own story and soul.

What Does Figurine Making Look Like?

It can be said that the art of carving exotic wood is passed down from father to son. The artisans specialize in creating sculptures using very basic tools that may seem primitive nowadays. However, the results of their work are exceptional.

The process involves selecting the right piece of wood, pre-carving, fine detailing, surface smoothing, decorating, and final treatment or painting—all of which can be observed firsthand.

Artisans at this manufactory work with exotic woods such as ebony or mango wood to create figures of various shapes and designs. This presents a wonderful opportunity to learn about local craft techniques and acquire authentic wood souvenirs at affordable prices.

After the tour, make sure to visit the souvenir store. Here, you can find the figures you saw earlier at truly affordable prices. Personally, I purchased wooden spoons, bookrests, a large cat, and wooden magnets—beautiful items imbued with soul.

Mombasa is a city situated on the coast of Kenya. More precisely, it holds the position of being the second-largest city in the country. What makes Mombasa unique is that, apart from being a city, it also happens to be an island.

Throughout its turbulent history, which has seen it ruled by various powers including the Portuguese, Arabs, and the British, Mombasa has managed to preserve its distinct character. When you visit this city, you will have the opportunity to explore intriguing attractions found on its streets, and you may feel like an uninvited guest at times. However, it’s important to note that all the places in Mombasa are significant not solely for their beauty, but more importantly for the insights they provide into the city and the wider region.

In this article, we will highlight some compelling reasons to visit Mombasa. So, feel free to take a tour and discover the wonders it has to offer.

Is Mombasa Safe For Visitors?

I’ve received numerous inquiries about the safety of visiting Mombasa independently. Some travelers choose to do so, while others opt for guided tours with a local guide who hails from Mombasa (as we did). This choice can be quite convenient because, in Mombasa, it’s common for Kenyans to approach tourists and offer to show them around, making it challenging to decline such offers.

In terms of safety, it’s worth noting that Mombasa is generally considered safer than Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. However, like in many places, pickpocketing incidents can occur, so it’s wise to stay vigilant. Additionally, you may come across beggars in Mombasa, including children and the disabled.

Fort Jesus (UNESCO)

The two most significant attractions on Mombasa Island are Fort Jesus and the Old Town.

Fort Jesus, also known as Boma la Yesu, holds a prominent place in Mombasa’s history. This fortress was constructed in 1593 under the orders of King Philip II by the Portuguese. In 2011, it earned the distinction of being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 17th century brought significant changes to the fort’s history. During the 1590s of that century, Mombasa was occupied by the Omanis, leading to numerous transformations in the region.

Throughout the 19th century, the Arabs and the British engaged in fierce competition for control of Mombasa, with the fort becoming a pivotal battleground in the struggle for dominance. Eventually, in 1875, the British leased the fort along the coast and used it as a city prison until 1958.

Today, Fort Jesus not only stands as a historic landmark but also houses a small museum. Remarkably, you’ll find a Polish connection on the fort’s walls, including a plaque that commemorates the presence of Polish refugees, numbering around 20,000, in this part of Africa during and after World War II.

Old Town in Mombasa

While strolling through the Old Town, you’ll have the opportunity to delve into Kenya’s centuries-old history. Here, you’ll encounter buildings dating back to the colonial era, although it’s unfortunate that the Old Town’s historical documentation is somewhat limited.

This particular district of Mombasa is predominantly Muslim, and as such, it boasts several ancient mosques, with many residents adhering to traditional Muslim attire.

Notable landmarks within this area include the Africa Hotel, one of the first hotels to grace Mombasa. It’s intriguing to imagine that from its balconies, there once stretched a breathtaking view of the sea. Another historical gem is the Old Post Office, established in 1899 to facilitate money transfers for the Indian laborers who were instrumental in constructing the railway.

As you explore the Old City, keep an eye out for intricately carved doors, many of which are over a century old. These carvings distinctly bear the influences of Arab and Indian cultures. Additionally, take note of the ornate wooden balconies that adorn the buildings.

An essential piece of information to remember when visiting Mombasa is that Kenya only gained its independence from Britain on December 12, 1963.

New Town in Mombasa

The distinction between the Old City and the New City often comes down to more than just color. The older buildings, painted in a charming shade of yellow, stand in contrast to the newer structures, which are adorned with a vibrant blue hue. Naturally, these areas also vary significantly in terms of their historical backgrounds and construction dates. However, it’s worth noting that there’s considerably less information available about the New Town.

In essence, while the color contrast may be immediately noticeable, delving deeper reveals a stark contrast in the history, character, and stories of these two facets of Mombasa.

Old Port of Mombasa

The history of Mombasa as a city can be traced back to medieval times when it served as a crucial trading port on the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. Furthermore, Mombasa stands as one of the primary hubs of the Swahili civilization, which thrived along this coastline from the 13th to the 15th centuries.

At Likoni Port, which is located on the island of Mombasa, there is a park adorned with centuries-old baobab trees. It’s certainly worth taking a trip there, as during the day, you’ll encounter locals and quite a few children who visit the park for a respite.

Temples in Mombasa

Kenya is predominantly a Catholic country. However, Mombasa stands out as primarily a Muslim community. In this city, you’ll come across numerous mosques, with the Mandhry Mosque being one of the oldest. It was established in 1570, and the present building likely dates back to 1830. Located right next to the Elephant Tusks is Uhuru Garden. This garden is renowned for its population of bats that inhabit the trees. One particular species, known as the fawn phantom, boasts several thousand individuals within this garden. Bats fulfill crucial roles in ecosystems; however, for some individuals, they also evoke concerns due to their nocturnal behavior and their association with eerie tales. Some people even believe that a jinni, a spirit from Arab mythology with extraordinary powers, resides in the land alongside these bats.

Exploring a Local Market

A visit to Mombasa would be incomplete without exploring the local bazaar, a place filled with enticing aromas and vibrant colors. Here, you’ll find an array of spices, aromatic coffee, and tantalizing tea. In my opinion, it’s definitely worth a visit, but haggling is a must. As a tourist, especially one who is not a local, initial prices may be on the higher side. Whether you succeed in negotiating a better deal depends not only on the seller but also on your bargaining skills.

If bargaining isn’t your preference, you can always opt for the typical stores and markets where all products are priced consistently for everyone. Many people recommend visiting Carefour for this purpose, but I recommend visiting Naivas, which is located nearby and probably has a wider range and better prices.

Akamba Tribe Artisan Workshop

The Akamba tribe’s artisan workshop is a place where skilled craftsmen have been intricately carving exotic woods for generations. It’s a haven for discovering unique figurines and true works of art, but, above all, it offers a chance to witness the captivating process of creating these one-of-a-kind sculptures.

Artisans here expertly craft pieces from exotic woods like ebony and mango, producing exquisite figurines and diverse objects with various shapes and designs. This presents an excellent opportunity to gain insights into local artisan techniques and to acquire authentic souvenirs crafted from exotic wood at reasonable prices.

Confidence in the quality of materials and the craftsmanship is evident throughout, with most products featuring descriptions detailing the type of wood used and the craftsman responsible for creating the piece.

If you’re in the mood for burgers or pizza and looking for a restaurant recommendation, I suggest trying Java House. Their offerings are quite satisfying, and they also serve delicious mango juice. However, it’s worth noting that the waiting times can sometimes be on the leisurely side, but the experience is well worth it. ?

Mombasa – Why It’s Worth Visiting

Mombasa may not fit the mold of a meticulously pristine tourist destination, and it’s essential for prospective visitors to be aware of this fact. However, this is by no means a reason to dismiss Mombasa as an unworthy destination. It’s crucial to understand this to avoid any disappointment, especially if you anticipate the Old Town to resemble cities like London. ? Some of the structures in the Old Town are in dire need of renovation, as our guide aptly put it, “Today this building stands, but tomorrow, it may not.” Of course, this doesn’t apply to all buildings, but some might give that impression. Additionally, certain streets may not be particularly inviting for walking, with scattered garbage in some areas that emit unpleasant odors. Furthermore, the traffic in Mombasa can be quite chaotic, making even a bustling city like Bangkok seem comparatively peaceful.

However, what makes Mombasa truly worth visiting goes beyond its historical significance. In my opinion, it’s the experience itself that holds value. The stark contrast between the opulent hotels and the everyday lives of the less affluent residents you encounter on the streets can be eye-opening. It encourages reflection and provides food for thought, ultimately enriching your perspective on the world.
