Villefranche-sur-Mer: an Insider’s Guide

If you’re planning to visit or are already on the French Riviera, make sure to note down this place: Villefranche-sur-Mer. This charming town is sure to captivate every visitor. Situated right by the Mediterranean Sea, it’s incredibly atmospheric and perfect for a leisurely stroll. Well, calling it leisurely might be a stretch, as the town ascends uphill, but that’s just another reason to visit.

What to See in Villefranche-sur-Mer?

The answer to this question is not difficult.

During your stay, it’s worth climbing the hill to admire breathtaking views: narrow streets, and orange-yellow houses in contrast to the azure water.

In Villefranche-sur-Mer, explore the historic center, which is likely one of the most colorful in France. I recommend a visit to the Old Town, where you can see the Chapel of Saint-Pierre and a charming, small garden. The chapel may seem unassuming, but it left a significant impression on me. Additionally, there’s Rue Obscure, an extraordinary, only 130-meter-long street in the heart of the Old Town. Remarkable because it is entirely covered and was established in 1260.

What else to see in Villefranche-sur-Mer? Among the attractions, the Church of Saint-Michel is notable, as well as the Citadel of St. Elmo, dating back to the 16th century. It’s one of the first examples of bastioned fortifications in Europe. For enthusiasts of such atmospheres, the defensive walls (or rather, their remnants) and Torre Vecchia Tower are interesting.

Furthermore, be sure to visit Port de la Santé and take a look at Port de la Darse, observing the fortifications. Port de la Darse is a former military port currently under university supervision, hosting various cultural events. On the other hand, Port de la Santé is a regular fishing port located at the foot of the old town.

Two museums can be explored here:

• Goetza-Boumeestera Museum

• Museum known as the Ruin Museum

Fun fact! This is where the famous Flower Sea Battle takes place. This historical and charitable event occurs at the end of February, so unfortunately, we didn’t get to see it.

Accommodation in Villefranche-sur-Mer

In Villefranche-sur-Mer, you can find several accommodation options, such as hotels and apartments. However, if you’re looking for more choices, it’s worth considering staying in Nice. There, you’ll find more hotels, hostels, private accommodations, and other lodging options that cater to various budgets and needs.

What Else to Do in Villefranche-sur-Mer?

I recommend buying ice cream at Le Glacier 16 – truly delicious, and they serve generous portions. Also, take a stroll along the Promenade des Professeurs. Villefranche-sur-Mer has fewer tourists than Nice or Antibes, adding even more charm to this place.

All of this, bathed in sunlight and the friendly Mediterranean atmosphere.
