Lower Silesia is a region distinguished by a significant number of castles and palaces. There are over twenty of them, and each is definitely worth a visit! Today I will present to you those among them where hotels operate. Staying in such a place will provide everyone with unforgettable experiences! They are particularly suitable for a romantic getaway combined with sightseeing, but they will also be great for a family trip.

Kliczków Castle

Kliczków Castle draws its style from French castles. Once there was a fortress here, which was meant to defend the Duchy of Świdnica-Jawor. Over the centuries, the building changed owners frequently. The modernization that gave it its current shape took place in the 19th century. At that time, the castle was also surrounded by an English-style garden.

Kliczków Castle is one of the largest structures of its kind in Lower Silesia. It looks truly impressive! It consists of residential wings in the neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance styles.

Kliczków Castle houses a hotel, a spa center, and an elegant restaurant. Accommodations are available in double rooms (starting from 399 PLN) and apartments. The most luxurious Imperial Suite has an area of over 50m² and consists of a bedroom (with a canopy bed) and a spacious living room. It is distinguished by original 19th-century furnishings and room layout. You can feel like royalty here!

This is a good option for a trip with children, as besides the pool, you will also find a playroom and a ping-pong table, as well as a horse stable in the nearby manor.

Wojanów Palace

Wojanów Palace is the main part of a large estate. It was built between 1603 and 1607 at the behest of Nickel von Zedlitz. Originally characterized by Renaissance style, the palace was rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century, and in the 19th century – in the Neoclassical style with elements of Neo-Gothic.

Within the palace complex, you will find a garden, a brick barn, a stable, and a residential outbuilding. The palace has three floors in the shape of a rectangle with towers at each corner. Like other similar estates, Wojanów Palace changed hands over the years. After World War II, it housed a state-owned farm, the activities of which damaged the building.

Currently, the restored Wojanów Palace offers accommodations. There are rooms available – from single to quadruple occupancy – as well as a Premium SPA room and apartments. The rooms are located both in the Barn and in the Palace itself. Prices start from 369 PLN. Guests also have access to a pool with a sauna.

Karpniki Castle

Karpniki Castle was built in the 14th century. Its current appearance dates back to 1846 and is the work of the architect Friedrich August Stüler. Despite modifications, remnants from the Middle Ages can still be found in the castle: part of the tower and fragments of the north and east wings.

After its turbulent history, which led to destruction, Karpniki Castle was purchased and renovated by private owners. Currently, modernity blends with well-preserved historical spirit in the castle.

You can stay in a Standard castle room for a price starting from 650 PLN per night. However, it’s worth paying attention to the Royal Apartment. It consists of two historical rooms that were the most important rooms of the castle in the times of the Hohenzollern royal family. Its special features include stained glass windows, ceilings adorned with golden stars, 19th-century paneling, and stylish furniture.

Lomnica Palace

Lomnica Palace was built in the 17th century. The main part and two corner residential chambers date back to that time. In the 1720s, modifications were made to the palace’s facade and interiors. However, the most significant changes in the appearance of Lomnica Palace were made between 1838 and 1844.

After World War II, it served as an agricultural school, and later as a primary school. In the 1970s, the complex was abandoned, and during the communist era, it was turned into a state-owned farm, contributing to the ruin of the main palace. It was only in 1992 that descendants of the von Küster family – former owners – in cooperation with partners from Poland regained the estate and restored the palace to its former glory.

Available rooms are divided into two categories: Palace rooms and Arkadia rooms. As you might guess, the former are located in the Palace, and their interiors faithfully reflect the historical character of the place. Rooms from the second category are located in the Manager’s House and are decorated in a cozy, idyllic style. You can also rent the Gardener’s Studio in the Gardener’s Cottage, which can accommodate up to six people.

Lubiechowa Palace

Lubiechowa Palace was built on the site where the hunting castle of the Duke of Jawor, Henry I, once stood. The Duke sold it to private hands along with the village. Later, the estate was bought by Kaspar Otto v. Zedlitz, the grandson of Kaspar von Zedlitz from Podgórki, and it was most likely then that the castle was transformed into a palace.

In the post-war years, the palace housed a holiday center. In subsequent years, it belonged to the commune and unfortunately fell into ruin. The property was bought, and in 2021 it was reopened.

The main Palace has 23 rooms and 1 suite, and in the nearby Agronomist’s House – 7 rooms and 3 suites. Prices start from 230 PLN per night. There are single and double rooms available, as well as Superior rooms with an extra bed. All are decorated in a retro style consistent with the place’s decor. Although Lubiechowa Palace may seem unassuming to you, it is beautifully restored!

Czocha Castle

Czocha Castle was built in 1247 at the behest of the Czech king Wenceslaus I. From 1319 for 70 years, it was ruled by Piast princes. In the following years, the castle returned to the Czech Republic. In 1909, the neglected castle was bought by Ernst Gütschow, who, along with the Berlin architect Bodo Ebhardt, restored its “historical” appearance from 1703.

After the war, the castle became a center for Polish Army officers, which helped it avoid the fate of other similar castles, and it survived in excellent condition until modern times.

Czocha Castle is particularly notable for its themed rooms! Because the building resembles a certain famous castle from fantasy books, you can spend the night in the magical Wizard Boy’s Room! I think many of you would also enjoy the Traveler’s Room. In addition to these, regular rooms are available, divided into Standard and Superior types. Gruszów Palace

Gruszów Palace was built around 1830. Shortly afterward, the residence was rebuilt into a representative palace in the Neo-Renaissance style. Immediately after the end of World War II, Gruszów Palace was a place for relaxation and organization of summer camps. By the decision of the provincial conservator of monuments dated November 8, 1980, both the palace and the surrounding park were entered into the register of monuments.

In Gruszów Palace, there are twelve atmospheric rooms available: 4 Standard single rooms, 4 Premium double rooms, two apartments with tiled stoves, a three-room Superior apartment, and a double room “In the Palace Cellar” with a castle-like character. Prices start from 320 PLN. Guests praise the decor and exemplary service.

The Christmas Market in Wrocław is one of the main winter attractions, drawing crowds every year. After all, nothing puts you in a joyful mood like entering a land where the magic of Christmas hangs in the air! Wooden stalls, colorful lights and decorations, the scent of gingerbread and spices – all of this brings back feelings from a time when we still believed in Santa Claus!

It is said that the Wrocław Christmas Market is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. Certainly, its size is impressive. Are you curious about what you can find there? If so, keep reading!

Christmas Market in Wroclaw– Key Information

In 2023, the market runs from November 24 and, for the first time in history, will continue until January 7, 2024! It takes place in several locations: on the Market Square (North, South, East, and West Promenades), at Plac Solny, on Oławska and Świdnicka streets.

The stalls are open from 10:00 to 22:00. It’s important to note that the market is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and on New Year’s Eve, the stalls will close at 17:00. Fortunately, on New Year’s Eve, the gastronomic stands will remain open until 2 in the morning, so you can celebrate with a cup of mulled wine in hand!

Christmas Market – Events

What are the main events organized as part of the Christmas Market? On December 17 at 17:00, there will be a spectacle titled “Snow Tale” organized by the famous artists of the Gryf Guard. It’s worth participating in regardless of age! You can listen to the story of the Snow Queen, who, along with Snow Wizards and Snowflakes, embarks on a journey to recover a stolen crystal and restore the spirit of joyful winter.

On December 22, an interactive truck, the Wawel Truck, will appear at the Market with the Christmas convoy of Radio Zet! Inside the truck, there will be a paradise for the youngest, with skill games, knowledge about the secrets of making chocolate, and a sweet zone full of treats. Outside, culinary workshops will be organized, and a karaoke zone will be designated.

Main Attractions at the Market

Be sure to visit the house called the “Ratusz” on Plac Solny! It is a three-level building, and from its terrace, you can admire the panorama of the Market. Here, you can enjoy the iconic “Krasnal’s hot chocolate” served in boot-shaped cups. The rooms in the Ratusz, with a fairytale atmosphere, are enclosed, so if it’s too cold, you can warm up inside.

If you are at the Market with children, visit the Fairy Forest! On its premises, there is a mountain railway and a carousel, which will surely bring a lot of joy. This year, inside one of the buildings, after touching an interactive glass, children will see the magical Present Factory! They will be able to see how gifts are made from start to finish, thanks to the diligent work of the elves. This little show will surely enchant them!

What Can You Buy at the Market? Christmas Souvenirs

The richness of the Christmas Market in Wrocław consists of over 180 stalls! Many of them offer handicrafts: intricately crafted Christmas decorations, hand-painted baubles, angel figurines, ceramics, including the aforementioned boot-shaped cups, and hand-iced gingerbread. So, you can easily find Christmas presents for your family! You’ll come across many gems.

In addition to that, at the Market, you can buy jewelry, cosmetics, honey, alcohol, traditional pretzels, and various preserves. Of course, there are also toys: mainly plush toys and dolls, often in a festive form: elves, reindeer, and of course, Santa Claus!

Delicious Treats – Gastronomy

The Market is the perfect place to taste some delicacies – or several, because it’s hard to stop at just one! Everything tempts with appetizing smells and enticing looks. You can find traditional snacks such as “pyra z gzikiem” (potatoes with cottage cheese), a slice of bread with lard and pickles, hot sauerkraut, or grilled meats in various forms. For sweet lovers, there are gingerbreads and crispy waffles with various toppings!

If you want to deviate from the classics, the wooden stalls also sell less-known items: original Turkish halva, Spanish churros, or Portuguese Pastel de Nata. Want to stock up on sweets for winter? You can easily buy gummy bears, often in XXL sizes, or nuts in chocolate or caramel. At the Market, you can enjoy hot chocolate, punch, mulled wine, and various winter fruit and tea-based infusions.

Located at the foot of the Karkonosze Mountains, Karpacz is one of the most beautiful mountain resorts in Poland. Its popularity as a starting point for conquering the famous Śnieżka mountain is well-deserved, given the multitude of trails of varying difficulty levels that continuously attract mountain enthusiasts.

However, picturesque Karpacz has much more to offer! It is also loved by avid winter sports enthusiasts. The town itself hides many interesting places worth visiting to bring back fond memories. Join me on a journey through the key points on the map of Karpacz!

Śnieżka Mountain

Let’s start with the already mentioned Śnieżka mountain. Known as the queen of the Karkonosze, it is a unique symbol of Karpacz. This border mountain is located on the Polish-Czech border and is simultaneously the highest peak in the Czech Republic.

Its height is 1602 meters above sea level. There are four trails leading to the summit, so everyone can find a suitable one – you can also use a lift or a cable car if you prefer. The view from the top of Śnieżka is breathtaking, especially when combined with the observation of the sunrise or sunset – a truly spectacular sight!

“Samotnia” Shelter

“Samotnia” is one of the oldest shelters in Poland. It is located in the Karkonosze National Park, specifically in the Kocioł Małego Stawu, at an altitude of 1195 meters above sea level – roughly halfway from the town to Śnieżka.

The shelter is built of wood in the style of a mountain hut. “Samotnia” gained fame thanks to Waldemar Siemaszko, who became its manager in 1966. He modernized the building while introducing a unique atmosphere that was loved by regulars and guests. He organized various events and competitions in “Samotnia.” Currently, the shelter is run by his immediate family.

“Samotnia” is surrounded by mountain vegetation and stands right above the lake. It has a lot of charm. Here, you can not only comfortably spend the night but also have a meal or enjoy a hot drink. The buffet is open from 8 am to 8 pm. “Samotnia” also houses a tourist information point.

Karkonosze National Park

 Are you nature lovers or do you love strolling through majestic landscapes? You must visit the Karkonosze National Park! Covering almost 6,000 hectares, it primarily includes the Main Ridge of the Karkonosze.

For additional protection, it is surrounded by a forest area called the buffer zone. It was created to protect the natural values and unique flora and fauna of the Karkonosze. It’s known that most people are drawn to Śnieżka within its borders, but there’s much more to admire!

The hiking trails in the Karkonosze National Park cover a total of 112 kilometers. The majority consists of forests, but you can also observe lush vegetation and impressively large, glacial rocks in various shapes. Animals in the park include mouflon, wild boars hiding in the bushes, and even rare species of colorful butterflies! A must-see is the Szklarka Waterfall, known as the park’s showcase.

Dam on Łomnica, or the Wild Waterfall

The dam on Łomnica was built in the 20th century, specifically between 1910 and 1915. It was erected as part of a flood protection program to prevent the treacherous and dangerous Łomnica River from causing more problems for the residents of Karpacz. As a result of these efforts, an eye-catching artificial waterfall and a small reservoir were created.

Combined with the surrounding greenery, the dam creates a perfect setting for peaceful walks or spending pleasant moments with loved ones in a beautiful, quiet environment. A picnic here would be a good idea, and the waterfall serves as a perfect backdrop for souvenir photos.

Wooden Wang Temple

 Wang Church, known to almost everyone, was built in the 12th century in the Norwegian town of Vang. In 1842, thanks to the charismatic and favor-seeking Countess Fryderyka von Reden, it was moved to Karpacz. Since then, it has become a permanent point of excursions. It’s worth noting that it was built without the use of nails, only with wooden carpentry joints! The atmosphere inside is absolutely unique.

From April 15 to October 31, the church is open for visits from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and from November 1 to April 14, hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Sundays and holidays at 10:00 am, you can attend an evangelical service.

Karkonosze Secrets

The underground multimedia exhibition “Karkonosze Secrets” located in the city center was awarded in the National Geographic competition “Seven New Wonders of Poland”! Just for that reason, it’s worth a visit: the exhibition combines the preservation of traditions with interactive modernity.

Immerse yourself in a fairytale atmosphere and explore 12 interesting legends about this mountainous region. Many artists contributed to the meticulously designed project. Just take the tablet serving as a multimedia guide in your hand, and you can explore! Don’t be scared of the largest, seven-meter sculpture depicting the Spirit of the Mountains!

The exhibition is open every day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Reduced tickets cost PLN 26, regular tickets – PLN 32. Children under 4 years old enter the exhibition for free. Tickets can be purchased online, which is a convenient option! Although the visiting time is not limited, it is estimated to take about an hour – keep that in mind when planning your day.

The Conquerors’ Square 

This is a place commemorating Polish mountaineers, conquerors of the highest peaks, such as: Jerzy Kukuczka, Wanda Rutkiewicz. It is located on the main street of the town, next to the town hall. On the square you can see cast in bronze reflected shoes of famous mountaineers, as well as their autographs. This place attracts tourists who want to learn about the history and tradition of Polish mountaineering.

Toy Museum

 The City Toy Museum was established in 1995 from the collections of Henryk Tomaszewski – a dancer, mime, and theater lover. It’s a great place to visit, not only with children! Here, you can completely lose yourself in the intricate world of dolls presented in miniature. The collections include toys from the 17th century to the 20th century! The exhibits are displayed in showcases designed and painted by Kazimierz Wiśniak, a famous Krakow scenographer.

The museum also organizes artistic temporary exhibitions on various topics and issues, as well as interesting workshops. An additional attraction is the Room of Railway Traditions filled with exhibits. The regular ticket costs PLN 20, and the discounted one is half the price. Children up to 6 years old can enter the museum for free.

Children’s Paradise: Fairy Tale Park

The Fairy Tale Park is a project designed to introduce children to iconic fairy tales and provide them with a place to have fun! Walking along the paths, you encounter various cottages presenting Brothers Grimm fairy tales such as Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio, or The Snow Queen. Each cottage offers the opportunity to listen to a story recorded by a narrator. In addition, the Fairy Tale Park has a huge, well-equipped playground with water games and a trampoline.

The visiting time should fit within two hours. There is a guesthouse with a bar and a toilet near the Fairy Tale Park, so you have a place to have lunch or sit and relax. If you decide to stay overnight in the guesthouse, the entrance to the park is free for the duration of your stay!

Private LEGO Museum

The LEGO Museum in Karpacz is not an ordinary exhibition! The museum has ten rooms, each covering a different pop-cultural theme, such as Star Wars or the magical world of Harry Potter. Among them are also interactive elements that give visitors a lot of joy.

Everything in the rooms is designed with true imagination. The building also houses a Video Game Museum where you can play retro games. This is a place that every geek should visit at least once in their life!

Ski jump Orlinek

The Orlinek ski jump is a popular attraction that is not only often used for ski jumping competitions, but also attracts both winter sports enthusiasts who want to see the jump live.

Non-Telephonic Booth

The mysterious Non-Telephonic Booth is located in the square next to the roundabout in Karpacz (ul. Konstytucji 3 Maja/ul. Obrońców Pokoju). It is the only artistic installation of its kind in Poland! Although there is a phone in it, you cannot make a call. However, you can pick up the receiver and… thanks to the magical properties of the Booth, connect with the Spirit of the Mountains living in the past! It reveals incredible stories firsthand about news and legends that you won’t find even on the internet.

Let me start by saying that you’ll find picturesque landscapes, from the mountain peaks and valleys in the Tatra Mountains, through the hilly Pieniny and Beskidy Mountains, to the plains and forests in the southern parts of the region. Moreover, this region has a long and fascinating history, having been the site of many important events that shaped Poland.

Krakow

Krakow is a city that everyone knows and needs no introduction. Every year, it attracts tourists from all over the world. The Old Town, which is the heart of the city, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the starting point of the tour. The centerpiece of this area is the Main Square. Here, you will also see the famous Cloth Hall. As you wander through the charming streets of Krakow’s Old Town, you can admire the picturesque townhouses, which hide a lot of history and mystery. It is worth noting that no two houses in Zalipie are the same – each cottage has its unique character and atmosphere.

Wieliczka Salt Mine

Has anyone here not yet been to the most famous salt mine? If so, mark this place on the map of Malopolska’s attractions. Get ready for an unforgettable experience that begins 380 stairs down into the depths of the earth. Accompanied by a guide who tells stories and legends related to the mine, you will be able to learn the secrets of the place. You will understand how the salt deposits were discovered, what the working conditions of the miners were like hundreds of years ago, and uncover many other interesting facts.

It takes more than two hours to travel through the Salt Mine Tourist Route, so it is difficult to describe all the sites and impressions of this unique place. As you make your way through the underground passages, you’ll encounter salt lakes, structures, and sculptures carved in the salt.

Lanckorona

If you’ve already visited Zalipie, take a tour of Lanckorona, a charming village located in Wadowice County. Lanckorona is another Malopolska town that impresses with its homely character.

While visiting Lanckorona, you will feel as if you have traveled back in time. The colorful wooden houses create an unusual atmosphere that you can easily fall in love with. Lanckorona is a place that is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories, no matter what time of year you visit.

Ojcow National Park

Ojcow National Park is the smallest national park in Poland in terms of area. However, this does not mean that it is the least interesting, as it is extremely attractive for tourists.

Located in the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland, Ojcow National Park attracts nature lovers and those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is only a dozen kilometers from Krakow! In addition, this national park impresses with its extraordinary landscapes. This is a place worth visiting during your trip to Krakow.

Nowy Sacz

Nowy Sacz is an interesting city with plenty to do. For me, the most fascinating attraction is the Sadecki Ethnographic Park. I love open-air museums, and this one is exceptionally beautiful!

The Sadecki Ethnographic Park is the largest open-air museum in Malopolska. On its grounds, you will see many wooden peasant homesteads, temples, a nobleman’s mansion, and much more. Here, you will learn about the lives of the Foothillers, Highlanders, and the Lemkos, as well as view extremely interesting ethnographic exhibitions. While visiting this place, you should also visit the Galician Town. The open-air museum organizes numerous events, presentations of old crafts, regional culinary and handicraft workshops, and open-air folklore events. It’s worth it any time of the year. ?

Wadowice

Wadowice, a picturesque town in the heart of Malopolska, is a place inextricably linked to the life of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II. Wadowice is a famous pilgrimage site, starting from the Holy Father’s Family Home. In addition to the traces associated with the Pope, Wadowice also offers other attractions, such as the Town Museum and numerous churches and monuments.

While wandering around Wadowice, don’t miss the culinary symbol of the city – the famous kremówki, which will delight any foodie.

Krynica-Zdroj

Krynica-Zdrój is a picturesque resort in Beskid Sądecki, surrounded by mountains, where health, relaxation, and nature come together harmoniously.

One of the most important reasons to visit Krynica-Zdroj is the mineral waters with healing properties. Krynica-Zdrój is also a paradise for lovers of active recreation. In winter, great ski trails await, and in summer, you can go hiking on scenic trails or cycling.

Auschwitz/Oswiecim

Oswiecim is a city known around the world mainly because of the tragic events that took place there during World War II. Near Oswiecim is the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, a symbol of the Holocaust and genocide committed on a massive scale.

Most of the people who came to this place were murdered in the gas chambers, executed, or died of starvation, disease, or as a result of inhumane experiments.

Zakopane/Tatra Mountains

It’s hard to write about Malopolska without talking about the Tatra Mountains! The Tatras are the highest mountains in Poland. Majestic peaks, crystal-clear mountain lakes, extensive cave systems, and diverse flora and fauna attract tourists from all over the world.

Zakopane, also known as the “winter capital of Poland,” may not be liked by everyone, but it is an ideal starting point for exploring the Tatra trails. The trails lead through picturesque valleys and up mountains with wonderful views of the countryside. Among the most popular trails are classics such as Morskie Oko, Dolina Pięciu Stawów, and Giewont.

Malopolska – what to see there?

Are these all the attractions of the province? Of course not. Malopolska is a treasure trove of interesting places, and this post encourages you to discover them. The Trail of the Eagles’ Nests is worth a visit, and on my next trip, I want to visit the Petrified City in Ciężkowice. Lesser Poland is also home to Tarnów, the Gorce Mountains, and the Pieniny Mountains. However, these are just three of the many incredibly interesting places in the Małopolska province.

Gorzów Wielkopolski is not the first choice for tourists. It’s more of a short stop on the way to the sea, yet it’s worth giving it a chance. During World War II, it was almost completely destroyed. First, the departing Germans blew up the bridges over the Warta River, and then the Soviet army caused further devastation. However, today Gorzów Wielkopolski is a beautiful city with a lot to offer tourists. What should you see here? Read on!

Before I delve into sightseeing, I would like to emphasize that Gorzów Wielkopolski is sometimes called the city on seven hills. This is due to its interesting terrain and its location on the moraine hills along the Warta River.

Old Market Square in Gorzów Wielkopolski

One of the main attractions and a true ornament of the market square is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built at the end of the 13th century and is the largest church in the city. While exploring the interior, you will surely notice the main altar from 1600 in the form of a triptych and large colorful stained glass windows.

Another characteristic feature on the square is the Pauckscha Fountain, named after the entrepreneur who funded it. The fountain depicts a woman carrying water and several other bronze figures.

Interestingly, on the Old Market Square, you will also find the Avenue of Stars, created to honor deceased artists and cultural activists from Gorzów Wielkopolski. You can take a stroll, have lunch or coffee, and sit in the local restaurant gardens if the weather is favorable.

Lubuskie Museum – Jan Dekert Museum

The Lubuskie Museum is an institution that cares for the cultural heritage of the voivodeship. It has several branches located in important historical buildings in the city, such as a historic granary or a villa-garden complex.

In the latter mentioned place, you can take a walk among garden alleys, visit noble interiors, see portraits of historical figures, or noble coats of arms. Noteworthy are also works of art and numismatics from various epochs. Numerous events, thematic meetings, and special occasions are often organized here.

Granary

 Another branch of the Lubuskie Museum is located in the Granary, and interestingly, in 1975, the building was filled with grain! Today, you can see exhibitions relevant to the local culture, technology, industry, and the history of the city. There is also an interesting model of the city and thematic exhibitions on topics such as railways. The building is a whopping 57 meters long!

Historic Defensive Walls

The historic defensive walls were probably built here in 1257, and a preserved fragment stands in the city to this day. You will see 130 meters of historic walls made of fieldstones supplemented with bricks. There are also 4 still impressive towers waiting for you.

Nadwarcianski Boulevard in Gorzów Wielkopolski

Nadwarcianski Boulevard is a must-visit place for both active people and those who appreciate peace and quiet. Here, you will see a picturesque view of the right bank of the Warta River.

The boulevard is located in the city center and is distinguished by the longest railway viaduct in Poland. In addition to pedestrian and cycling paths, you will also find many restaurants, a playground for children, a sundial, an aviary with exotic birds, and a square where various concerts and cultural events take place in the city.

You can also relax by the fountain and walk across the historic Staromiejski Bridge to the other bank of the Warta, admiring the view of the restored Nadwarciański Bulwar.

Zacisze Park

Established in an area of former gardens and vineyards, the park is popular with walkers. It is characterized by its forest character with a dominance of beech, maple, lime and spruce trees. Among the places of interest is Goat Mountain, and a viewing pavilion has stood on its summit since 1909. It is worth climbing the mountain just for the impressive view of the city.

Janusz, the Master of Boulevard Beach

A monument that you simply must visit in Gorzów! It looks alive, sitting on the beach in a deck chair, bare-chested, reading a newspaper. A symbol of Gorzów Wielkopolski.

Witch’s Well

According to legend, in the 16th century, Gorzów Wielkopolski was inhabited by three exceptionally beautiful sisters. A somewhat unattractive and older host fell in love with them. The sisters rejected his advances, and in revenge, he started spreading rumors that they were witches!

The beautiful sisters, deemed witches, were burned at the stake, and their mother, in despair, jumped into a well. Hence the Witch’s Well in Gorzów, which we can see as a memento of this story.

Dominanta Viewing Tower

 This building, located in the middle of a roundabout, has been controversial since its construction. The tower has even been considered one of the ugliest buildings in Poland! The building is occasionally open to visitors. Its structure resembles a spider and may indeed be more of an eyesore than a decoration for this beautiful historic city. Judge for yourselves!

Santok Stronghold Museum

Although not in Gorzów Wielkopolski itself, about a 15-minute drive away is another branch of the Lubuskie Museum – Jan Dekert – the Santok Stronghold Museum.

It’s definitely worth visiting this picturesque location. Here, you can easily see what life was like in Poland during the early Middle Ages and explore local archaeological finds. Numerous attractions, guided tours, outdoor games for the youngest, and interactive exhibitions await you.

As you can see, Gorzów Wielkopolski has a lot to offer. A beautiful Vistula boulevard, unusual attractions, and interesting museums. All of this in the beautiful surroundings of the picturesque Gorzów Landscape Park. Have you been to this city? Describe your impressions in the comments!

We moved to Warsaw in 2020. Previously, we lived in a village in southern Poland for several years, and even before that, we were in Szekesfehervar, Hungary. Even earlier, we were in Prague, Czech Republic. Although I once thought it would be nice to try living in the Polish capital, I had forgotten about it for years.

Today, I will share what might be helpful for those who are considering a move. But I will also talk about my feelings towards the city and simply about how it is to live in Warsaw.

It’s been over two years since then, and I’ve updated this post with my thoughts and experiences. After this time, I can say much more, and as it turns out, we not only moved to Warsaw but also came to like this city. In this post, I will tell you not only about the advantages of living in the capital, but also what I don’t like about it.

Living in Warsaw

What’s it like living in Warsaw? I think the move in 2020 didn’t bring as many changes as the previous year or 2022. The reason is clear – we couldn’t go to restaurants, many places were closed, and socializing was limited. Nonetheless, there was still a significant change in life, a change in perspective, which I love because it allows for gaining distance. Distance from oneself, from others, from life.

How is it living in Warsaw? It’s comfortable because you can order everything to your home. It’s interesting because there’s so much to see. It’s delicious because you can try cuisine from various corners of the world. Moreover, it’s great because there are many more professional opportunities. Many times, living in Warsaw has allowed me to meet people, establish contacts, make new acquaintances, and even friendships.

Do I like Warsaw?

I do! In general, among Polish cities, I like the “bigger” ones, like Łódź or Warsaw, for living. Of course, I love my dear Opole, but the traffic jams there are disproportionate to its size.

However, I remember when I came to Warsaw with my ex-boyfriend for a tour. At that time, the capital overwhelmed me. More than 10 years have passed since then, and I’ve been to Warsaw many times – sometimes for work, sometimes for the weekend, sometimes for visits. Gradually, I grew fond of this city.

Nevertheless, at first, I slowly got used to the city buzz because living in the countryside for several years made me feel a bit out of place. I know I wouldn’t want to live in the city center because I prefer my peaceful neighborhood.

Exploring Warsaw: A Guide to Things to Do in the Capital

There are so many things to do that it was initially the most challenging for me. What to choose – going out, to a restaurant, to the park, or to a museum?

In Warsaw, there are so many things to do, and there’s something interesting to see, watch, and eat every day. You don’t need to plan much; it’s worth going to something spontaneously. For example, I attended a book signing by Katarzyna Nosowska when she released a new book. I didn’t buy her book, but I went with a friend. It was nice, really, but there was a bit too much prosecco, and after four carafes, I asked for a dedication for Gosia. Another plus is that it’s nice to be anonymous in the city because at least no one here knows me. Or so I think ?

Living in Warsaw. Which district in Warsaw is the best?

 In reality, it depends on what we expect from our daily life. Urban atmosphere, modern buildings, a sense of “elitism,” the old Warsaw feel, or the feeling of being in a small town?

We found our first apartment in Ochota, in a regular block mostly inhabited by older ladies. There were so many older people that I pondered on aging, the end of life, and death. And even though Ochota hides much more because it’s the most populous district in Warsaw, I learned that I prefer to live elsewhere. I simply don’t like crowds and prefer less populated areas. I like parks, forests (Łazienki Królewskie – who doesn’t love them?).

Apart from the district, the neighborhood is essential because city districts are simply large. ?

Also, pay attention to transportation – for us, it was crucial to leave Warsaw quickly towards Radom. So, we ended up in Ursus, which may not sound prestigious but is peaceful (at least in our area), nice, and, importantly, we have a garden where birds fly to, and squirrels come.

What don’t I like about Warsaw?

Definitely, the weather! When in Opole, where I lived before, the sun shone for a week, in Warsaw at the same time, it was cloudy, or to be more precise: it was so dark that I wondered if it was still Poland. However, Opole, like Lower Silesia, is located in the south of the country, so probably, for people from other parts of the country, Warsaw’s weather will be similar ?

Moreover, in 2022, prices in Poland rose significantly, and unfortunately, Warsaw was not spared. In two years, the cost of living in the capital increased by about 40%, taking into account rent, food, commuting, and more. Renting in Warsaw in 2022 cost around 3,000-4,000 PLN for a two-bedroom apartment. Now it’s even more exspensive.

Is it worth living in Warsaw?

 If you’re considering it, then yes, it’s worth it! You’ll never know if you don’t try. I moved here “for a trial,” and it’s just great. After two years and months, I’m satisfied, and believe me, I’m not easily satisfied. However, the aforementioned high cost of living in Poland has become quite significant.

I’ll answer another question that many of you might be asking and sometimes it’s awkward to ask:

Am I suitable for living in Warsaw?

This question is not random because the number of my phobias (including the metro) definitely makes life more challenging. You can live without the metro; besides, Warsaw has a suburban railway, but I don’t always feel like using it. So, instead of fighting what terrifies me, I decided to let it go. I try to use the bus, tram, or taxi. So, if you’re in a similar situation, don’t worry. Moving changes us, often for the better ? When I lived in Mersin, Turkey, I had to do many things I wouldn’t have suspected myself of, such as running across a 4-lane road to catch a bus. Don’t worry ahead of time – it doesn’t bring anything good.

Wrocław is a popular tourist destination, so it’s worth knowing that during peak seasons, especially in the summer, the more popular museums can get crowded. While it might not be as extreme as in Krakow, where lines can stretch for hours, it’s still a good idea to check if you can purchase tickets online. In some cases, tickets sell out quickly. After all, who wouldn’t want to explore Wrocław’s museums completely for free?

Remember that during Museum Night in Wrocław, many museums in the city offer free admission! This means that you can visit dozens of museums for free.

Wrocław: Free Museum Admission on Monday

 I’ve checked the following museums, and unfortunately, none of them offer free admission on Mondays, except for the Contemporary Museum, specifically the self-service museum on the 2nd floor, during vernissages, debates, conferences, and half an hour before their start.

Moszna Castle (German: Schloss Moschen) is one of the most impressive and picturesque buildings in Poland. It is situated in the town of Moszna, which is located in the Opole province of Lower Silesia. This place draws not only history and architecture enthusiasts but also anyone eager to witness this remarkable palace. Moszna Castle is, in fact, more of a palace than a traditional castle. This extraordinary structure boasts 99 towers and 365 rooms and is nestled in the heart of a 100-acre park. I invite you to take a n a tour of this extraordinary place.

The Palace’s History

The history of the palace is quite intriguing. Archaeological research has unveiled traces of a medieval wooden structure on the site. The first recorded mention of Moszna Castle dates back to 1845, and it is likely that a palace existed here in the 18th century, although no concrete evidence supports this claim, aside from research.

Here are some captivating facts about Moszna Castle:

• Throughout the centuries, it changed hands and underwent numerous reconstructions and modernizations, with its primary association being the Tiele-Winckler family of industrial tycoons. The estate’s history is particularly remarkable, as Franz Winckler (Franz von Winckler), initially a humble miner, eventually acquired ownership of dozens of mines.
• The central portion of the palace is the oldest part.
• Following a fire in 1896, the palace underwent a significant reconstruction.
• In the early 20th century, fragments of an underground structure were discovered in the palace garden. H. Barthel, in 1929, attributed these fragments to a Templar castle, suggesting that they might have mysterious corridors connecting them to the castle in Chrzelice.
• Despite avoiding damage during World War II, the palace served as quarters for Soviet Army units after 1945. Unfortunately, during this period, many furnishings were either destroyed or valuable items were stolen.

Architecture of Moszna Castle

This is a complex subject. The architecture of the 19th century often embraced a fairy-tale and picturesque theme, with buildings in this style sometimes harkening back to the Middle Ages. This is the case here as well. What elements indicate a reference to the Middle Ages? Asymmetry, irregularity, and varying numbers of floors. Nonetheless, you need not delve deeply into architecture because the name itself hints at it.

Regarding style, Moszna presents a unique case. The simplest way to describe Moszna’s style is eclectic: the central and eastern parts are neo-Gothic, while the western part is neo-Renaissance. One of Moszna Castle’s most distinctive features is its towers, of which there are 99 towers and turrets!

To analyze the palace’s architecture, it’s worth commencing with its layout. It is configured in the shape of the letter “U,” although the central part appears to be the most unassuming (where, in many cases, it was typically the most representative).

It would take years to thoroughly examine the entire structure. When gazing upon the castle, we can discover numerous elements that most of us may not even be aware of their associations, unless we delve into literature. We can identify elements related to hunting, themes of labor, the legend of the nymphs, and some may even find connections to the Knights Templar.

Exploring the Interior

The interiors, according to many, do not live up to the expectations raised by the palace’s exterior and shape. There is some truth to this observation. However, it’s essential to consider the history of the place, as mentioned earlier. In 1945, the palace served as accommodations for Soviet Army units. During that time, many furnishings fell victim to destruction by soldiers, and more valuable items were stolen and taken away.

Nonetheless, you can still appreciate the beauty of the palace’s ballrooms, library, chapel, and individual rooms. Regrettably, they have not been as well preserved as those in, for instance, Kozlowka.

Park in Moszna

The castle is enveloped by beautiful gardens, creating an ideal setting for strolls and relaxation. The park, designed in the English style, spans 100 hectares and showcases, among other features, three-hundred-year-old oak trees and rhododendrons (it’s particularly worth visiting at the end of May or in June to witness the blooming azaleas and rhododendrons). The gardens are meticulously maintained and adorned with bridges and pathways.

In days gone by, the Count’s guests had the privilege of using a waterway (remnants of which still exist today). This watercourse meandered along ponds and canals, all interconnected into a single water system. From their boats, visitors could admire the park, the azaleas, and, naturally, the Castle. As is customary in English gardens, the blend of nature and architecture was a sight to behold. More precisely, the park’s picturesque charm harmonized with the castle’s architectural beauty. The park had no enclosures and seamlessly merged with the surrounding woods and fields.

What Is Worth Knowing?

There is an entrance fee to access the park area from April to October. Guided tours of the chambers are available daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the chambers closing at 6 p.m. In October, the tour concludes at 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Before your visit, it’s advisable to check the palace’s website as various events are regularly held that may affect visitor hours.

During holidays and vacations, the palace hosts themed summer camps for children and teenagers, such as Moszna Castle transforming into a School of Magic and Wizardry.

Moszna Castle: A Disney Fairytale or Kitsch Marvel

Moszna Castle is not only a stunning architectural masterpiece but also a place steeped in history. Its unique design renders it an incredibly popular tourist attraction.

The palace’s shape evokes different reactions from visitors. Some associate it with a Disney fairytale castle, while others view it as excessive kitsch. These varying opinions do not surprise me, as this structure is truly one-of-a-kind, and such places often stir controversy. It’s challenging to fully grasp the various architectural styles and elements at first glance. The sheer number of towers, turrets, and windows is astonishing, rightfully earning it the nickname “a drunken confectioner’s dream” among some.

Everyone has their own unique feelings about this place. Personally, I enjoy returning here and visit on average once a year, sometimes even multiple times in a season.

Częstochowa, while best known for Jasna Góra, is more than just the spiritual heart of Poland that attracts pilgrims annually. It’s also a city rich in history and full of surprises. The streets of Częstochowa hold countless tales, and its monuments and attractions draw in numerous visitors. I visited Częstochowa recently, and while sightseeing was a treat, the delightful company enhanced the experience. I had been to the city several times before, including a family trip to Jasna Góra. But this time, I discovered places less frequented by tourists. If you’re curious about what Częstochowa offers and the hidden gems it harbors, stay tuned for the upcoming post.

Jasna Gora

Jasna Góra stands as one of the foremost pilgrimage sites in Poland and indeed, the world. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa draws millions, from those on organized tours to individual wanderers and those undertaking walking pilgrimages. Central to these pilgrimages is the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa. Over the centuries, this depiction has been attributed with numerous miracles, earning it the title of the “miraculous image.” Devotees traditionally circumambulate the altar bearing this image, often doing so on their knees. The most renowned ritual at Jasna Góra is the “Jasna Góra Appeal,” conducted daily at 9 p.m. since 1953. Constructed in the 1520s, the original Jasna Góra Basilica was a single-nave church. However, as time passed, it expanded. Today, it features four chapels, a chancel, a central nave flanked by two side aisles, a porch, a sacristy, and burial crypts. Yet, Jasna Góra isn’t Częstochowa’s sole Christian focal point. Devotees may also be drawn to the Archcathedral Basilica of the Holy Family or the Museum of Coins and Medals dedicated to St. John Paul II, further elaborated upon below.

Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny Street

This avenue serves as the city’s main thoroughfare, brimming with shops, cafes, and restaurants. At every turn, sculptures, fountains, and monuments vie for your attention. As you stroll down this boulevard, you’ll immerse yourself in the vibrant life of the city and have opportunities to savor local delicacies. Often referred to as the city’s green oasis, it’s easy to see why: the avenue is lined with numerous trees offering pleasant shade. In fact, this “avenue” comprises three distinct boulevards, bridging old and new Częstochowa. They stretch from Staszic and 3 May parks, culminating at St. Sigismund’s Church. As you traverse these boulevards, grand villas from the turn of the century come into view, once the residences of Częstochowa’s most affluent industrialists.

As you continue your leisurely walk, take a moment to rest on the uniquely designed benches, each dedicated to notable figures. Among these, you’ll find benches honoring Władysław Biegański, Halina Poświatowska, Marek Perepeczko, and Piotr Machalica.

Town Hall with a clock tower

A stone’s throw from the Old Market Square, right in the heart of the city, stands the historic City Hall, easily recognizable by its distinctive clock tower. Situated on Władysław Biegański Square, this classicist-style edifice was erected between 1828 and 1836, based on a design by Franciszek Reinstein. It underwent renovations in 1908 and was subsequently listed on the register of monuments in 1960.

Today, the City Hall is home to the Częstochowa Museum, a treasure trove of information on the city’s and the region’s history. Within its walls, visitors can explore exhibits that shed light on the culture, art, and traditions of Częstochowa and its neighboring areas. Notable are the regional paintings, featuring works by luminaries like Malczewski and Weiss, and a comprehensive collection of Polish graphic art.

Archcathedral Basilica of the Holy Family

Situated in the heart of the city, the Holy Family Basilica stands as a testament to stunning religious architecture. This neo-Gothic, three-nave structure captivates not just with its exterior, but also with its ornate interior. Within, one can admire the exquisite stained glass windows, intricate chancel, elegant stalls, and the grand organ installed in 1949.

Remarkably, the Holy Family Basilica ranks among the largest of its kind in both Poland and Europe. Its unique red brick façade contrasted with bright detailing and the melodic choir accompanied by the aforementioned organ are bound to leave an indelible impression on any visitor. The edifice is genuinely a marvel to behold.

IV High School

A gem often overlooked in most Częstochowa guidebooks, the IV High School of Częstochowa undoubtedly deserves mention. Nestled close to Jasna Góra, it’s not just the city’s oldest educational institution but also one of undeniable prestige. While its venerable walls have witnessed myriad tales, one of its most illustrious alumni is Muniek Staszczyk, the legendary Polish singer. But the “Fourth High School of General Education” is renowned for more than just its academic legacy. It’s also the birthplace of the famous band T.Love, which, intriguingly, made its debut at the school’s prom on February 4, 1982!

Czestochowa’s Old Town and Old City Hall

The historic heart of Częstochowa teems with age-old monuments and captivating nooks. A stroll through the Old Town offers views of the Avenue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Daśyński Square, and the majestic Archcathedral of the Holy Family, which I’ve highlighted before.

A centerpiece of the area is the Old Market Square, beneath which lies the ancient City Hall. Quite intriguingly, the walls of this historic hall were discovered purely by chance. In 2006, a delivery truck damaged the pavement, revealing old basement walls. Investigations unveiled that a town hall had once stood there until the early 18th century, never to be rebuilt.

Today, this site hosts the Częstochowa Museum and thought-provoking art installations. Within, visitors are treated to an archaeological display showcasing artifacts found during excavations, a meticulous recreation of the town hall’s cellars, jail, and tavern, and an immersive “History of Częstochowa” exhibit.

Murals in Czestochowa

While Częstochowa is best known for Jasna Góra, it also embraces a more modern aesthetic through its captivating murals that beautifully juxtapose the city’s traditional landmarks.

Of particular prominence is the mural near the train station. Adjacent to the station is a historic tenement house from the late 19th century. This edifice serves as the canvas for the “Guardian of Time” mural, which astonishingly spans a full 100 meters in length and rises 12 meters high. This mesmerizing artwork catches the eye of every passerby, be they a local or a visitor. “Guardian of Time” isn’t just a colossal testament to Częstochowa’s street art but also rivals many renowned European murals in sheer scale. The inspiration behind this mammoth masterpiece is Stefan Rybicki, a celebrated watchmaker in Częstochowa who owns the building. The mural’s pièce de résistance is a depiction of Rybicki himself, standing sentinel over time – a poignant reminder that time is indeed our most invaluable asset. ?

Parks in Częstochowa

Located in the city’s western region, Lisiniec Park sprawls over a vast 40 hectares of lush greenery. Its serene ambiance is accentuated by three distinctively named lakes: Adriatic, Baltic, and Pacific. A popular spot for relaxation, picnicking, and leisurely strolls amid verdant trees and tranquil ponds, it’s no surprise that the park draws both tourists and locals, especially on balmy summer days.

A host of recreational facilities awaits visitors: a 2.5 km long path, tennis courts, and water equipment rentals including kayaks, bicycles, and SUP boards. For the adventurous, there’s a skate park and a rope course. Adding to its charm are a scenic pier and children’s playgrounds.

Not too far away, Stanisław Staszic Park beckons as another urban oasis. Spanning over 5 hectares, it boasts a vast pond, sparkling fountains, a gazebo, and numerous statues. Of historical note, several buildings constructed for the 1909 Exhibition of Industry and Agriculture remain preserved within its precincts.

Museum of Match Production

Unfortunately, due to my train’s delay, I missed the opportunity to visit the Museum of Matches, a decision I deeply regret. This unique institution chronicles the history of match production in Częstochowa, tracing the evolution of the industry over time.

Established in 2002, the museum sits on the grounds of a match factory that began operations in 1881 — the first of its kind in Poland. Remarkably, the production line here continued until 2010. Visitors to the museum can witness firsthand the intricate process of match-making, an enlightening experience for both adults and children alike.

John Paul II Museum of Coins and Medals 

The museum was founded in 2011. Among its collections you will mainly find coins and medals with the image of Pope John Paul II. It is a unique place because it includes the largest collection of its kind in the world!

An interesting addition to the museum’s collection are postage stamps with the image of Pope John Paul II, as well as replicas of the Pope’s liturgical items and clothing, such as his stole, cape, piraeus and pastoral. In total, you will find about 11,000 exhibits here.

The museum is located about 5 km from Jasna Gora, and it is worth mentioning that it is only open until 3:00 pm, with entries every hour.

Museum of Iron Ore Mining

Highlighting the region’s iron industry history, this museum intriguingly houses its exhibits within former pits excavated between 1974 and 1976. The displays delve into the evolution of the industry and the technologies employed throughout its progression. Notably, the museum is a key stop on the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Voivodeship.

Visitors can marvel at authentic mining equipment, including wagons, lamps, signal boards, hand tools, and myriad other devices once essential to a miner’s daily tasks.

Abandoned Sacred Miniatures Park

Częstochowa’s Park of Sacred Miniatures was envisioned as a global attraction for both the devout and global tourists. It boasted meticulously crafted miniatures of renowned religious structures, making it a magnet for history enthusiasts, architecture aficionados, and primarily, the religiously inclined. Its crowning glory was the towering statue of Pope John Paul II, the world’s largest representation of the celebrated Pole.

Anticipation ran high that this monument would lure countless visitors. Yet, despite its initial allure, the park’s appeal waned. What was once a hub of activity and interest was eventually shuttered. Whether due to insufficient promotion or shifts in tourism trends, the park’s grandeur faded. As Gosia, a local who recalls its prime, lamented, the park’s condition deteriorates yearly. Now, it mainly beckons those intrigued by forsaken spaces. Today this place is visited mainly by fans of abandoned places.

Częstochowa, a pivotal pilgrimage hub in Poland, boasts accommodations for every traveler’s needs and budget. Given the city’s religious significance, numerous monasteries and pilgrim houses provide modest yet cozy lodgings for both pilgrims and tourists. Częstochowa never ceases to amaze. From the profound spirituality of Jasna Góra and the historical allure of the Old Town, to verdant parks and contemporary attractions, there’s something for everyone.
